this is exactly why xvm in game stats should be banned. in my opinion.by "in game" i mean live play, after game is fair, people typing them up in a browser screen can also be considered fair play, bc they are trading time for knowledge, but live stats, i have said many times, just need to be banned to protect its players. for people who are very against discrimination of any type, whether it be by race, religion, gender, etc., they dont seem to mind if its stat discrimination or discrimination by sniping out statistically stronger players. now, picking them out as Taugrim did based on knowledge of the game, clans, and even by watching them play to decide their threat level, i think is fair game and is a skill. it takes effort to learn and build up that keen eye. i also think xvm can cause the reverse effect, as in statistically weaker players are talked down upon, and looked at as inferior, again discrimination. sure, this wont solve it, but it sure will make it a lot more even in matches and the discrimination can wait till after match, so all players stronger or weaker in nature can play in peace without being sniped so hard based on numbers alone(without actually knowing-which i mentioned was a skill) and possibly save some insults from being slung. this is my opinion, but the experiment, the stats dont lie. could make the game better, more friendlier(during match anyways) than it currently is. i know its nice to have the stats there to help pick out who will be more helpful, but you can pick that out just by playing with them, again, adds to the skill.
@@josephzanes7563 It means you've consistently played the tank better than 99% of other players for a long time. Specifically, I think it mostly has to do with damage per game. I generally run a few rounds of gold ammo myself, but frankly 2-3 rounds of gold is far less of an advantage than say, running food 100% of the time.
Don't love the assumption that you will outspot the VK, which has stupid good VR for a heavy. However good call in going for cap giving how slow they are, and screw the haters on your team not appreciating the bottom tier carry. Making end game plays in a bottom tier is the most important thing anyone can do, so you gotta just stay alive to make that difference.
There wasn't really much I could do in the situation. I said in the video I needed 3 shots to kill him, but I think it was actually 4. His team must have been frustrated with the loss.
These two tanks have same base and both have radiomen. Love the 475m view on my VK, lost count numbers of times I've rounded/scraped a corner, spotted a TD at 400m and watched them scramble like a cockroach.
The fact that Taugrim gets hate as the sole survivor with 4 kills, bottom tier, makes me feel a little better about some of the seemingly random hate I occasionally receive in game.
@@matthbva Me too with my 48% although I have improved a lot recently. I think it is funny how I get less hate, but when i actually did once carry a 1 vs 4 once (two artillery and another bad player though) but it was still one of my best moments in a TD that was when 2 teammates got very salty so this seems to be a common phenomenon.

That decision from reversing the counter clockwise around the mountain to backing up and taking cover on the ridge rather than going clockwise to outguess the other guy was smart. Nice job
Funny, that, eh? I find that probably 80% of the players who do the most whining are also the ones who didn't meaningfully contribute or camped at the back uselessly.
Good player are alive and playing (driving and shooting with no time to chat and ping for 40 times) dead players who are good or bad..yup even good, have time to type in the chat.
My favorites are the ones who say "glhf" at the beginning of the match and are then cursing everyone else on the team when they played and died like a donkey.
Hi Tuagrim, I enjoyed watching this video in the UK while having breakfast this Wednesday morning. Great tips and commentary as always. I see that the friendly Jagtiger 20:18 is not your greatest fan. Picking up on the stats about Arty targeting Unicums, I was not shocked by this but pleasantly surprised. When playing arty I always target Unicums to help my team get rid of these excellent and very dangerous players. Yes its situational and if there is a problem that is more urgent then it needs to be addressed.

