    My husband passed away from aggressive brain cancer almost 3 weeks ago. We have 4 little girls, and a baby boy. Listening to this made me cry because all the points were spot on, and it feels. Like a confirmation that we lived as God wanted us too. I'm absolutely broken. I don't know how to move forward from here. We were supposed to grow old together, and be married for over 50 years. Not enter our 30's, with only 11 years of marriage.
    He was an amazing husband and father. He was everything I asked God for, and so much more. We had an incredible marriage, and never understood why people would say, "marriage is hard". For us, it wasn't, it was so easy. It didn't get hard until the tumors took over our entire lives, and finally claimed his life. People who married after us would call us up frustrated with their own marriages, because it wasn't like our example of marriage. We accidentally set unrealistic expectations. I didn't know it was possible to love someone so much. Sadly that love came with an unbearable price me.
    My oldest daughter can't wait for the church retreat this June, that is being held in Denver. She is really hoping she will get to meet you! Since her dad got sick, she has leaned on the church. But since his passing, church and anything related to church, is what's keeping her going.

    My wife and I got married by the court first, for reasons I really don’t want to go into. In order to still receive the Eucharist we lived a Joseph and Mary type marriage. My pastor asked us when we were going to get married by the church and we explained our situation that even though we got married outside the church we didn’t want to consummate the marriage until we got married by the church. That was the first time we had heard this term of Joseph and Mary marriage.

      The Bible clearly states Jesus had brothers and sisters. Actually, according to the Bible, there was a COMMAND not to deprive one another of sex because Satan will tempt you. Mary and Joseph AFTER Jesus was born would have been sinning if they did not have intercourse. That is what a marriage is the two will become one flesh. 1 Cor 7:5 Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempts you not for your incontinency.

    The difficulty of accepting the sublime mystery of their spousal communion has led some, since the 2nd century, to think of Joseph as advanced in age and to consider him Mary's guardian more than her husband. It is instead a case of supposing that he was not an elderly man at the time, but that his interior perfection, the fruit of grace, led him to live his spousal relationship with Mary with virginal affection. -- John Paul II

    Father, with all due respect, this video is misleading. A couple can certainly be validly and sacramentally married in the eyes of the Church even if they have yet to consummate. Their marriage would be a marriage “ratum sed non consummatum,” ratified, but not consummated. The validity of the marriage is not at stake.
    There is an article on Canon Law Made Easy that explains this better than I can, but I don’t think one can say that without sex, there is no marriage if both parties freely consented to marriage in the Church but have been unable to consummate due to any circumstance. If the parties are baptized, it is a sacrament.
    Consummation is a right of marriage but not a requirement.

But they did have a UNIQUE circumstance that was never to be repeated again, namely that they were given the supreme blessing of providing a home into which the Son of God was to be born from the line of David. Never to be repeated again! Such an auspicious blessing called upon them both to make extraordinary sacrifices to uphold and honor that blessing, namely continance in marriage. It's like they had the best of both worlds: the best of marriage and the best of celibacy. And they got to raise the MESSIAH!!!!!

      It’s worth noting that some things are not required for sex to be considered sex; for example, penetration doesn’t need to be deep, ejaculation doesn’t need* to happen (*although it is not to be intentionally avoided), etc. So, just because a couple can’t do certain things due to complications such as vaginismus, dyspareunia, etc. doesn’t automatically mean that what they CAN do doesn’t count as sex. (That’s not to say that any two people - such as people of the same sex - can be married just because they are capable of doing something of a sexual nature, of course.)
      I don’t want to get into the nitty gritty details too much here, but I thought that may be helpful to bring up in case someone is in that sort of relatively common situation. :)

    Father Mike this is a two part question. If Blessed Mary and Joseph did not consecrate their marriage; where did Jesus' siblings come from if they exist?
    Marriage has four keys. Some are attracted to one or more. When someone has all four; the concescration is not as important. Connection on the highest level; spiritual is more satisfying. I was in a relationship where we connected only with two keys and there was a tremendous amount of tension. I, therefore, would love all four keys and intimacy directed in other ways.

