Many years back, the 60s, I was a kid and she was very new on the met radio broadcast, I thought that she was the best singer that I had ever heard, still the best singer that i have ever heard.
An absolutely gorgeous rendition. I saw Marilyn Horne in concert in London, back in 1992. After her entrance, she apologised in advance for any uncharacteristic sounds, as she was under the weather, then went on to give a stunning performance. Fabulous singer! ❤
I remember the Saturday Metropolitan Opera matinee performance of SAMSON ET DALILA with Horne and Jon vickers as Samson in the late 70's. It was absolutely stunning the way they interacted, especially in the Mon Coeur...to the end of Act 2. I have never heard anything like that performance before or since. Such POWERFUL voices. Wish they had recorded the opera together.
I don't like the way she sounds in this. This is a seducing song, the dark timbre is unlikely to have such an effect on most men. Also , too breathy, no legato in "ah, réponds à ma tendresse ". Legato is crucial here, for the whole impression of this aria is of a serpent that hypnotises the pray while getting all around it. She sounds like an old lady, not somebody you fall in love with.
Absollute perfection. Diction, Tempo. Impeccable French. And moreover no hanging which shows how good the orchestration is. Awesome concert performance. Garanca is the follow up, but I am sure she listened to Miss Horne. who understood Saint Saens.
It is amazing how this anglophone singer can sound french so well!!.. she does not 'spit' the D and T like so many English or American singers do.. and she does not diphtong the vowels! I can undestand any single word!!.. the interpretation is also so sensual!!.. She really does it perfectly!.. bravo Mrs Horne..
Marilyn Horne is now, & forever will be, my favorite mezzo soprano. Her voice has no breaks in it, which is why she goes from low, to middle, to high registers so effortly. Very few singers can do that.
Holy crp! How on earth did she get her voice to project like that??? I was an opera singer for many years ( mezzo) and never could achieve this! Wow. The placement is so forward and perfect.
HAPPY 81st BIRTHDAY, Marylin Horne!!!! Thank you for the many, many wonderful hours of listening that you have given me! Your inimitable, lovely voice will stay in my musical memory forever! GOD BLESS YOU!
One of the most elegant performances of one of the most sublime arias in all of operatic and song literature! Marilyn Horne has a well-trained voice of exquisite luster and brilliant musicianship. Brava! Brravissima! to her! Few voices can match her unrivaled vocal resplendence! ~Dr. James Myron Holland, D.B.S., Ph.D.
Yes, few voices can match her unrivaled resplendence. One that certainly trumps her performance is that of Olga Borodina. Best ever! ~Prof.Dr.Dr.Jens Pflug, M.A.M., PhD (2x)
I first found Ms Horne during the interact of Der Fledermaus...She, along with Pavarotti and Sutherland performed during the break...They received a standing ovation by both the audience and the orchestra...Marilyn sang Mon coeur of which I didn't understand a word, but the emotional response was deep within my soul and the tears that followed were a liquid pleasure...
Such a great artist of bel canto. Her voice sounds seamless. She always has head voice, even in her lowest pitches. She, Pavoratti and Dame Southerland were great together. Bravo!
Marry Flynn - She is one of the few along with Jessye Norman who makes the octave leap at the end, so effortlessly. Her voice, her acting, just transporting. Bravissima Mme. Horne.
Nobody......nobody comes close to the rich sound she projected in her music. In all ranges. Truly was the best. I still haven't heard a singer that matches her tone quality and vocal control.
Interesting to read the opinions. Glad I do not read them before listening to the aria or Marilyn Home. Love this! Beauty is in the eyes and ears of the beholder.
Why? Has she gone somewhere that I don't know about. She is still quite active teaching. As a matter of fact I spoke to her a little over a week ago and we shared a few laughs as we always do. Thank goodness she is still with us, hasn't gone to join her good friend Joan Sutherland in the Heavenly Choir!
She is really a lovely singer. I did not know about her existence, (shame on me) until I found her singing duet with Montserrat Cabballe. I love them both and keep listening over and over again.
There are only TWO people here that I've heard LIVE. And Both of them were CLASS ACTS!! One is Marilyn Horne singing Wiesedonk Lieder with the GREAT CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA ( ranked 7th in the world by British Grammophone) and the second best was!! the legendary Christa Ludiwig, who gave a concert back when the MET was on strike in the 80's Wiesendonk lieder but was so CLASSY when the audience applauded mid-stream, she demurely jestured "Not yet"!! A total CLASS ACT I will never forget!!!

I agree.

