The best version of this song, ever. Bar none. He has an amazing, beautiful, strong voice. I could listen to this forever. He made this song into a hymn about love. Amazing.
Words can't describe how perfect he is in that momentous four minutes. I love Rufus so much, his voice, and everything about him! Great video, keep them up! -Luckystars413
This song is up there with AMAZING GRACE as far as I'm concerned. Something lifts it right off the ground. I cried when my son played this for me. I was stunned by its beauty. Think Billie Jean Gillmore's BABE, YOU'RE JUST A WAVE, or whatever the correct title is. Wow.
In my opinin this is one of the only Hallelujah covers that do Cohen justice. Though I quite enjoyed Imogen Heap's version as well. Mr Wainright is just fabulous and an amazing musician, singer and performer. Thanks for sharing this with us.
man how can anyone argue with this, its superb, better than Jeff's live any day of the week, this is the first time ive heard his version and it has blown me away.
I was in LA and was lucky to get last minute tickets to see Rufus and KD Lang perform at the Rose Bowl. It was one of the high lights of my life. I have been trying to find out who Rufus is ever since as I missed his name at the show. He is a delight to listen to and I love how he hits all his notes dead on with so nuch feeling too. I was out there to be on Pet Star doing my "Ice fishing" trick with my pet rats. I am also Canadian. I named my new puppy rufus too. :-D
take note dear friends: buffalo new york is THE MOST UNDERRATED CITY in these United States of America. Snow doesn't fall all the time, and when it does, no one handles it like the city of Good Neighbors. Outside they play: so many wonderful things including these concerts. Check it out, and its only 35 mins to Niagara Falls, an hour and a bit to TORONTO, ON. I lived there a couple of glorious years, a couple of years ago. Thanks video poster for taking me back.
This is such a powerful song. I Love to sing in the shower, I do not have a fabulous voice, but I pour out my heart in song. Singing is more than having a perfect voice. It's about feeling the Music. Look at Dylan, Waits, and all those great performers. Rufus is Fabulous...
buckley is amazing, thats been established, but this is one of the best songs ever written in contemporary music and anyone who can sing it like this is well worth listening to
this is a gorgeous song. I like Rufus because he sounds like he does for the most part on the CD I have of him. There are few artists who can do that... or at least as close as this. I love this song. :)
He's got such a cheeky smile! And what a talented man, he's amazing. I like Jeff's version but I like this just as much, more perhaps because I love Rufus
este tio es un monstruo!! sus versiones son alucinantes, me encantaría que cantará todas las canciones que me gustan porque él las haría incluso más grandes!!! bravo Rufus, simply the best!!!!
I saw him singing this song two weeks ago... Oh my god!!! It was amazing!!!he was so close of me.. And I have a picture with hiiiim!!! GOD I'm the luckiest person in the wooorld!!!
I agree with dancelf in saying that if anyone was to cover Leonard Cohen, it should be the Wainwrights who have been family friends with the poet for a long while and - I think - have an amazing capacity to do justice to this song. Rufus is the only person that I can accept Cohen covers from. By far my favourite version.
I actually, from many viewings over the years, interpret that 'look' as "Thank God someone is recording this!!" By the way...oh why bother. Just thanks for a great job and for taking me somehwere I wouldn't have gone without you!
I love Rufus' version. My favorite performance of it is the fillmore one. It's awesome... And in this video, at one moment, he looks straight at the camera :D thats cool ^^
@ teresa youre right there teresa, you like whatcha like,i love this version and whats more this chap has a massive worldwide following, he dad was brilliant and funny too.
aww, the way he looks into the camera / at her a few times... I love it when he does that... I happen to ador Jeff Buckley's version too, but can't see how that has anything to do with this? Rufus is simply divine...!
If it were not for him not being able to accept greatness as we can see it but rather steal form a master and try to put his sign on something he could not possibly create. Greatness Mr. Wainwright is also to honor these who were here before you. You have a lot to learn yet, and perhaps then... one day we could see yours. So far you hurt many just to push your pride up, how stupid. Nice voice is far not enough to become a great one like Leonard who hapened to create this great piece of music.
that song gets me laid all the time. "can you play the piano hunter"? "a little" "play something for me" "ok" "that was beautiful... can I buy YOU a drink"? "sure thing, doll" LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!
Unfortunately I cannot give this great song of our master Leonard both thumbs up - and it is precisely due to how Rufus treated this piece of true art. He wanted so much show himself, he did not care of true words and their meaning. What was supposed to be a "holy duck" for him. For many, and for all who know this song for so many years the holy ghost has a very meaningful presence in this part of the text, but no, Rufus wants so much to point his point of view he carelessly replaces ghost...
true, leonard cohen wrote it and buckley plays a great guitar cover, but the life that rufus brings to the song with his piano is amazing. I had the privilege to see him at a playhouse i worked at and he performed this. I find the piano version rufus has brought more moving.
he's just so amazing...this song makes me cry and it's my go to song when i need to cry.. and Rufus looks so good here!!@#! he really does look high or drunk but it's cute^^
I commented on this a long time ago and it's still goin' strong. This vid was actuaaly my inspiration to go out amongst 'em and shoot videos. I think of this before every video starts filming. I posted my first good video below, different genre and not of this quality but you sure can see how this great great great vid of this great great great performance influenced me. The firts thing to do is find something great to film!!
I love Rufus' version over anyone else's that I've heard and I've heard most of the ones talked about on this site. He is such a hugely talented songwriter and performer. Would love to see him perform. He is the sexiest gay guy I've ever seen.
Amazing amazing amazing. I know this was so long ago, but I'm looking for the Rufus Wainwright and Ben Folds version of "Careless Whisper" from this exact show (8+ years ago and I still remember how epic it was!). Do you happen to have it?
I never claimed that Rufus pioneered this at all. I just said that, in my opinion, his version is the best I've ever heard and that includes Buckley and Cale. Just my opinion.
I really didn't think he was gay. until i saw your guy's posts. I thought he was pretty cute. haha I love his version he's accent shows in his singing it sounds real good. he's one of not many that sounds about the same as the recording. love it!
This man sings the best version of "Hallelujah" ever. He just owns it.
The best version of this song, ever. Bar none.
He has an amazing, beautiful, strong voice. I could listen to this forever.
He made this song into a hymn about love. Amazing.