LemmingRush's thoughts on what makes the game toxic has more truth than this thread and what I have read any thing in this post. (ruclips.net/video/5EHSz3340vg/видео.html) Arty is this game, luv what they can do for you on your team, inform them what you would like them focus on before game. After all this supposed to be TEAM Play NOT hate mongering against a class of vehicle in a game. Think real world, arty support for your team. Here is how I focus my shots in game: Arty, Tank Destroyers, light tanks, and targets of opportunity (idiots that won't move) or over aggressive. BTW, I don't use XVM, I just observe how others play, and if a strategic player is affecting the game I will do my best to get them into a one shot kill range.
When I grinded through the Pershing I found it to be mediocre in nearly every aspect relative to other mediums. Every aspect of the tank was just good enough to not be bad. Yet I still was able to have some amazing games in this tank. Its so mediocre that it forces you to play better.
Unlocked this a few weeks ago, on my way to the m46/m48, it’s just awful! The speed of a heavy, the armor of a light, and a gun that would be acceptable one tier down. So frustrating. Thanks for the video! Picked up a few tips.
Wow man, those were two fantastic replays. You got lucky in the first one bouncing that type heavy's ap round but other than that, those were outstanding replays. I'd be damn proud of the decision making there on display.
Awesome work Taugrim! I'm on the EU server, but you and SirFoch have inspired me to play without gold, only silver ammo. It isn't easy, but it really forces me to think ahead and plan. It does wonders for my credit income though. I am f2p, and XP income is the biggest issue, honestly. Thanks for the inspiration and tips/techniques. Keep it up!
my biggest weakness as a player these days is lack of patience and over-extending. thanks for your really patient and quiet approach. had the opportunity to be in a game with you. i threw out my strategy just to follow you around and learn. had a mediocre game but we won.
The really fine line is knowing when to be aggressive and when to be patient. That in particular is why I featured that Cliff battle. For much of it, based on map control, my best play was to punish their tier 10s every time they poked on hill. But after they were dead, I had much more flexibility.
Great work man! I can't believe you are running no premium ammo on something like this! Great experiment! Seems like it would cost you some extra games though, right? You also don't run food, and I recently have got in the habit of it, as it makes tanks more accurate, as well as boosting everything, often allowing you to get the spotting assisted damage even when lower tiers. Better camo, better acceleration, faster aimtime. How do you feel about food? And wow, AceTechmo is such a horrible griefer. That was hard to watch, must have been mind numbing to deal with in game. I run that mod that disables ping spam. Now he will be immortalized as a horrible person, and a wrong one at that, as you helped your team pull off the unimaginable! Grats man!
Yes, without a doubt if I were loading, say, 25% of my load as premium ammo, and making use of it when appropriate, my win rate and stats would be meaningfully better. Garbad has tested with and without gold ammo and he finds that it boosts his damage per game by ~15-30%. That is a HUGE difference. I use food only to get to 445m view range. Otherwise I'd rather have an Auto Fire Extinguisher and better credit income.
You are aware that the extra view range beyond 445 is useful in that it negates the camo skills, right? IE two identical tanks side by side, you will be getting the spotting damage over the person without the food. ie more credit income, combined with more accurate quicker aimed shots means shooting less wasted ammo, ie better profits. For 20k I think it is a fair argument, especially if you aren't min maxing with a bia vents low caliber platform, but what I have noticed in my experiment over the last few weeks is it is essential to have on light tanks where VR and camo are the top two metrics, and that if you stock up on food at 50% off sale, its hard to argue the price/performance being a problem. On a side note, it is helping me in that I am more careful with my play, considering I might go negative in my earnings. Early I won't have bigger margins as I continue to refine and increase life expectancy, but I feel as though it is helping me curb my aggression. I have also been running the firefighter directive, at 2 bonds per game, and that helps negate the biggest downside, running no FPE. It's really helped. Are you going to call the silver experiment quits at some point? It's amazing and noble, and keeps you clear of the anti premium rounds crowd, but most of them already left the game if they had major issues with it. Most people just use the appropriate round when needed. Worse yet I feel you are pandering toward the wrong audience in that if they make that argument, they can't understand the complexity of the game to the point that it would benefit them anyway, ie thinking premium rounds make a person good. IE the person that thinks its the access to great equipment that makes a great athlete. Its just so often that you need premium rounds to even be able to pen weak spots on some tanks today. I am surprised that so many were interested in a Pershing video as it has been power-creeped and never was a top choice. It is one of the very few tanks I have sold. I have been stuck at C5 on Cliff often when in a slow tank, and just trying to find a way to contribute. Plus while I am no Unicom, I am good enough that arty seems to focus me (more likely an indication of how many potatoes are in random battles). That T-34-2 was one of those jerks that clicks continuously after dying - so you had to go to settings to blacklist him.
@@taugrim That's the real reason why i could never have fun playing it. No matter I what I try. I got bored with it pretty fast, so i eventually sold mine. I still can't understand how or why some people actually enjoyed the M26. It could be Russian propaganda as well, It makes American tanks look weak.
Just finished the Pershing. It wasn't as bad as I expected but it really needs some help. Even though reality isn't much of a factor in WoT I don't expect it to be given more mobility to allow it to flank so it's got to be the gun. With such low alpha and bad accuracy a RoF increase wouldn't be out of the question OR give it more alpha to make up for the longish reload and bad accuracy. I was able to work with the pen since if you come across something you'll have a hard time penning with AP you at least have the option to use APCR but I wouldn't mind seeing a pen increase on par with the SP.
The American M-26 Pershing tanks were originally considered heavy tank thus it performs pretty badly as a medium tank, but it can be played as a TD or a spotter the only thing it does really good view range and gun depression. This is how I have played most of the time this tank and have got the four masterly to prove it is a good tank but just not understood what and why it is what it is, (it is a lightly armored heavium with a decent gun, good gun depression, good view range, and decent turret transverse offset by poor power, speed, hull transverse, and poorly armored overall, Oh and it’s huge for a medium tank Lol) still it’s pretty decent tank bad at what others are good at but good at what others should really be good at too. Just remember to play it like your on your last hit points most American tanks have to played like this!
i like these two videos rather than the those easy 1375 games cuz these 2 games are really exciting to watch and what happened is really near my game experience hope we can see more exciting games and more thought processing in ur videos...and also playing tanks without prem ammo in 2018 is really respectfull consider the current meta in the game...if i were u in the cliff map i may press 2 key and going to the TD position back on the map and snipe a shitload of them and losing tones of credits afterwards....but u just show another way to play a mind game not just a money game in reality..great stuff gg bro!
by the way i think the pershing is balanced by its prem ammo....it has so many bad aspects just because it has extreme high penetration prem ammo compare the other tier VIIIs mediums
As one currently going through the Pershing, this tank is quite hard to pay well with. The T20 was okay-ish for its tier, but facing X battles in the Pershing is really, really bad. It shows quite well how much the US tanks are suffering from the powercreep the other nations go through.
It used to be easiest medium line together with british one, before they buffed T44. I believe that Leopard, E50M and STB lines are still worse and AMX30B and Chiniese meds doesn't seem very popular. Not even russian pancakes. And T62A is completely obsolete.
I m glad u are doing guide for american meds. M48 will be top of the tree next month so,many players will try to get it. This video rly helps with this akward tank. Gj mate. :-)
Great video and outstanding efforts as low tier in both matches. I love the Pershing, but do have to agree with you about some of its weaknesses. I find that it is fairly agile EXCEPT for climbing hills where it is a dog. You definitely got the most out of the tank, especially when forsaking its excellent 268 pen APCR and using only AP. Thank you for your efforts!
Great games and info. I absolutely hated the grind through the pershing. I love my Patton tho. I mostly play the arty I'm grinding now tho. I don't use any mods, xvm included. It just makes for a more enjoyable game. Thanks for the vid.
I vote taugrim plays 100 games in the T46 Patton using the 215mm pen on the standard ammunition and then plays 100 games using the 265mm pen gold ammunition. I want to see what difference it makes.
for locking turret in position and looking around you just hold the right mouse button, which can be annoying when it autoaims you (I put autoaim on E for that reason) and also it sometimes locks your turret even once you let go of the mouse button (just right click again to let it move again). I don't recall having to turn that on in the options anywhere, should be standard layout. Even I feel arty focus sometimes as 2000+ WN8 player, but whenever I platoon with better players it massively shifts to them.
I don't know how ya do it Taugrim with not even a few gold rounds into you tank. I know I load atleast 5 to 8 in any of my tanks even though I might not use them I sometime feel like I am forced to and I will hit the 2 key specially being bottom tier in a tier 8. But kudos to you Taugrim. Your a better man then me Charlie Brown.LoL
A couple of things I always advise capping is bad until it is not :) also unless you have a very small calibre gun or very limit ammo always take a few HE shells, I have seen many people only take ap and prem shells but a few do come in handy.
I have switched to a xvm cammo account and it's been so refreshing not being arta focused every game. I doubt I will play my main account in randoms ever again.
View range and gun handling are the boons of the Pershing. I love mine, with BIA and Camo crew, I can play spotter and with the superior on the move gun handling, I can easily flank and circle slower opponents.
I had difficulties with the M26 but still managed to get decent scores in that. In the other hand M46 is just a great vehicle. I averaged 5.1K damage in my first 5 games in that one. :P I free exp:d the gun, turret and suspension. I just love the M46 Patton.
Tbh it's still kinda bearable when the XVM snipers get taken down with you = rushing you in a light tank etc. Still not fun but at least they lose something too. But it gets really frustrating when they can just continue doing it and still get away with their tanks (arties).
Hurry up with the M46 for your own sake, with the top gun it really is one of the most fun to play tanks in the game in the best tier. I married mine and I'll become Mormon and marry yours too if you won't. Everything about the M26 that's so rage inducingly just shy of mediocre is suddenly better then average in the M46. It's one of the few tanks in serious tiers that has high alpha AND high DPM and the gun handling is so good that most of the time you won't even notice the low penetration and accuracy and to top it off it gets great gun depression and a good turret for which you pay no price at all.

