Dennis Franz is, without doubt, one of the best actors in television history. Homely, out of shape - he's an everyday anti-hero. Such great performances, and unlike many "stars" he's a great guy in real life.
As I watch this I know that Andy is hurting with grief yet still stays in control.lost my nephew in 2018 then his mother in 2020 still overwhelmed with grief.sister survived heart surgery then died from covid.rough world out there.pray for our world .
best thing about that scene is that they did not show what was written in the card. makes it so real because it triggers memories of real situations to everyone who loses as love one there are just certain times like that where you take bit of comfort knowing how lucky you are to have friends in your life who truly care.
NYPD Blue Set the Bar when showing the Good, Bad, Happy and Sad of the characters, situations and Life in Uniform. Yes, it is just a TV Show. But to me it has always been a part of My Family. I appreciate this Channel and The Fans who leave a part of them in the comments to be shared. Stay Strong Everyone.....Cheers From Ohio
Before the Sopranos and Breaking Bad. This show right here set the Gold Standard for must see TV. My god, even after 25 + yrs, this show will still bring out the emotions in you. I dont care who you are.
I watched this series end to end 2 or 3 times, the last time being probably 10 or 12 years ago. I've started watching these clips on YT recently, and it's truly remarkable how well this show aged.
Donna and John weren't just PAs. They saw the squad as family and the squad did the same. This scene between Donna and Andy showed just that. I think Andy and Johns relationship was deeper though. After all the losses Andy suffered with John as their PA Andy found a friend, a barber, a baby sister and ultimately an official to preside over Andy and Connies wedding. Andy returned all that in one act. When Johns father was hospitalized with cancer and John didn't know if he should go see him Andy told he should and that if Andy had a son like John he'd sure want to see him.
Excellent points, all of them. John also took a bullet trying to stop Dolores' father and Andy called John a "hero". I think maybe John said it best during the wedding, when he said who would have thought that them two (John and Andy), would not only be friends, but family.
@Jeremy Hahn Wtf are you talking about? John babysat Theo several times for Andy. And you really need to learn something about sexual orientation before you make moro comments.
Before this series Steven Bochco created The Hill Street Blues which for me was pure quality. Bochco honed his craft over the years and we can see that NYPDB was the logical outcome.
One thing I will stand by with blue. When the show had " real " dramatic scenes it was one of the few shows that came the closest to fiction and real life . I attribute that to the writing first but the acting is just breathtaking. One of the greatest arcs on this show. Franz...damn what a actor. Wish Donna stayed a little longer.
Vince was touching because he knew Andy well. Another example of Franz as Sipowicz acting the heck out of a scene. He looks like the watermelon with rubber bands around it. You just know he's going to explode sometime. Amazing how caught up in their grief the viewers become.
I always think bobby’s death is the saddest scene ~ I love him so much. but this tender exchange at the end, donna & andy is really 💔💔 I imagine she wrote that while she was leaving for new opportunities, and would miss the whole precinct family, the person she would miss the most in nyc was andy. and that if she could change her life choice to have andy jr. be alive, she would in a heartbeat. the writers decision to keep her message private & and just have their reactions, made this emotionally very powerful.
Everytime I watch this scene I lose it. Great acting, as usual, from Franz. O'Grady was a great actress too, and played this scene perfectly! NYPD Blue had some of the best actors of any show. God I miss it!!
Andy seems really moved by Donna's note. Then he wishes her luck. What did the note say? What does she need luck with? Did she lose a child in her past? Was she hoping for one someday? Interesting how good acting can raise so many questions just with a few small expressions.
If you can emphasize with these characters your humanity is guaranteed.I spent the entire series asking myself how I would feel/react in the same circumstances.Andy is defined by his essential selflessness in the face of horrific events.
I am really, really sorry for your loss. Even as a father, I can't begin to imagine your pain. Hopefully it has eased up a little with the passage of time.
@@sergiosaunier He was 16 and a student pilot. He did the flyover for his HS Homecoming Game. Came home and passed in his sleep from sudden cardiac arrest.
@@jetsdad100 Oh man. The most wonderful moment followed by the most tragic one. I have a 17-year-old son so I can completely relate, imagining what it’d be like losing him. No father should have to endure this.
Always thought it was kind of too bad Donna was leaving at the same time as this Andy Jr storyline, but after all in real life sometimes a lot of things happen at once. And it somehow makes it worse for Andy. He hates change anyway. Donna leaving wouldn't have been as hard for him if it wasn't at the same time. Plus, right after seeing her emotions and sympathy for him.
Despite all of his problems, Vince was a good union rep.
Yes
He certainly found the right words here ..not an easy part of the job.

Donna knew Andy was a good guy, gruff, a bit of an asshole, but a good guy.
Andy conveys the pain and grief and the effort to hold himself together so masterfully here.
After losing a brother in the last year I relate to this much more now.
sorry for your loss.@@joemckim1183
donna cried - vince cried - andy almost cried - i cried. the end.
I cried, too.
Back when it was first released...and then again when I watched it today.
Really heartbreaking.
Franz is SUCH a good actor.
Same here. Then and just now.
NYPD Blue covered the full spectrum of emotion, and every scene was done to perfection.
Literally almost every scene, almost every line, throughout the 12-year run of the show was perfection. It truly was an incredible show.
Acting can be described in one word: perfection!

With all of it, Simone's death still hits me hardest.
Hill Street Blues set the standard before all of those shows....
No it didn’t…
@@UBZUKki It wasn't as good as NYPD Blue. Nothing was. The Sopranos was only about bad, evil people.

John harbored many guilts over Sylvia's death. Andy assured him nothing ever was his fault.

That scene at the end with Andy despite his grief wishing Donna luck. 😢 He always got along with the long-running PAA's eventually.
Yeah, he didn't really care much for Gerri though. 😂
@@casey3cGerri was a nut job.

I lost my 16 yr son tragically, I was first on scene as a paramedic on duty. This story line and Andy's character was spot on.
Remind me not to watch this while I'm cutting onions. Great scene!
Oh, I just asked who was cuttin' the onions -- and YOU are the guilty one!
@@incub8 LOL!!! Guilty as charged!!
I loved this series in particular Andy and the way he evolved as a person

He is Andy Sipowicz, Detective 15th precinct. He won't cry, so I cry for him.
Some people wear their scars on the inside. Andy went through enough pain for several lifetimes
Must see tv every week it was on. The acting and writing was the best. This show really pushed the boundaries of network tv.

Donna decided to leave the job. She had Fancy hand out notes to the others.
Donna was talking a new job with Apple Computer in California. This was also her last day in the squad.
Best show ever
that show was so brilliant.
Powerful scene.
This series had to be the most realistic TV drama of all time, I miss it greatly 😞

just wished we could of had some more great shows from David Milch.
Simply heartbreaking.

Great Acting ‘
John and Gina were worthy successors, but I don't think anyone ever really filled Donna's shoes.

::Steve::. No Donna Abandondo?
This show has aged well.
Donna should have stayed and straightened things out with Medavoy and married him.
A great Scene might have been Fancy Taking or Going With Andy To ID Andy Jr
Andy wouldn't have allowed that.