Beautiful voice really enjoyed the songs thanks love xxx

This is exactly how this song is meant to be sung...amazing little video of an amazing artist, thanks for sharing!
That look he has at about 2:55-59, like he spotted someone & smiled.
Vocally and visually gorgeous, as ever. Nice version.
Rufus is one of the singers who can sings (live) incredibly and I love him for that and for his beautiful songs!
I think Rufus's version is the best or at least one of the best. Can't get enough it.
Watching this just made my heart jump, physically jump. That boy is an angel.
The best "Hallelujah" what I heard anytime.
In my opinin this is one of the only Hallelujah covers that do Cohen justice. Though I quite enjoyed Imogen Heap's version as well. Mr Wainright is just fabulous and an amazing musician, singer and performer. Thanks for sharing this with us.
yes, it is truly is a transcendent piece of music the way RW performs it..just saw him sing it in concert last weekend in DC and everyone was moved.
I just discovered this song a couple of days ago. Quite beautiful.
I love this song and Rufus. Great Canadians.
I remember being at this performance.. it was so amazing!
My favorite cover ever!!!
Wonderful video! Thanks for sharing. Rufus is AMAZING!

Like a hymn. Beautiful.
Brilliant song, very moving was my son matts fav song - we played it at his service.

Both Rufus Wainright's and Jeff Buckley's rendition of this Leonard Cohen song are beautiful. Rufus is a great artist and musician.
love the emotion
Your god bless his voice!
he actually is looking behind and above the camera, but I still enjoyed it too, lol... he's so adorable and emotional.
Very great song!!

its finally the biggest choice,
to stay there and to litsten to,
lovely sounds rising in the wind and through
Phenomenal.
Rufus is amazing ...live and on album. But he's obviously toasted, beautifully beautifully toasted.
i just love him
Das Schlußlied aus dem Film "Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei" Klasse !!
Yes, a great version of a uplifting song
I also love Bruce's " Land of Hope and Dreams"
His concerts aren't as good as the recordings, but this one is my favorite. I listen to this just about everyday.
If it were not for him not being able to accept greatness as we can see it but rather steal form a master and try to put his sign on something he could not possibly create. Best version of the song in my opinion.
I agree, this is better than the recorded one.

this is what makes him so special.. :D
god he's such a gorgeous guy....hallelujah!
It evens out after the beginning! The camera was zoomed in all the way. Zoom magnifies camera shake.
It almost seems like his soul is overtaken when he sings this song. Amazing.
Amazing amazing amazing. I know this was so long ago, but I'm looking for the Rufus Wainwright and Ben Folds version of "Careless Whisper" from this exact show (8+ years ago and I still remember how epic it was!). Do you happen to have it?

this was played at a friends funeral , sounded great, considering it was a funeral, Leonard Cohen wrote this song
He sings this better than anyone who's ever attempted it.
I really didn't think he was gay. until i saw your guy's posts. I thought he was pretty cute. haha I love his version he's accent shows in his singing it sounds real good. he's one of not many that sounds about the same as the recording. love it!
Listen to Leonard Cohen's original and realise that this is the second best version.
Agreed. While Cohen wrote it, and I'm glad he did, his version doesn't do the lyrics justice. I'm glad there are remakes to choose from.
How great is this?