I haven't played Cent7/1 since they introduced CentAX, but I would say M46 is better. Centurion7 used to be good only as hulldown tank and long range sniper. It worked well, but maps were changing to encourage brawling in the corridors. Then they nerfed turret armor and it became bad, but they buffed it lately. As far I remember centurion was huge, so it was hard to hide, it had barely better reload than heavy tanks and it was pretty helpless on city maps. It is very strong at certain positions, but weak otherwise. Obj430 is pretty good at city maps, but it's not great as sniper (just as bad as patton), it feels slow (just as patton, but patton is more agile) and it relies on armor to survive. I would say it's good, but somewhat boring. M46 has horrible penetration at distance, it's not the fastest medium (it usually goes from 40-46), it has rather bad accuracy, it has no camo, but it has it's strengths. Turret is mounted in the front and it has good gun depression, so you can peek around hills or corners without being exposed too much. Gun stats (accuracy on the move, aim time, turret rotation speed) are excellent so you don't need to aim at short distance, which means not being exposed too long. Basically M46 is all about not being exposed to enemy fire and fighting at close to medium range. I would say it's very versatile, but in different ways than T54 or Obj430 which must somewhat rely on armor and which are more effective at bullying lower tier tanks.
Chandler, I agree completely with Pavelp80 below. The only thing he didn't mention is the DPM which is about 3150 on my fully equiped M46. That's 3150 DPM combined with 400 Alpha damage and NO aimtime. That's not a common combination. I've always liked all of the Centurions for historical and technical reasons and I like the hill sniping playstyle so I've always been prepared to put up their weaknesses. The 7/1 has recently seen huge buffs but it's still over-specialized and curiously still centered on a stillborn gamemechanic (the HESH rounds). Centurions weaknesses amplify each other and limit it's ability to bring it's strengths into play while the Patton's strengths make it's weaknesses into minor annoyances. 1 Tip: If you like the M46 Patton and plan on keeping it, then buy yourself a Thunderbolt. It's cheap and that Brothers in Arms crew does wonders on the M48A5. IThe M48's soft stats are so good that with BiA and Vents you can drop the Vertical Stabilizers. Not that there's to much use for that free slot unless you like having 550 meter viewrange but it might give you an edge.
Have you played the amx30 and how do they compare, i have the amx 30 and i Love it. But to me the m46 just seems worse apart from aim time and a bit of Gun depression
I hadn't played it in so long. I played through it over the winter on EU. I did not remember the tank being as bad as it it. WG needs to give it some love. It was fun when I ground through it on NA years ago. It's so bad in this meta. Great games!
I just found this old video (love your videos BTW) but I have to say that the "study" you quoted from Reddit is not valid unless the exact same maps were played on both accounts and from the same spawn, same enemy team make up, etc. as different maps, different spawns and different team make up will change how you have to play (maybe less arty-safe for example). I 'm not saying that XVM focus isn't real but I don't think it's as prolific as this "study" makes it look. Thanks as always for the great content.
woo. i am moving to us. this never happens in europe. here all go to 1 square on the map. dig in. and wait to die. that takes about 5 min every battle. so playing wot now is NO FUN AT AL. and i started playing in 2011. have more than 300 tanks in the garage. 44 of them are premium. taugrim, like always... good work mate. keep it up. thank you. it is a joy watching you play. you make it look so easy. but there is 1 thing i do not understand???? when i shoot tanks in the same place that you do! my shots miss or bounce. no matter what tank i get in front. i should ALWAYS use gold ammo. and even then i do not pen. gues you have to be unicum to pen a tank. or not low role with all the shots that do pen. i wonder who else can consistently bounce on arty? no matter where you shoot them! sorry, starting to rage again... will be banned forever soon. sins i only started shooting my own team. that is.... if they all go to the same place. which is sad. loved this game for years. but i will keep watching your videos, sir. love them. btw, a team that is packed together in 1 place, is of no use at all. when the first enemy tank gets spotted..... Awesome work again. Showing bottom tier game play along with just shooting nothing but AP ammo and having no pay to win rounds loaded. Proves it to people that players can actually play without having to shoot pay to win ammo. But still to this day there is way to many gold rounds being shot for no reason in witch is showing people don't have the skill to aim for weak spots like you can taugrim. But great game play and good work like always. Oh and arty shooting a bottom tier tank when there is more dangerous tanks then a pershing damn XVM using trash players. But that was some damn F@&king good game play the last video.

Premium ammo is a tool, but an over-reliance on it can skill-cap a player negatively. People fire gold ammo instead of learning weak spots or getting easy flanking shots on targets.
I'm very impressed by your video's, especially because you use a lot of bottom tier battles to show how to play the tanks and still be able to influence the outcome for the better. What I like the most is that you usually don't use any premium rounds. This shows real skill in outplaying people and think of good strategies. This is what I love about the game and it's sad that a lot of players just press "2" and win. I love the challenge to outplay others, even though I know I will never reach unicum level. That's not a problem for me =) I made a new account and went first for this line, though tier 5-8 I don't like. Your video's have helped me to get a better look at them and perform better now. I bought T20 today and actually wanted to try to 3-mark it, but I went to get the Pershing as soon as possible to be able to play it in the Frontline mode.
@Taugrim Thnx for the videos , I enjoy them very much. Do you consider coated optics a must in mediums? I usually use vertical/rammer/vents combo, you think I put myself in a bad spot cause of that? Thnx in advance.
I'm a HUGE advocate for vision control, especially Optics in all mediums and lights. Vision control = 1st Shot Advantage (1SA). 1SA is one of the most powerful concepts in the game.
Thnx for advice friend. I use them in all my lights for sure, will try them on on a few of the meds I play most and see how it goes (will forego ventilation).
I would say, coated optics is a must in everything that is not meant to camp except blind heavies or TDs (is3). If you have heavy tank with turret that can take a hit from TD, use coated optics just for spotting TDs, it may help to you, it may help to your allies. Maybe there's an exception: if you have crazy view range (e.g. 485m with optics on M46 Patton with 5 skill crew), you can possibly swap optics for vents and cola, which reduces view range to something above 470m, but it boosts gun stats and agility. This is expensive setup, but you may have better feeling from playing that tank.
I haven't seen any recent Panther 2 reviews. That thing is the middle child of a Panther and an E 50: no armor, huge as fuck, and has a gun that tends to behave on its own. Another indication that it's hard to play or flat out sucks is that you don't see it that often in battles. I'd really like to see how you play it cause, currently, I struggle a bit with it :)
That story about arty targeting unicums seems pretty weird. I believe that not everyone uses XVM (I stopped like year and half ago) and that arty targets only unicums. When I play arty I'm usually targetting my favorite positions which, I believe, are strong and then I'm targeting tanks flanking my allies or tanks at weird angles, that are in annoying positions. Those are likely green or better players. When I used XVM i choosed unicums just when there were two players close to each other, but never tried to chase them everywhere on the map.
I don't focus people *because* they are Unicums. I fire on the most easy or the most dangerous targets. I don't tunnel them like an obsessed, bitter moron. As a matter of fact, in many battles I make it a point to kill the non-Unicums because they're easier targets, strip away the enemy Unicums' pubbie meatshields, then kill the Unicums. I don't use XVM. I've never used a single mod. I was probably at a meaningful disadvantage doing so, but WG has added many of the best features from mods to the game client: last spotted location, view/render circles, hit log.
1. I was focusing their top-tier players who were providing spotting and sniping our tanks from hill. 2. They were the only viable targets in that situation. 3. Every time I fired at them, they could fire back. This is not the case with arty when they are far away

