I love how all those old school weird tales are telegraphing sooo hard that you can guess the ending 10 minutes in yet you can't help but love to listen to them regardless.
A more modern story would have a twist: The servant planted the pipe there and laced it with a drug that made him prone to suggestion. He placed the dirt on his feet and in his bed. He suggested the grisly nightmares that he had each night. Lastly, he had the protagonist write him into the will in case of an untimely death.... I like the story as is.
Oh come on!! I thought myself so smart for coming up with this idea! Also, that the narrator is the son of the officer who had put the killer away but had been so troubled by what he'd seen he'd left his pregnant wife, so the son never knew his father. Or maybe the boy saw the father's file with gruesome photos accidentally when very young, was young enough to forget seeing them but the memories kind of resurfaced as a result of suggestion. Maybe he even bought the house following "a strange premonition, like I've been here before", to convince the reader further it's him. The manservant must be this fanatically devoted kind, the likes of Mrs . Danvers I "Rebecca"...
...The manservant brought in the first hand, the manservant could have been raising the master from sleep disguised as the killer, hence the dreams. All the while he was planning to do what had been done to his original master. And there could also be some racism and social commentary thrown in, like, the murdered women are gypsies, immigrants, girls of questionable morals etc, while the master and his servant are uptight arrogant old school England...
@@andnowtheweather2948 Not true. If you take a meta perspective, the stories being told are usually a past event that is related. Typically the narrator is a key part of the events and from the start is already aware of the resolution since it has already transpired by the time we find out about it. I would say it's rare that the story is being told concurrent to the events happening. With Lovecrafts work for example, we often are getting the events from a diary or a letter explaining to whoever the details behind some mystery. I think the op's statement is valid. We as the reader may feel like the narrator knows less than us but that is only sometimes the case.

@@Paul_305 I find myself unable to enjoy English blends as much as I did last year. That Latakia seems to really irritate my mouth which is a shame because I do enjoy it. Been smoking Westminster on and off lately because it is so mild, but I miss my nightcap.
@@AdamStJamesStJames COVID totally changed the flavor of English for me. The smokey spiciness has turned to something soapy. It's a real shame. I hope I'm able to get a taste for it again one day.

This was an amazing story. It was suspenseful. I enjoyed it, especially because my father had a meerschaum pipe. Excellent narration. Thank you. Have a wonderful day ❤️🤗🌟
Absolutely love this. All the benefits of an M.R. James story but with a bit more edge and violence--still classier than a bit of pulp but teetering on the edge of exploitation. Great stuff and I'm glad to have found a new author to track down more from!
Yep…..it is a balmy night in Brighton. Gonna sit outside my house in the park and watch the circling bats, Peterson system standard heritage pipe packed with some cherry vanilla aromatic, ear buds in. Bliss.
Love this story every time I hear it! I love pipes and good tobacco, and I am always drawn to stories with them. Fantastic story and narration! I have heard this before and could not pass up another chance to listen to it. Thanks!
I kinda liked the concept of the main character realising early on what's happening to them, but I wish that was explored more. What if they went to the police with their journal, talking of vivid dreams that match up with the crimes? Surely, an actual, purposeful murderer wouldn't expose themselves like that. What about telling your servant to lock you in? Trying to control the sleepwalking? Trying to draw the spirit out of yourself in some way? Idk, I always find it weird when people in these stories notice "huh, it seems I'm murdering people in my sleep" and then they just accept that and consign themselves to their fate.
Meerschaum Pipes were a product of Italy using Turkish clay. But they got so successful the Turks cut the clay exports so they could make their own Meerschaum Pipes. Warren would know. If he wasn’t dead.
Please enjoy today's Warrenism. The scene is set in a partially lit alley near the local convenient store. We zoom in on a figure talking into a phone and overhear: "Dude, you won't believe what just happened. There I was. Fresh bowl billowing. Presently, I felt a tap on my shoulder and heard "puff, puff, pass" from the stygian shadows to my right. It was none other than Warren. In the flesh. As I grasped for my voice, I reflexively handed the opal meerchaum over to him. With much effort, he cached out the bowl in a single hit. Then he held the hit in for near 3 minutes and when he exhaled, I swear I could see a disturbing underground scene amidst the royaling blue smoke. After a tick he returned the empty pipe and said "you fool. This bowl is dead!" Well needless to say I grabbed the implement and quickly fled. Didn't even tap out the ash. I just pocketed the meerchaum without a word and took flight. Luckily, the trees were quite potent so I was able to forget the horror I just witnessed after a short duration. I write this as a word of advice, always pass left or suffer the consequences for your actions. You never know just who might be eyeing your smoke with covetous intentions. Really bummed me out man."
Yes. Some English pronunciations steadfastly refuse to adhere to their European origin. When I was growing up they used to call Nestlé "Nestle" on TV adverts.

This is one of those rare stories where you know more than the narrator and are wondering when he will catch on.
Rare? It's like that every single time in old stories :)

I have a meerschaum featuring the head of Dionysus and some grapes. It colored in very nice with only occasional smoking.
I have many meers, and had to smoke the hell out of them for them to color. Aside from my claw that is, but I cheated with that one. 😊
Thanks again Ian

There's a slight glitch in the audio at 4.26 after the word "maniac".
Thanks, David, but that's just the way I read the line! There's a slight chuckle in there -- a bit of characterisation.
Great story once again. I'm a bit confused why you pronounce "meerschaum" as "meerschoom"? Is that common in English?
Yes. Some English pronunciations steadfastly refuse to adhere to their European origin. When I was growing up they used to call Nestlé "Nestle" on TV adverts.

It's ok if not used to overpower a blend. I can't stand Va/Pers for that reason. It's like adding too much salt to your steak.