      A widower could and would have been in a good position to negotiate a marriage with a young girl. He would have a home and a livelihood well established and be able to start a new family. At the time girls were given in marriage anywhere frome 12 to 17 years of age; 13-15 was average. As a professor of mine once put it, if they bleed, they breed. Many men were widowed and took subsequent wives because death in childbirth was very, very, very common for women.

      don't be deceived into these doctrines. Although they're pleasing to your ears, the RCC is NOT the way to Christ. Study the scriptures and see the truth for itself. You'll see the RCC is contradictory to all Yeshua has taught.
      In fact we can trace back the Roman Catholic religion right to its birth (note i am not referring to the Catholic/Christian church before its was made legal in Rome)
      Rome was attacking the true followers of Christ, their persecution was terrible and they were being killed without hesitation. Yet the followers of Yeshua kept growing in spite of this genocide. In 300ad Constantine converted to "Christian" and made the roman state religion Christian. This however never stopped pagan Rome. Instead of Christianity taking over pagan Rome, pagan Rome adapted Christianity into itself. The Roman Catholic Church is NOT the Body of Christ. Its a counterfeit Christianity with a false Christ and false apostles. The statues you bow down to and pray to for help and guidance aren't even who you think they are.
      We look back into history and pagan rome and after the "conversion" of Roman Emperor Constantine (its known he still worshipped the sun, hence why the day of worship was shifted to Sunday from Saturday((sabboth)) to adapt to his idolatry ) the temples of their pagna gods eventually were just re-skinned to fit the Christian look. this is where the Idol worship of the RCC came into, the statue Venus was eventually called "mother mary" and the statue Jupiter was changed to "Saint Peter" so on and so forth.
      Study the scriptures. Do NOT ask of any guidance or help from this supposed "holy family" only GOD is holy and we are made holy thru HIM. Youve been given a helper, a teacher who cannot lie, a power, a will, a new life thru the HOLY SPIRIT.
      repent from the RCC. it is a counterfeit christianity.

    Fr. Mike, respectfully, Canon 1061 and commentary says, "A valid marriage between two baptized persons which has not yet ben consummated is said to be 'ratified' (matrimonium ratum). Ratified marriages are always sacramental and enjoy the essential properties of unity and indissolubility."
    Further, this is addressed in the Summa Theologica, ST. Supp. Q42. A4. where consummation is not integral to the essence of matrimony.
    I'm not aware of any official documents of the Church that say that consummation is necessary for matrimony to be sacramental, even if consummation should generally happen as a moral principle.

  • @JohnR.T.B.
    @JohnR.T.B. 2 года назад +7

    I'm no theologian or try to contradict any Church doctrine that I may not be aware of, but I believe the human love of sexual embrace as consummation of marriage is still, even as it is the required sacramental fulfillment of marriage, lower in stature and nature compared with the love of God and one's love for God. Mary and Joseph were initially planning to live a normal married life under God, but God's divine plan of salvation was given to them through Mary, and that fulfillment outweighs marriage fulfillment by sexual embrace, because since then they were united by Jesus as father and mother, and Jesus is the highest fulfillment of love.
    The angel in Matthew's testimony makes it clear that Joseph took Mary as his wife, and as a father he was the one to name Jesus, Jesus. Perhaps the best explanation is that, God's one unique grace through Jesus for Mary and Joseph made their marriage a fulfilled marriage.
    "But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”"

    Father, can you address how this message applies to couples who due to medical conditions are not able to consummate their marriage. Unknowingly to them, some couples enter into Marriage and then after marriage realize that they are not able to have sex due to vaginismus in the female and/or erection disfunction in the male. I think it’s very insensitive to hear this message when I personally know Catholic couples who have not been able to consummate their marriage. What is the Church’s teaching on Josephite marriages? Or couples who are forced into Josephite marriages due to medical conditions?
    Unfortunately I feel like nobody in the Catholic Church addresses the issues of sexual dysfunctions in marriage. Namely Vaginismus… many religious woman struggle with this in marriage and the Church has very little support or resources on this topic.