I don't use XVM, I think it's bad for the game as it clearly represents an unfair advantage over those who don't use it. I do however use those optional signs that show progression through the campaign etc as a target prioritiser when I'm in arty. The hate doesn't bother me, I didn't make the game or create the arty missions.
Agreed. It's not the player's fault there's in-battle access to stats - that's on the WG for allowing that to happen. Same goes for the existence of arty.
Yeah sure, whenever I play SPG, I'll seek for top 5 player with highest WN8, and target him. Especially when his/her tank is slow. "Meteors away!" Great play anyway!
when driving arty, i just shoot whatever is available. i mostly target squishy tanks with dangerous guns and support the flank that is more likely to fall. only when i have several available targets i sometimes go for the highest wn8.
I just got the Pershing I loved it for one game which is my first game after that I hated it and it's going to be a slow long grind especially coming off in the t20 literally completing that tank in the day I'm really liking the t20
This is a little discouraging. I just started playing in December , the xmas event was running when i started. I'm working my way up the American medium tank line and just got the T-20 yesterday , i was hoping the Pershing would be better than your preview shows.
@@taugrim I put an all female crew in the t20 and i am grinding up in it now. I need 60k more exp in T20 to get Pershing , by the time i get that grind done my Fem crew should have nice skills for the Patton.I have another 100% crew in E2 Jumbo and just unlocked T29 last night , i have never been in T29 so i don't know if i want to move up to it right away or sit in the Jumbo and grind more exp in it before going to the heavy. So far the Jumbo is my favorite , it's noob forgiving.
I am merely green and I swear I sometimes get focused by arty. There have been too many times when I’ve been bottom tier on a team full of red and orange players, and I find myself getting clicked instead of another tank near me that’s a tier or two higher, and seemingly also exposed.
M26 was the most frustrating tank on my way to the pattons... T20 is great, the M46 is greate, the Jumbo (M4A3E2) and M4 are fun to play but this M26 was just pain. I used all my free exp to pass it...
Solid review of the tank Taug, I know we both had nearly 100% the same opinion on the tank while grinding it. I hated it. I am currently taking a tiny break from the game and not playing near as much, I will be on a bit to play a few games every once in a while for a mission or what ever. Msg me in game if you are gunna be on at a specific time and we can try to toon some t9s when you buy the m46 patton. I will work on making enough credits to buy mine. Or we can play w/e tier I am always good for anything.
I have to hope when the m46 has max upgrades it will be a better tank to play. Reason being t9 is far kinder in MM than t8 and at least the turret looks like it will try to work more often. But need to play it before I can say really.
M46 is really powerful thanks to the gun. It's also more mobile + the turret can bounce quite well especially when using the nice gun depression. It's so much more enjoyable for me than M26.
High penetration & high alpha damage is just really toxic in late game stages where you often find yourself in low hp tanks needing to drive up to TD which are often Full HP and will have the first shot advantage which arty is easily to deal with end game (Except the situations you get auto-aimed and clicked)
Maybe you could apply this to the English mediums weak bodies strong turrets. I am currently going down that line. Hopefully xvm is still a thing as arty will NEVER shoot me. :)
Hey Taugrim, not sure if you even read these comments anymore, but i like your videos and they make sense, was wondering if you or anyone reading these can help me out, im trying hard to learn "ridgeline" combat, please tell me if im doing it wrong...if the hill im climbing up and once i almost crest over it..what i do is i go into sniper mode...put my turret ALL the way down (m26) and inch up slowly until i can see the ridgeline is at level with the bottom of my reticle...if that makes any sense..is this the correct move with the m26, to just only expose my turret..but idk what im doing wrong because im getting hit all the time on my hull or lower glacius...when i zoom out of sniper mode...i can clearly see my tank hull is not exposed...its so frustrating when trying to learn to only expose your tank...and also in this ridgeline fighting do you use sniper mode? or autolock on...and as soon as you seen green you fire...thanks! keep up the good work!
You realize you were commenting on getting focused by arty simply because you are purple, while YOU are focusing the enemy tanks because they are purple? XVM targeting is good tactical sense... It's a thing because XVM is visible in game. It doesn't mean you're a bad player or cheating, it means you are smart and using ALL the tools available to you.
I want to comment on that reddit thread. Did he play on his uni account first? If yes to make it accurate he should do that again but reverse the order because otherwise we can't be sure if getting targeted by arty while in an arty experiment didn't make him more cautious the more he played.
The Pershing has always been the low point of the US medium tank line since the tier 10 mediums were introduced. The Soviet T-44 is just better, while still underwhelming, when compared to the Centurion or STA-1. And on the Patton you get one of the worst grinds in the game. The 105mm requires the highest amount of exp in the game to unlock... even though the gun is rather mediocre in everything except dpm. And remember how in the past you also had to research the top gun on the M48, a tier 10 tank. Wargaming doesn't really line the US medium line.
I have made through many unpopular tanks just fine, including stuffs like T-34-2 or Chi-Ri. Black Prince, on the other hand, is a total garbage. It has low alpha, low DPM (lower than Churchill VII) and low pen gun. Armor is laughable against same/higher tier, it can't even sidescrap properly. As slow as T-95. Has no gun depression. Your best play is literally limited to 'rushing' same tier heavy tanks so that they can't peek a boo at you, and taking/baiting fire for your allies that have better gun so you can win games. At bottom tier, you literally only can shoot whoever that have mercy at you and show their soft sides and use HP as your only armor.
Get 100k freeXP even for money. I rather spend time at work than by grinding some tanks (Black Prince, TVP and stock Sturer Emil) for weekend or two. There are tanks that I hate, but some of them are too much. Tier 9 conqueror is my favorite heavy tank together with T10.
Nice "unicum barrelroll" there, will be nice to put this kind of retrospective for the commentary of spgs dmgs on good players in a wg forum. A nice decision is to hide personal ratings to avoid this kind of sick focus.

