i really wish they had more romantic moments together in the anime and manga. most of it was action which of course i don't mind but would love seeing more of kenshin's perspective on how kaoru was important to him. or would have been great to see that last arc from the manga where he thought kaoru 'dies' and ends up in a total depression state.
This didn't need to be said or shown, though, RK pulls in the male audience through action, political plot, historical plot and the female audience through the romantic version of the plot... In romantic terms, he is pornography for female audience members with all the "i'll protect you" stuff! Him being a blank slate pretty much in terms of personality and all of his motives not totally explored is also a theme of such stories... because it allows the women to "put themselves in Kaoru's position" a lot more where they do NOT know what is going on inside his mind - her story is the archetypal "follow the man on the edge of good and evil and bring him back" aka taming him. anything we do learn about him is used to further the plot and further develop the character giving him more dimension, but it does not account for his love for Kaoru, all we know there is that he comes to do so - It's a weird choice for Watsuki, who wrote this for a boy's magazine, but I think his wife who is also called Kaoru had a lot to do with this particular choice and I think a lot of this was ran past her as well as his editor. That being said, this is one of my favourite shows and I am male, simply because it is (along with stuff like Hikaru No Go) one of those where story, characters, music and visuals are all designed with emotion in mind. One where you believe the fantasy is real - Whilst that is not romantic in the slightest, it is a huge emotional journey about a teacher, a pupil and youth, moreso than RK where the Yahiko / Kenshin dynamic is weak at best.
I do agree considering its more towards the male audience side. It still brings in the story on how kenshin overcomes who he was before and realize he has to live for the people he loves and protects and not just die for them. And even if a fair share of romance is shows their actions do tell a lot in terms of the feelings and importance they have for each other. Though it would have been great to continue that last arc in the manga into anime cause that would have been epic. Lol instead of those fillers episodes that was rest of the anime series.
Yes, you're right. It really is a case of show and interpret rather than tell because that's what people want from such a story, rather than telling the viewer everything that is going on. The fillers weren't too bad, really. They were extremely silly and supernatural which was probably the worst element of them, since they had the right ingredients to be solid stories in themselves. "Superhealing plant" and "Man who thinks he is god with supreme pulled from nothing blindness magic" didn't rub a lot of people the right way because of how irrelevant both things were to the story and themes told in RK. A major dynamic of RK as a show is Kaoru bringing Kenshin back from the edge, but in both of those stories she acted as a supportive role and never did this again, this gave the fights far less meaning and weight and made them feel totally disappointing. Watching or reading her say "do be careful" is much different from "I need you to retain your humanity + do be careful" However some of the characters were interesting and would fit into the normal show quite nicely. Ninja girl leader woman, Not sure if doing good knight guy, Sano's church woman and so on and soforth. If these fillers were shorter, they may have had a much better impact. Note: the reason I don't consider Jinei's freezy-pop powers unbelievable is based on the concept that fear is an actual thing, whereas making someone blind with a lightning strike and throwing them off a cliff is not. And I'm willing to accept "feats of strength" such as magical sword ground shoving, getting buff from looking at a blade, super punches that break anything and Sojiro's happy feet as possible since they are mere exaggerations of the norm or reflections upon other tropes in similar genres created to bypass action or reduce the amount of fight sequence necessary to tell a scene (rather than drawing the closing of distance, long range attack).
Royal Free i definetly think so as well. I thought the fillers weren't bad too but i felt it didnt feel as impactful as the battle in kyoto with everyone like with kenshin dealing with his former self and kaoru trying to stop him from returning that way if they had more of that it would have been interesting to see. Like i overall enjoyed all the action but the major plotlines of kenshin's journey in the show felt slowly out of place. The music though especially made the show awesome and worthwhile
The music took a downturn too I think in the later filler. Welcome to my Nightmare, Dancing Madly Backwards and Typhoon for example; they do not paint the picture that Departure, Misao's theme, The Other side of Murderous Intent and Elegy of Massacre did. Sure, they're atmospheric but feel extremely generic and lack some of the key motifs that drew people to the show in the first place, for all of these reasons, it feels very un-RK-like rather than RK-like or something we'd expect from it. And I suppose this is why fans of the show feel let down. A part of me would love to see the show animated by a studio other than DEEN, but seeing what they did with Trust & Betrayal (the first OVAs) I don't really think this is necessary. Though the epilepsy sword fights, are they necessary?
Such a beautiful piece from a beautiful anime... it really fits Kaoru's character! I can't help but well up when I hear this music as her tears mirrored my own *sigh*
My mom was the person that introduced me to this anime, after watching 10 episodes I was obsessed thank u mom

This anime isn't just pure gold, it's the entire El Dorado.