    • @cadencehogge8528
      @cadencehogge8528 2 года назад +2

      Hi, I write for CatholicMatch and have done some deep research here that might help you :).
      If something like vaginismus or ED prevents a couple from consummation, but they didn't discover it until after the actual wedding ceremony, a couple usually has two choices. They can stick out the marriage and work toward consummation through proper medical treatment and therapy, and live as a Josephite couple until then. Or, the Catholic church sees "hesitation to consummate" or inability to consummate as a valid reason to annul the marriage--meaning that even when the condition is unknown to the couple until after the wedding, they can safely and without sin separate and receive an annulment from the Church authorities.
      Obviously any way you look at it, it's a difficult and painful situation! Hopefully this helps, God bless 💙

So, if one chooses not to have sexual intercourse because of whatever reasons, then it is just a choice for as long as they could be together until death do they part. I’d like to know why it’s always considered so much more holy to be a virgin than to be sexually active even in a Godly marriage. If there’s nothing wrong with sex that’s open to life in a christ centered marriage and it’s actually supposedly such a “good" thing, why would have mary, or most (not all) saints for that matter, not been considered as clean or as holy if they were to have lost their virginity? As if that implies theres something wrong or unclean about sex even when it’s in the right context

      Not every iota of the Gospel was written down, as the Bible itself says. St. Paul, talking about the Liturgy in 1Cor 11:34, wrote, "The other matters I will arrange when I come there" proving the Apostles never intended to write everything down. See 2Timothy2:2 and 2Thess2:15 for Apostolic instruction on holding tight to the traditions they taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter. Remember, the Bible was not compiled until the end of the 4th century, at the Council of Rome under Pope Damasus the first. So, it CANNOT be our sole rule of faith. The Church lived, spread, and conquered the Roman Empire before the Bible was compiled.

    I was excited to find this video, but then surprised when Fr. Mike didn't give a clear answer to the main question, if he answered it at all. In my teaching I've stressed the centrality of sexual union for marriage as well, especially that when a man and woman come together they become "one flesh," as Jesus emphasized for understanding marriage. With that I've been unsure what to think about Mary and Joseph, wondering if my (and the Church's) teaching is consistent. (And also when I taught this at a vestry meeting, a member of the vestry asked whether he and his wife were married, since they've never been able to consummate their marriage. Which was a zinger for me at that time.)
    At any rate, if Mary and Joseph are married because marriage is ratified at the vows, even before it's consummated in the marriage bed (which apparently makes "Josephite" marriages possible) why can't it be said that the elderly couple who are unable to come together are in a ratified marriage but not a consummated marriage?
    The backdrop for my teaching was same-sex relationships and why two men or two women can't get married--that is, they can't become one flesh. That helps bring something out about proper marriage vows. When a bride and groom vow to live together in a certain way until they're parted by death, that is specifically talking about the one flesh union. So if one spouse has to live in a nursing home and the healthy spouse can't join the other, they aren't breaking their vows by being parted before death. Their one flesh union has yet to be ended since they're still alive, and so their obligations to keep their solemn vows hold. So I just thought that was interesting, that the vows themselves aim at the sexual embrace, even though the wording is a bit subtle (at least in my tradition).
    I like the chocolate chip cookie analogy, but, again, it makes it sound like that means Mary and Joseph weren't really married. Maybe a short follow-up could clarify this.

    • @joostine3720
      @joostine3720 2 года назад

      i’m confused by you saying he didn’t answer the question at all. he clearly stated they were married through vows but because they never had sex it simply was not a sacramental marriage