this is exactly why xvm in game stats should be banned. in my opinion.by "in game" i mean live play, after game is fair, people typing them up in a browser screen can also be considered fair play, bc they are trading time for knowledge, but live stats, i have said many times, just need to be banned to protect its players. for people who are very against discrimination of any type, whether it be by race, religion, gender, etc., they dont seem to mind if its stat discrimination or discrimination by sniping out statistically stronger players. now, picking them out as Taugrim did based on knowledge of the game, clans, and even by watching them play to decide their threat level, i think is fair game and is a skill. it takes effort to learn and build up that keen eye. i also think xvm can cause the reverse effect, as in statistically weaker players are talked down upon, and looked at as inferior, again discrimination. sure, this wont solve it, but it sure will make it a lot more even in matches and the discrimination can wait till after match, so all players stronger or weaker in nature can play in peace without being sniped so hard based on numbers alone(without actually knowing-which i mentioned was a skill) and possibly save some insults from being slung. this is my opinion, but the experiment, the stats dont lie. could make the game better, more friendlier(during match anyways) than it currently is. i know its nice to have the stats there to help pick out who will be more helpful, but you can pick that out just by playing with them, again, adds to the skill.

@@josephzanes7563 It means you've consistently played the tank better than 99% of other players for a long time. Specifically, I think it mostly has to do with damage per game. I generally run a few rounds of gold ammo myself, but frankly 2-3 rounds of gold is far less of an advantage than say, running food 100% of the time.

Don't love the assumption that you will outspot the VK, which has stupid good VR for a heavy. However good call in going for cap giving how slow they are, and screw the haters on your team not appreciating the bottom tier carry. Making end game plays in a bottom tier is the most important thing anyone can do, so you gotta just stay alive to make that difference.
There wasn't really much I could do in the situation. I said in the video I needed 3 shots to kill him, but I think it was actually 4.
His team must have been frustrated with the loss.
I was kinda expecting you to close the gap and just circle him to death, but obviously that would present the risk of taking a hit.
These two tanks have same base and both have radiomen. Love the 475m view on my VK, lost count numbers of times I've rounded/scraped a corner, spotted a TD at 400m and watched them scramble like a cockroach.
The fact that Taugrim gets hate as the sole survivor with 4 kills, bottom tier, makes me feel a little better about some of the seemingly random hate I occasionally receive in game.
@@matthbva Me too with my 48% although I have improved a lot recently. I think it is funny how I get less hate, but when i actually did once carry a 1 vs 4 once (two artillery and another bad player though) but it was still one of my best moments in a TD that was when 2 teammates got very salty so this seems to be a common phenomenon.

Picking up on the stats about Arty targeting Unicums, I was not shocked by this but pleasantly surprised. When playing arty I always target Unicums to help my team get rid of these excellent and very dangerous players. Yes its situational and if there is a problem that is more urgent then it needs to be addressed.

I've had plenty of friendlies not understand what I was doing nor why. That Jagdtiger player is probably another example.

Arty is this game, luv what they can do for you on your team, inform them what you would like them focus on before game. After all this supposed to be TEAM Play NOT hate mongering against a class of vehicle in a game. Think real world, arty support for your team. Here is how I focus my shots in game: Arty, Tank Destroyers, light tanks, and targets of opportunity (idiots that won't move) or over aggressive. BTW, I don't use XVM, I just observe how others play, and if a strategic player is affecting the game I will do my best to get them into a one shot kill range.
When I grinded through the Pershing I found it to be mediocre in nearly every aspect relative to other mediums. Every aspect of the tank was just good enough to not be bad. Yet I still was able to have some amazing games in this tank. Its so mediocre that it forces you to play better.
Unlocked this a few weeks ago, on my way to the m46/m48, it’s just awful! The speed of a heavy, the armor of a light, and a gun that would be acceptable one tier down. So frustrating.

I likely bounced the Type 5's shell on the edge of the turret. It's thick enough to not get triple-overmatched.
Awesome work Taugrim! I'm on the EU server, but you and SirFoch have inspired me to play without gold, only silver ammo. It isn't easy, but it really forces me to think ahead and plan. It does wonders for my credit income though. I am f2p, and XP income is the biggest issue, honestly. Thanks for the inspiration and tips/techniques. Keep it up!
my biggest weakness as a player these days is lack of patience and over-extending. thanks for your really patient and quiet approach. had the opportunity to be in a game with you. i threw out my strategy just to follow you around and learn. had a mediocre game but we won.
The really fine line is knowing when to be aggressive and when to be patient. That in particular is why I featured that Cliff battle. For much of it, based on map control, my best play was to punish their tier 10s every time they poked on hill. But after they were dead, I had much more flexibility.
I really needed some inspiration to grind through this tank. It's a really boring experience.

