- Since man can remember, immense swarms of locusts have regularly descended upon the prairies and fields of Western Africa, leaving in their wake desolate landscapes and destitute populations. Considered to be the eighth plague of Egypt, locust swarms have been known and feared since antiquity. Yet what do we actually know about locusts? What conditions make an apparently inoffensive insect metamorphose into a fearsome superpredator? Do they have some kind of collective intelligence that enables them to swarm? In the film Locust Invasion we follow the French entomologist Antoine Foucard during his last mission to Niger and Mauritania and discover the complexity of this insect and it’s multiple life phases, which until now have been widely unknown.

The locust swarms hang like shimmering dark clouds on the horizon in some places. Roughly the length of a finger, the insects fly together by the millions and are devouring crops and forcing people in some areas to bodily wade through them. Near the Kenyan town of Isiolo on Thursday, one young camel herder swung a stick at them, with little effect. Others tried to shout them away.
I researched the possiblilty of Eating the locoust instead of starving or depending on the UN.
Locusts are a type of insect from the family Acrididae and also are known as grasshoppers. Locusts swarm in huge numbers and can travel great distances, causing considerable damage to crops. However, in many African, Middle Eastern and Asian countries, locusts are considered a delicacy and eaten in abundance. Locusts are an excellent source of protein and contain a variety of fatty acids and minerals. Although not considered palatable by most Americans, locusts are an important food source in many other countries.

Humans don't have the digestive system to digest the exoskeleton & I wouldn't say they are "rich in protein". There's barely any flesh on one individual. Besides these pests carry Pathogens & Parasites that kill people. Bugs aren't part of the human natural diet.
There's a reason most humans feel repulsive by just looking at them. Children even cry when they see them. It's against our instincts to eat it for a good reason & many ethnic groups around the world know that, it's Not just "Americans" or "Whites". Starvation causes despair. People would consume anything on such occasions, even cannibalism. It doesn't mean it should be normalized.
Besides these bugs don't stop moving, the swarm will move as soon as they finish with an area. They leave you with nothing for a long while & can only satiate a person for a few meals, if they don't kill you by disease. Don't think you were the first one that thought about it.

One of the best documentaries i have ever seen. Well shot, edited and the music is perfect to the video. Can be sold to Netflix or Amazon. It is excellent. When i started watching it, I thought I may not watch it more than 10 min, because I thought they are just insects, what is there to know about. But I watched the whole video. Great Narration. locusta migratoria are the brown species that are less commenly sold in the uk now for other pets to eat like lizards etc,but the locusts on this program are the schistocerca gregaria, that are the desert locusts and these are the ones sold all the time in pet stores for reptile food. ive been told these are sold more than the other species because they are more easy to breed quickly. I have kept both species in the past.

One guy drive hours to find a grasshopper.
Meanwhile the camera man gets a closeup of one brushing his antenna to look good for a female while capturing the perfect sound of the antenna being brushed.

They set up that one grasshopper to get ambushed by that spider. The spider hunts at night, yet they woke him up and told him where Jiminy was at. Unsportsmanlike conduct on the part of the film maker.

Locust problem is easy to solve. Catch them, fried them and eat, ir simply give them to chicken as food full of protein, and dried insect can last longer as chicken food. Chinese have a more simple way, they let ducks to eat the locusts. Simple and usefull

Locusts are one of Mother Earth's ways of fighting back against the human plague.
Insects are the most beautiful, perfect, powerful, adaptable and dangerous creatures in the natural world.
Or maybe we are the top predator that controls the lower rung creatures from overpopulation and wrecking the environment? Eg like wolves controlling deer population or sharks controlling fish population.
Disagree. They seem to hit already poor and rural areas. They don't destroy big cities. We need to fight back because they make living in already food insecure parts of the world even more difficult.
Humans are eating and killing all life on earth. Poisoning, polluting and destroying all the lands, waters and skies of Nature.
As a result, Mother Nature is pissed off and is using The Locust as a warning as well as a form of punishment in order to remind us that we are not above the earth and her creatures.

USA would buy all the Locusts you can save. We use this for bass fishing. Get small points to fill the locust in and get a sells market to buy from you. Great bait for fishing.

in pampanga and in some parts of mindanao in the philippines locust is a considered a delicacy..adobong locust is best eaten with rice and spicy fried locust is good pulutan with beer.. 👍😜
If you stored your food and protected the crops properly, and agricult more naturally , the life of the creatures that eat that swarm and much more will increase

It's just a catch up game now. The growth outweighs the capacity to provide, then technology catches up. Then knowledge is found, and technology is forced to realign. We're in this phase now, catching up to knowledge. It'll happen, just keep calm.

They look so much like our common grasshopper, what's the difference? Or the main differences? I don't think our locust here in looks as much like grasshoppers as they do. Although these have a touch of a mantis look early on.
our locust here where? from a shallow google search they are the same line of speciation a grasshopper becomes a locust when they go into plague mode, and in another source it says that locusts is in fact a different line of speciation that are more likely to go into plague mode then grasshopper spieces

Locust is source of protein and will be future food. Instead of fearing and killing them, it is not surprising that they will be harvested in near future.
I would think that they would go night hunting while they are molting from their bodies, since they are in the bushes. Net the whole bush and cut it from the bottom. Tie it up and sell them or give to villagers for food. You won’t get them all but a good amount, that can be dried and eaten later.

For your information Niger is one of the top exporter of protein in west Africa cows ,goats ,sheep poultry. And fried locust is also on the local menu as delicacies for generations in the region along with shea tree caterpillar and flying termites . That's one of the source of inspiration for promoters of insects based protein trend.dried and fried locust is sold in 50 kilos bags in african markets for few dollars . If you ever witness a locust swarm you will understand the labor involved in catching or netting them. Its hard work even for hugely motivated ducks and 🐔 armies let alone carb deficient people.