    • @stephencrawford5452
      @stephencrawford5452 2 года назад

      @@joostine3720 Your reply suggests that Fr. Mike is only talking about sacramental marriage when he makes the comparison with chocolate chip cookies. There may be a few phrases in support of that, but it's certainly not clear. It seems that his remarks are applicable to all marriage, whether Holy Matrimony or Civil Matrimony. That is, he does not seem to be arguing that sexual union is more strictly essential for the sacrament than it is for marriage as such.
      Further, the crucial distinction for Mary and Joseph is that their marriage is ratified but not consummated. True, they were not in a sacramental marriage. However, the main reason for that is not that sex is essential for sacramental marriage in a way that is not the case for the normal human practice of marriage. The reason Mary and Joseph are not in a sacramental marriage is because Jesus had not yet instituted the Seven Sacraments. They are still married, though. And the reason they are married is that their marriage is ratified, though not consummated.
      Fr. Mike brings up that distinction specifically in the case of "Josephite Marriages," where he says that specifically the sacrament is ratified, though not consummated. But then in the next breath, he says that a couple who has entered the sacrament of marriage but is physically unable to consummate their marriage has not received a sacrament. More than that, they aren't married at all, sacramentally or otherwise. Against your take, the language of sacrament basically drops out. He ends with strong statements to the effect that without the sexual embrace there is no marriage.
      I think these points bring out that there is something incoherent in the finished product that is this video. His final comments are put so strongly that they seem to undermine Mary and Joseph's marriage. At the same time, the explanation he gives for Mary and Joseph's marriage does not fit with his claim at the end--which he even addresses to the couple that can't have sex, telling them they aren't really married!
      We might imagine an analogy between receiving the Eucharist and the extraordinary grace found in merely Spiritual Communion. The desire for the sacrament can in some cases be the occasion when the Lord imparts the grace of the sacrament. Just so in the ratified marriage of an elderly couple, who is unable to consummate their marriage. Again, their vows aim at the sexual embrace. They have committed themselves to the form of life that is consonant with being made one flesh with another person. They will conduct themselves in a certain manner until they are "parted by death." Further, couples in those circumstances can (and often should) pray for healing. That alone underscores his point that sex in marriage is itself a means of grace. The Lord would be so delighted to bless couples in their marriage bed, that they would be freed to enjoy one another and be molded into the likeness of Christ through all of the difficulties and delights of cleaving to their beloved.

      Jesus’ brothers are mentioned in several Bible verses. Matthew 12:46, Luke 8:19, and Mark 3:31 say that Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see Him. The Bible tells us that Jesus had four brothers: James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas (Matthew 13:55). The Bible also tells us that Jesus had sisters, but they are not named or numbered (Matthew 13:56). In John 7:1-10, His brothers go on to the festival while Jesus stays behind. In Acts 1:14, His brothers and mother are described as praying with the disciples. Galatians 1:19 mentions that James was Jesus’ brother. The most natural conclusion of these passages is to interpret that Jesus had actual blood half-siblings.
      Some Roman Catholics claim that these “brothers” were actually Jesus’ cousins. However, in each instance, the specific Greek word for “brother” is used. While the word can refer to other relatives, its normal and literal meaning is a physical brother. There was a Greek word for “cousin,” and it was not used. Further, if they were Jesus’ cousins, why would they so often be described as being with Mary, Jesus’ mother? There is nothing in the context of His mother and brothers coming to see Him that even hints that they were anyone other than His literal, blood-related, half-brothers.
      A second Roman Catholic argument is that Jesus’ brothers and sisters were the children of Joseph from a previous marriage. An entire theory of Joseph’s being significantly older than Mary, having been previously married, having multiple children, and then being widowed before marrying Mary is invented without any biblical basis. The problem with this is that the Bible does not even hint that Joseph was married or had children before he married Mary. If Joseph had at least six children before he married Mary, why are they not mentioned in Joseph and Mary’s trip to Bethlehem (Luke 2:4-7) or their trip to Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15) or their trip back to Nazareth (Matthew 2:20-23)?
      There is no biblical reason to believe that these siblings are anything other than the actual children of Joseph and Mary. Those who oppose the idea that Jesus had half-brothers and half-sisters do so, not from a reading of Scripture, but from a preconceived concept of the perpetual virginity of Mary, which is itself clearly unbiblical: “But he (Joseph) had no union with her (Mary) until she gave birth to a son. And he gave Him the name Jesus” (Matthew 1:25). Jesus had half-siblings, half-brothers and half-sisters, who were the children of Joseph and Mary. That is the clear and unambiguous teaching of God’s Word.

    God instituted marriage between man and woman it also has to be civilly recognized within society. In days past marriages were arranged between the man the suitor and the woman's father or next male kin. Therefore marriages are civil contracts the exchange of vows before a witness finalizes the contract. As for civil divorce the marriage is no longer recognized by society but of course civil matters mean nothing to God which is what Jesus was saying about civil divorce. Therefore marriage is more than just a civil contract.
    As for the consummation between the man and woman in order for the marriage to be recognized this is false. If the man and woman agree in abstaining from having sexual relations the marriage is still valid. It's only in a matter that one of the spouses want to have sexual relations but the other doesn't the validity of the marriage could be challenged.
    St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary were married and their marriage was civilly recognized as well as recognized by God. They both entering into the marriage agreed to abstain from sexual relations so their marriage remained valid.