Great work man! I can't believe you are running no premium ammo on something like this! Great experiment! Seems like it would cost you some extra games though, right? You also don't run food, and I recently have got in the habit of it, as it makes tanks more accurate, as well as boosting everything, often allowing you to get the spotting assisted damage even when lower tiers. Better camo, better acceleration, faster aimtime. How do you feel about food? And wow, AceTechmo is such a horrible griefer. That was hard to watch, must have been mind numbing to deal with in game. I run that mod that disables ping spam. Now he will be immortalized as a horrible person, and a wrong one at that, as you helped your team pull off the unimaginable! Grats man!
Yes, without a doubt if I were loading, say, 25% of my load as premium ammo, and making use of it when appropriate, my win rate and stats would be meaningfully better.
Garbad has tested with and without gold ammo and he finds that it boosts his damage per game by ~15-30%. That is a HUGE difference.
I use food only to get to 445m view range. Otherwise I'd rather have an Auto Fire Extinguisher and better credit income.
You are aware that the extra view range beyond 445 is useful in that it negates the camo skills, right? IE two identical tanks side by side, you will be getting the spotting damage over the person without the food. ie more credit income, combined with more accurate quicker aimed shots means shooting less wasted ammo, ie better profits.
For 20k I think it is a fair argument, especially if you aren't min maxing with a bia vents low caliber platform, but what I have noticed in my experiment over the last few weeks is it is essential to have on light tanks where VR and camo are the top two metrics, and that if you stock up on food at 50% off sale, its hard to argue the price/performance being a problem.
On a side note, it is helping me in that I am more careful with my play, considering I might go negative in my earnings. Early I won't have bigger margins as I continue to refine and increase life expectancy, but I feel as though it is helping me curb my aggression.
I have also been running the firefighter directive, at 2 bonds per game, and that helps negate the biggest downside, running no FPE. It's really helped.
Are you going to call the silver experiment quits at some point? It's amazing and noble, and keeps you clear of the anti premium rounds crowd, but most of them already left the game if they had major issues with it. Most people just use the appropriate round when needed. Worse yet I feel you are pandering toward the wrong audience in that if they make that argument, they can't understand the complexity of the game to the point that it would benefit them anyway, ie thinking premium rounds make a person good. IE the person that thinks its the access to great equipment that makes a great athlete. Its just so often that you need premium rounds to even be able to pen weak spots on some tanks today.

American tanks burn too much for that. Especially anything on a pershing/patton hull. Poor module size and Hp means ammo racks and fires for days

I am surprised that so many were interested in a Pershing video as it has been power-creeped and never was a top choice. It is one of the very few tanks I have sold. I have been stuck at C5 on Cliff often when in a slow tank, and just trying to find a way to contribute. Plus while I am no Unicom, I am good enough that arty seems to focus me (more likely an indication of how many potatoes are in random battles). That T-34-2 was one of those jerks that clicks continuously after dying - so you had to go to settings to blacklist him.
People ask me to review tanks that are:
1. popular, or
2. overpowered, or
3. underpowered / difficult to play
The Pershing clearly falls in #3.

I still can't understand how or why some people actually enjoyed the M26. It could be Russian propaganda as well, It makes American tanks look weak.
Just finished the Pershing. It wasn't as bad as I expected but it really needs some help. Even though reality isn't much of a factor in WoT I don't expect it to be given more mobility to allow it to flank so it's got to be the gun. With such low alpha and bad accuracy a RoF increase wouldn't be out of the question OR give it more alpha to make up for the longish reload and bad accuracy. I was able to work with the pen since if you come across something you'll have a hard time penning with AP you at least have the option to use APCR but I wouldn't mind seeing a pen increase on par with the SP.
The American M-26 Pershing tanks were originally considered heavy tank thus it performs pretty badly as a medium tank, but it can be played as a TD or a spotter the only thing it does really good view range and gun depression. This is how I have played most of the time this tank and have got the four masterly to prove it is a good tank but just not understood what and why it is what it is, (it is a lightly armored heavium with a decent gun, good gun depression, good view range, and decent turret transverse offset by poor power, speed, hull transverse, and poorly armored overall, Oh and it’s huge for a medium tank Lol) still it’s pretty decent tank bad at what others are good at but good at what others should really be good at too. Just remember to play it like your on your last hit points most American tanks have to played like this!

hope we can see more exciting games and more thought processing in ur videos...and also playing tanks without prem ammo in 2018 is really respectfull consider the current meta in the game...if i were u in the cliff map i may press 2 key and going to the TD position back on the map and snipe a shitload of them and losing tones of credits afterwards....but u just show another way to play a mind game not just a money game in reality..great stuff gg bro!
by the way i think the pershing is balanced by its prem ammo....it has so many bad aspects just because it has extreme high penetration prem ammo compare the other tier VIIIs mediums

As one currently going through the Pershing, this tank is quite hard to pay well with.
The T20 was okay-ish for its tier, but facing X battles in the Pershing is really, really bad.
It shows quite well how much the US tanks are suffering from the powercreep the other nations go through.
It used to be easiest medium line together with british one, before they buffed T44. I believe that Leopard, E50M and STB lines are still worse and AMX30B and Chiniese meds doesn't seem very popular. Not even russian pancakes. And T62A is completely obsolete.
I m glad u are doing guide for american meds. M48 will be top of the tree next month so,many players will try to get it. This video rly helps with this akward tank. Gj mate. :-)
Great video and outstanding efforts as low tier in both matches. I love the Pershing, but do have to agree with you about some of its weaknesses. I find that it is fairly agile EXCEPT for climbing hills where it is a dog. You definitely got the most out of the tank, especially when forsaking its excellent 268 pen APCR and using only AP. Thank you for your efforts!

I vote taugrim plays 100 games in the T46 Patton using the 215mm pen on the standard ammunition and then plays 100 games using the 265mm pen gold ammunition. I want to see what difference it makes.

for locking turret in position and looking around you just hold the right mouse button, which can be annoying when it autoaims you (I put autoaim on E for that reason) and also it sometimes locks your turret even once you let go of the mouse button (just right click again to let it move again). I don't recall having to turn that on in the options anywhere, should be standard layout.
Even I feel arty focus sometimes as 2000+ WN8 player, but whenever I platoon with better players it massively shifts to them.
I don't know how ya do it Taugrim with not even a few gold rounds into you tank. I know I load atleast 5 to 8 in any of my tanks even though I might not use them I sometime feel like I am forced to and I will hit the 2 key specially being bottom tier in a tier 8. But kudos to you Taugrim. Your a better man then me Charlie Brown.LoL

A couple of things I always advise capping is bad until it is not :) also unless you have a very small calibre gun or very limit ammo always take a few HE shells, I have seen many people only take ap and prem shells but a few do come in handy.
I have switched to a xvm cammo account and it's been so refreshing not being arta focused every game. I doubt I will play my main account in randoms ever again.
View range and gun handling are the boons of the Pershing. I love mine, with BIA and Camo crew, I can play spotter and with the superior on the move gun handling, I can easily flank and circle slower opponents.
I had difficulties with the M26 but still managed to get decent scores in that. In the other hand M46 is just a great vehicle. I averaged 5.1K damage in my first 5 games in that one. :P I free exp:d the gun, turret and suspension. I just love the M46 Patton.
Tbh it's still kinda bearable when the XVM snipers get taken down with you = rushing you in a light tank etc. Still not fun but at least they lose something too. But it gets really frustrating when they can just continue doing it and still get away with their tanks (arties).