This rendition of a mezzo soprano singing is the most beautiful sound ever to flow through my ears one word FANTASTIC
Listen to Obraztsova and Borodina - the references for this aria. Voices are fuller and richer. Can't get any better.
Jessye Norman did a rendition too ppl.
Does have the power of a prayer, but performer a seductress set on betrayal ... Is the tantalising irony
One of the greatest singers of the 20th century!!
how utterly intoxicating is her lower register and how gracefully she goes in and out of it--it seems effortless. what a dame.
Indeed,magicial.
A voice that blooms like the prettiest flower that ever lived.
A voice, technique and presence that comes along once a century.
A voice that we get only once a century. Stunning.
I heard her sing this in a concert 39 years. It was amazing, sumptuous and utterly unforgettable. NO one else sings it like this! Magnificent.
I agree. This matches the contours of her voice like none other.
Elena Cernei

+rascasse 2Marseille also the liaisons are correct listen at 3:22. so clear and yet so beautifully interpreted.
Mime artist
She is fantastic - great voice - great interpretation. Great singer.
Love her singing.
The most marvelous instrument ever. I have always idolized her, and this rendition of this aria is simply amazing. What a voice!
Every note is exquisitely beautiful.
There will never be a voice like Marilyn Horne's. I was lucky enough to see her twice live in concert. She always gives me goosebumps.
One of my favorite arias sung by one of the greatest mezzo's of all times. I just lkove marilyn Horne.
Simply the best. Vocal perfection in every phrase
Marilyn Horne is now, & forever will be, my favorite mezzo soprano. Her voice has no breaks in it, which is why she goes from low, to middle, to high registers so effortly. Very few singers can do that.
Her middle voice is IMPECCABLE. It takes a lot of training and practice to achieve such a unified vocal calibration. Her tone is so creamy here!
I saw her sing this live back in 1997 in recital in my hometown and she captivated the audience before she even sang one note. Class act all the way/
One of my favorite arias and Miss Horne owns it.
Chills!
Holy crp! How on earth did she get her voice to project like that??? I was an opera singer for many years ( mezzo) and never could achieve this! Wow. The placement is so forward and perfect.
Very moving and poignant. No one else like Marilyn Horne.

Who the hell cares about you and your mere qualifications. Not me. Go away James.

Exceptional in every way! This Lady is a legend!
Her vocal gifts are extraordinary and have blessed up now for over half a century!

Gorgeous voice...incredible sound.
I felt like I was floating in a cloud of happiness and rainbows. That was so beautiful!!!
Such a great artist of bel canto. Her voice sounds seamless. She always has head voice, even in her lowest pitches. She, Pavoratti and Dame Southerland were great together. Bravo!
An example of how hard work and dedication can lead to perfection.
Beautiful...
I saw her the last time she was in Chicago. I love this woman and I wish for just a kiss and a hug from my shero!
Extraordinaria ejecución. Me produce una gran emoción. Gracias, Marilyn.
Gorgeous clarinet solo at 2:56 :))))
Love the violinist behind her, passionately hitting his one note every 3 measures. lol
i wish you hadn't pointed that out. now i'm memorized by it.
Me too lol....I can only see him now lol
@@guyritchie7504 I think you ‘d like to say “ mesmerize “, instead of “ memorize”. Am I right?
Exquisite, magnificent.I'm astonished how good she sings inFrench.Every word is understandable.
A divine, exquisite voice and certainly one of the most beautiful women to have graced the stage of opera.
Marry Flynn - She is one of the few along with Jessye Norman who makes the octave leap at the end, so effortlessly. Her voice, her acting, just transporting. Bravissima Mme. Horne.
Where it comes to things like, I can barely say anything other than Thank You!... Oh such greatness...Thank You!...
Bravissima, Madame Horne!!
No one have sing this aria like Miss Horne.
Elina Garanca is better..sorry !
Arnaldo Ramirez Ricardo jessye norman is better and garanca
No. Best rendition comes from Olga Borodina. Unmatched. That said the other protagonists are all good, but Borodina stands out.
OMG! I just have to say, she looks absolutely lovely in that gown.
Nobody......nobody comes close to the rich sound she projected in her music. In all ranges. Truly was the best. I still haven't heard a singer that matches her tone quality and vocal control.
Wonderful. I was lucky to hear her and Sutherland in concert many years ago in London, many happy memories..
Soft and tender. Lovely timbre. But Jessye Norman's version is absolutely overwhelming and truly spine-chilling
superb! a national treasure
lover her, the voice is so unique and powerful.
Interesting to read the opinions. Glad I do not read them before listening to the aria or Marilyn Home. Love this! Beauty is in the eyes and ears of the beholder.

Precioso, hermosísima voz !!!!
What singer today has Marilyn Horne's incredible discipline, the key to her artistry.
MARAVILLOSA!
A great voice and a special lady.
Fantastic!
simply the best!

The best of the best....Thanks for posting X
What a consummate performance, a deep connection to French diction is also exhibited here.
Just beautiful.
I love her legato!
There was nobody like her! I still miss her.

Eline Garanca
@@AZERTY22600 are you Garanca's uncle?
My favourite mezzo aria and who better to sing it than Marilyn Horne.Splendid. It almost makes me want to get a haircut!
Wow che meraviglia di suoni
Wonderful rendition
Beautiful voice ! Thank you so much :)
This is quality!!
This afternoon I heard this aria sung very nicely in a MET HD broadcast. But no one sings it as well as Marilyn Horne.
She is really a lovely singer. I did not know about her existence, (shame on me) until I found her singing duet with Montserrat Cabballe. I love them both and keep listening over and over again.
la numero uno...............................sin duda...................
Superb performance.
I'm completely in love...