I am absolutely open for correction and hope maybe one of the commenters might have additional insight for me. To me, I didn’t read anything biblical about Mary and Joseph NOT consummating their marriage once Jesus was born nor do I see how Mary being a Virgin at Christ’s birth translates into them never ever consummating their marriage. A point I’m not sure was clearly expressed here regarding total impotence - marriage and the sexual act are fundamentally oriented toward procreation and raising a family. Marriage and the sexual act can still be oriented toward procreation even if conception does not seem possible (Abraham and Sarah are a good example of this). But if the sexual act is anatomically impossible, then the marriage cannot be oriented toward procreation (if the impotency can be treated/alleviated medically then this would not necessarily be a barrier).
    This is where the chocolate chips come in - if the chocolate chips are missing, the baking can’t really be oriented toward making chocolate chip cookies. The ability to engage in the sexual act is not an arbitrary requirement for marriage, it is rooted in natural law.

    On one side, nowadays there is an increased number of "Catholic" women educated in the culture of "sex is always a sin, including in marriage" and on every Catholic video abording the issue of sexuality in Catholicism and sexuality in the Catholic marriage, they always say "I want a sexless marriage, like the Mary and Joseph. I will never accept sex in my marriage".
    On the other side, the large majority of "Catholic" women use sex as a commodity in marriages, exchanging sex for their husband's money, not as a loving embrace of the holy marriage with their husbands.
    I really hope and wish this Father's Mike video finally debunks the deviated use of sex "Catholic" women make in their lives.

    Why do you think that Mary and Joseph never consummated their marriage? In Matthew 1:25 it says that Joseph knew Mary not UNTIL Mary was delivered and the child was named. Later in Matthew 13:55 and again in Mark 6:3 it talks about Jesus having brothers and sisters within the context of "How can this guy have all of this wisdom and all these gifts? He comes from a family with father and mother, sisters and brothers just like anyone else." These seem to indicate that the marriage remained unconsummated only until after Jesus' birth.

      The Greek word for until doesn’t imply something happens after like it does in English. There’s no good English equivalent. I’ve heard many languages, such as Spanish, don’t include until in that verse. It’s a poor English translation that leads to so much confusion here.
      And the word brothers or sisters doesn’t mean blood relatives. It was also used for cousins or close friends, such as the Apostles. I personally think that is what it is most likely referring to.

      When Jesus called Mary "Woman" it is a title of honor.
      Jesus had no biological brothers.
      Under old culture and history, anyone under that side of House of David's line, any cousins, like John, would have been callef brothers, since there was no word for cousin.
      I imagine Scott Hhan has covered both questions.

      Hi, I write for CatholicMatch and have done some research on this topic I hope can help :).
      Losing the ability to consummate a marriage well into a marriage --even just after the first time entering the sexual embrace--does not nullify the Sacrament. In order for it to be a Sacramental marriage, the spouses have to be able to consummate--not a certain number of times or lifelong, just the ability to do so at least once to "complete" the Sacrament. If a couple is able to do so but chooses not to, that gets into the Josephite marriage territory.

Like you mentioned that Joseph and Mary weren’t sacramentally married in the way we do it today because it didn’t exist back then.
    Is it possible to have a fruitful (Josephite?) marriage without intercourse through the power of adoption? Starting a family through adoption while never consummating the marriage?

    Mary and Joseph's marriage was most likely arranged by Mary's father. She would have had no say in the matter whatsoever. I never understood why Joseph is often considered the role model for fathers and even masculinity. To be frank, most men aren't going to relate to the idea of marrying a woman and never being able to have sex with her. And Joseph stepped up and did the step-father thing admirably, but he couldn't have any kids with Mary. How do you think that looks to the average man, especially if he's not a hardcore Catholic?

    • @tmfj171
      @tmfj171 15 дней назад

      I get what you’re saying, but Joseph is a role model in many ways. Obedience to God and a leader and protector of his family. In regard to virginity, he sees that Mary is called to it and gives himself and his desires up for his wife. Though most men aren’t called to that specific love, it is something we can admire and apply to our own lives. Like you said, no man today would consider never sleeping with his wife (and neither would most women) but men can recognize that if their wife needs something that requires sacrifice on his part, he should give himself for her.