Everything about the M26 that's so rage inducingly just shy of mediocre is suddenly better then average in the M46. It's one of the few tanks in serious tiers that has high alpha AND high DPM and the gun handling is so good that most of the time you won't even notice the low penetration and accuracy and to top it off it gets great gun depression and a good turret for which you pay no price at all.

I haven't played Cent7/1 since they introduced CentAX, but I would say M46 is better. Centurion7 used to be good only as hulldown tank and long range sniper. It worked well, but maps were changing to encourage brawling in the corridors. Then they nerfed turret armor and it became bad, but they buffed it lately. As far I remember centurion was huge, so it was hard to hide, it had barely better reload than heavy tanks and it was pretty helpless on city maps. It is very strong at certain positions, but weak otherwise.
Obj430 is pretty good at city maps, but it's not great as sniper (just as bad as patton), it feels slow (just as patton, but patton is more agile) and it relies on armor to survive. I would say it's good, but somewhat boring.
M46 has horrible penetration at distance, it's not the fastest medium (it usually goes from 40-46), it has rather bad accuracy, it has no camo, but it has it's strengths. Turret is mounted in the front and it has good gun depression, so you can peek around hills or corners without being exposed too much. Gun stats (accuracy on the move, aim time, turret rotation speed) are excellent so you don't need to aim at short distance, which means not being exposed too long. Basically M46 is all about not being exposed to enemy fire and fighting at close to medium range. I would say it's very versatile, but in different ways than T54 or Obj430 which must somewhat rely on armor and which are more effective at bullying lower tier tanks.
Chandler, I agree completely with Pavelp80 below. The only thing he didn't mention is the DPM which is about 3150 on my fully equiped M46. That's 3150 DPM combined with 400 Alpha damage and NO aimtime. That's not a common combination.
I've always liked all of the Centurions for historical and technical reasons and I like the hill sniping playstyle so I've always been prepared to put up their weaknesses. The 7/1 has recently seen huge buffs but it's still over-specialized and curiously still centered on a stillborn gamemechanic (the HESH rounds).
Centurions weaknesses amplify each other and limit it's ability to bring it's strengths into play while the Patton's strengths make it's weaknesses into minor annoyances.
1 Tip: If you like the M46 Patton and plan on keeping it, then buy yourself a Thunderbolt. It's cheap and that Brothers in Arms crew does wonders on the M48A5. IThe M48's soft stats are so good that with BiA and Vents you can drop the Vertical Stabilizers. Not that there's to much use for that free slot unless you like having 550 meter viewrange but it might give you an edge.
Have you played the amx30 and how do they compare, i have the amx 30 and i Love it. But to me the m46 just seems worse apart from aim time and a bit of Gun depression

I hadn't played it in so long. I played through it over the winter on EU. I did not remember the tank being as bad as it it. WG needs to give it some love. It was fun when I ground through it on NA years ago. It's so bad in this meta. Great games!

I just found this old video (love your videos BTW) but I have to say that the "study" you quoted from Reddit is not valid unless the exact same maps were played on both accounts and from the same spawn, same enemy team make up, etc. as different maps, different spawns and different team make up will change how you have to play (maybe less arty-safe for example). I 'm not saying that XVM focus isn't real but I don't think it's as prolific as this "study" makes it look. Thanks as always for the great content.

Awesome work again. Showing bottom tier game play along with just shooting nothing but AP ammo and having no pay to win rounds loaded. Proves it to people that players can actually play without having to shoot pay to win ammo. But still to this day there is way to many gold rounds being shot for no reason in witch is showing people don't have the skill to aim for weak spots like you can taugrim. But great game play and good work like always. Oh and arty shooting a bottom tier tank when there is more dangerous tanks then a pershing damn XVM using trash players. But that was some damn F@&king good game play the last video.

Yea I agree.
Premium ammo is a tool, but an over-reliance on it can skill-cap a player negatively.
People fire gold ammo instead of learning weak spots or getting easy flanking shots on targets.
M46 is my highest tiered 3 marked tank and it is a beast. You will enjoy it.
I'm very impressed by your video's, especially because you use a lot of bottom tier battles to show how to play the tanks and still be able to influence the outcome for the better. What I like the most is that you usually don't use any premium rounds. This shows real skill in outplaying people and think of good strategies. This is what I love about the game and it's sad that a lot of players just press "2" and win. I love the challenge to outplay others, even though I know I will never reach unicum level. That's not a problem for me =)
I made a new account and went first for this line, though tier 5-8 I don't like. Your video's have helped me to get a better look at them and perform better now. I bought T20 today and actually wanted to try to 3-mark it, but I went to get the Pershing as soon as possible to be able to play it in the Frontline mode.

I'm a HUGE advocate for vision control, especially Optics in all mediums and lights.
Vision control = 1st Shot Advantage (1SA).
1SA is one of the most powerful concepts in the game.
Thnx for advice friend. I use them in all my lights for sure, will try them on on a few of the meds I play most and see how it goes (will forego ventilation).
I would say, coated optics is a must in everything that is not meant to camp except blind heavies or TDs (is3). If you have heavy tank with turret that can take a hit from TD, use coated optics just for spotting TDs, it may help to you, it may help to your allies. Maybe there's an exception: if you have crazy view range (e.g. 485m with optics on M46 Patton with 5 skill crew), you can possibly swap optics for vents and cola, which reduces view range to something above 470m, but it boosts gun stats and agility. This is expensive setup, but you may have better feeling from playing that tank.
I haven't seen any recent Panther 2 reviews. That thing is the middle child of a Panther and an E 50: no armor, huge as fuck, and has a gun that tends to behave on its own.
Another indication that it's hard to play or flat out sucks is that you don't see it that often in battles.
I'd really like to see how you play it cause, currently, I struggle a bit with it :)
That story about arty targeting unicums seems pretty weird. I believe that not everyone uses XVM (I stopped like year and half ago) and that arty targets only unicums. When I play arty I'm usually targetting my favorite positions which, I believe, are strong and then I'm targeting tanks flanking my allies or tanks at weird angles, that are in annoying positions. Those are likely green or better players. When I used XVM i choosed unicums just when there were two players close to each other, but never tried to chase them everywhere on the map.

I don't focus people *because* they are Unicums. I fire on the most easy or the most dangerous targets. I don't tunnel them like an obsessed, bitter moron. As a matter of fact, in many battles I make it a point to kill the non-Unicums because they're easier targets, strip away the enemy Unicums' pubbie meatshields, then kill the Unicums.
I don't use XVM. I've never used a single mod. I was probably at a meaningful disadvantage doing so, but WG has added many of the best features from mods to the game client: last spotted location, view/render circles, hit log.
1. I was focusing their top-tier players who were providing spotting and sniping our tanks from hill.
2. They were the only viable targets in that situation.
3. Every time I fired at them, they could fire back. This is not the case with arty when they are far away

I don't use XVM, I think it's bad for the game as it clearly represents an unfair advantage over those who don't use it. I do however use those optional signs that show progression through the campaign etc as a target prioritiser when I'm in arty. The hate doesn't bother me, I didn't make the game or create the arty missions.

It's not the player's fault there's in-battle access to stats - that's on the WG for allowing that to happen. Same goes for the existence of arty.
I'm struggling with Pershing too at the moment. So much so, I'm considering not continuing the line. Is the patton worth it?

when driving arty, i just shoot whatever is available. i mostly target squishy tanks with dangerous guns and support the flank that is more likely to fall. only when i have several available targets i sometimes go for the highest wn8.

I just got the Pershing I loved it for one game which is my first game after that I hated it and it's going to be a slow long grind especially coming off in the t20 literally completing that tank in the day I'm really liking the t20
This is a little discouraging. I just started playing in December , the xmas event was running when i started. I'm working my way up the American medium tank line and just got the T-20 yesterday , i was hoping the Pershing would be better than your preview shows.
The M46 Patton is a very good tank, it's worth grinding through the Pershing.
@@taugrim I put an all female crew in the t20 and i am grinding up in it now. I need 60k more exp in T20 to get Pershing , by the time i get that grind done my Fem crew should have nice skills for the Patton.I have another 100% crew in E2 Jumbo and just unlocked T29 last night , i have never been in T29 so i don't know if i want to move up to it right away or sit in the Jumbo and grind more exp in it before going to the heavy. So far the Jumbo is my favorite , it's noob forgiving.
i got penned by obj 430U in my turret with AP shells and I no longer play it any more.
I am merely green and I swear I sometimes get focused by arty. There have been too many times when I’ve been bottom tier on a team full of red and orange players, and I find myself getting clicked instead of another tank near me that’s a tier or two higher, and seemingly also exposed.
M26 was the most frustrating tank on my way to the pattons...
T20 is great, the M46 is greate, the Jumbo (M4A3E2) and M4 are fun to play but this M26 was just pain. I used all my free exp to pass it...

Solid review of the tank Taug, I know we both had nearly 100% the same opinion on the tank while grinding it. I hated it. I am currently taking a tiny break from the game and not playing near as much, I will be on a bit to play a few games every once in a while for a mission or what ever. Msg me in game if you are gunna be on at a specific time and we can try to toon some t9s when you buy the m46 patton. I will work on making enough credits to buy mine. Or we can play w/e tier I am always good for anything.
I tried to like the M26 Pershing. I failed miserably. Here's to hoping the M46 Patton is meaningfully better. Or even just better.
I have to hope when the m46 has max upgrades it will be a better tank to play. Reason being t9 is far kinder in MM than t8 and at least the turret looks like it will try to work more often. But need to play it before I can say really.
M46 is really powerful thanks to the gun. It's also more mobile + the turret can bounce quite well especially when using the nice gun depression. It's so much more enjoyable for me than M26.
T46 is way better than the Pershing and the T48 is also good.
The main point is that XVM is a toxic app.

But arty is very toxic too.
The combination of the two is utterly toxic.

High penetration & high alpha damage is just really toxic in late game stages where you often find yourself in low hp tanks needing to drive up to TD which are often Full HP and will have the first shot advantage
which arty is easily to deal with end game (Except the situations you get auto-aimed and clicked)

Maybe you could apply this to the English mediums weak bodies strong turrets. I am currently going down that line. Hopefully xvm is still a thing as arty will NEVER shoot me. :)

Hey Taugrim, not sure if you even read these comments anymore, but i like your videos and they make sense, was wondering if you or anyone reading these can help me out, im trying hard to learn "ridgeline" combat, please tell me if im doing it wrong...if the hill im climbing up and once i almost crest over it..what i do is i go into sniper mode...put my turret ALL the way down (m26) and inch up slowly until i can see the ridgeline is at level with the bottom of my reticle...if that makes any sense..is this the correct move with the m26, to just only expose my turret..but idk what im doing wrong because im getting hit all the time on my hull or lower glacius...when i zoom out of sniper mode...i can clearly see my tank hull is not exposed...its so frustrating when trying to learn to only expose your tank...and also in this ridgeline fighting do you use sniper mode? or autolock on...and as soon as you seen green you fire...thanks! keep up the good work!
You realize you were commenting on getting focused by arty simply because you are purple, while YOU are focusing the enemy tanks because they are purple? XVM targeting is good tactical sense... It's a thing because XVM is visible in game. It doesn't mean you're a bad player or cheating, it means you are smart and using ALL the tools available to you.

I like playing arty and I use xvm but I never went for one player just because he was a unicum. I use it to know how shity my team is xD
I want to comment on that reddit thread. Did he play on his uni account first? If yes to make it accurate he should do that again but reverse the order because otherwise we can't be sure if getting targeted by arty while in an arty experiment didn't make him more cautious the more he played.

The Pershing has always been the low point of the US medium tank line since the tier 10 mediums were introduced. The Soviet T-44 is just better, while still underwhelming, when compared to the Centurion or STA-1. And on the Patton you get one of the worst grinds in the game. The 105mm requires the highest amount of exp in the game to unlock... even though the gun is rather mediocre in everything except dpm. And remember how in the past you also had to research the top gun on the M48, a tier 10 tank. Wargaming doesn't really line the US medium line.

I have made through many unpopular tanks just fine, including stuffs like T-34-2 or Chi-Ri. Black Prince, on the other hand, is a total garbage. It has low alpha, low DPM (lower than Churchill VII) and low pen gun. Armor is laughable against same/higher tier, it can't even sidescrap properly. As slow as T-95. Has no gun depression.
Your best play is literally limited to 'rushing' same tier heavy tanks so that they can't peek a boo at you, and taking/baiting fire for your allies that have better gun so you can win games. At bottom tier, you literally only can shoot whoever that have mercy at you and show their soft sides and use HP as your only armor.
Get 100k freeXP even for money. I rather spend time at work than by grinding some tanks (Black Prince, TVP and stock Sturer Emil) for weekend or two. There are tanks that I hate, but some of them are too much. Tier 9 conqueror is my favorite heavy tank together with T10.
Make a tactical roll. Always works

In blitz this thing has the most painful stock grind.
Same thing in the Blitz version. Sold it, going back to Russian meds.
