this is EXACTLY what i meant about not saying what the monsters are. cause now everyone's like 'wtf were those?' its an added dimension and suspense to the game when the characters don't know what exactly they are fighting
Am I the only one that had an English teacher awesome enough to show this episode of "The Twilight Zone"? THIS IS TOTALLY AN EPISODE OF IT! (with evil zombies instead of aliens)
EPisode 28 and 29 have been so Lovecraftian, it's ridiculous! Last episode felt like A Shadow over Innsmouth and this episode brings serious The Picture in the House vibes around to me.
It's more of a style choice (not that that's super helpful to a brand new player). Start with the Player's Handbook. As a standard guide: 2/2.5e (what Neal started with) has some ambiguities, but is pretty light and easy to work with as long as you don't mind judgment calls in some gray areas 3/3.5 is expansive and has lore and minute details exploding across a huge library of books 4e is very much combat-focused from what I hear. It takes a lot of crap for being "D&D the video game"
Third edition is a great place to start, the player's handbook being the most essential book to start playing if you want to put some money into it. 3.5 is better but more expensive.
My going theory since it's a cookbook on how to serve humans would be that it might be written in Ogre, Orc, or Goblin. They don't have a really established culture, but they have their own languages.
Have you ever played the Baldurs Gate or NeverWinter Nights games? Baldursgate is second edition DnD and NeverWinter is the third edition, and NWN 2 is 3.5. There are a few modifications to the rules tho, but if you played either of the game series then you know a bit about the rules and differences.
You make a good point, still wouldn't the next logical choice be either Elven or even Dwarven? I mean it's obvious Neal has it for atmosphere, plot, or a false lead.
Well everyone in D&D would automatically know common (unless they were illiterate like Abi and the inn-keep), so the fact that the book isn't in common or the two other most frequently used languages (in my experience): dwarven and elven, makes the book very suspicious. Other creatures haven't come up enough for me to think Neal would use them, such as halfling, or gnome. My guess is that it's a real obscure language from a plain, or has to do with those evil creatures at the mansion.
I remember when I first watched rollplay and thought " oh, this seems to be a nice show to watch occasionally when I feel a crave for dnd" .Nope. Crack level addiction commencing.
Geoff behaves like a little snot nose child. Last week he was pouty and angry for the most part of the last segment because for once JP cut him off when he was making fun of Gen. There hasn't been a week he doesn't make fun, talk down or interrupt Gen and when it finally happens to him thats how he reacts...
D.D Hamburger It really isn't. If you actually analyze the way he talks, behaves and reacts throughout the entire season you undoubtedly get to the conclusion it isn't just teasing.
cacho100uva Naah, if he really had something against her roleplaying he would talk to her off stream, this is just teasing for the show to create a reaction and funny moments in the video for us.
Well, I'm watching Rollplay Solum now and the beginning of its first episode validates my analyses and clarifies that it actually is not all teasing. I'm not saying he has something against her and that it is all meant to belittle her, and in fact I believe most of it is actually teasing, but still a lot of it comes from his bully type personality and from his actual annoyance and frustration and, at times, disrespect towards her, her awkwardness and her role play. Sometimes I exasperate as much as Geoff at some of her ideas and in game actions or dialogues but there are better ways to deal with it.
Yeah checking for stuff is really dumb... Oh wait no it isn't considering in Misscliks which is set in the same universe they found trap doors etc before. People need to stop hating on Gen for perfectly reasonable actions.
Unfortunately for us -- no. The more I see of it in action with MissCliks and One Shots, the more I hope he's eventually going to push far enough away from D&D to call it his own system and start talking to publishers.
There was a hunk of animal meat in the cellar last week, so they basically confirmed it wasn't people.
"To Serve Man" is a 1962 episode of the television series The Twilight Zone. Season 3, Episode 24
this is EXACTLY what i meant about not saying what the monsters are. cause now everyone's like 'wtf were those?' its an added dimension and suspense to the game when the characters don't know what exactly they are fighting
Bregor has the best secret backstory in history.
he was cursed to drop the base.
Neal is so Awesome, litteraly dressing as a black sorcerer :D
Damn it Neal and your twilight zone references... "to serve man... It's a cookbook!"
JP caught a cold IRL because of all the rain last week. Brilliant method acting.

rainymood changes a lot while listening to this
Didn't even need the rainy mood site. Binge watched through this while there's a similar rain storm outside my house
IgnisSauros I know I reached this part of the season and it was storming for me too, creepy as hell.
I swear to god, I'm going to have nightmares from these past two weeks.
a book called 'to serve man' in a strange language, with pictures of pots, belonging to a creepy old dude.... this show has become a murder mystery.

This week was the best week for both Rollplay AND Dark Heresy

Props to JP for doing it with a bad cold.
I recommend the storm sound. Makes it better.
its a reference to an episode of the twilight zone from 1960...great show and good reference neal.
I fucking love all yall. Thanks JP. Thanks Neal for being goddamn awesome.
Neal is the ultimate DM ^^
Thanks for the upload, JP

Did enter the site (rainymood.com) and it made this even better!
same
The night is dark and full of terrors. And Neal.
seems like geoff had a bit of an attitude this episode
Last week the inn-keep said he was using the book to teach himself to read, so it should be in common.
Last week until I start watching live, hell yeah.
He was very careful NOT to say what kind of meat, all they know is it's "a chunk of meat, with a couple of flies buzzing 'round it"
And they're still going with the show on twitch :D
omg "how to server man" XD. I thought it was a butlers guide to serving vegetables... HA.
You make a good point, still wouldn't the next logical choice be either Elven or even Dwarven? I mean it's obvious Neal has it for atmosphere, plot, or a false lead.
"Oh boy! 23.59, time to go to slee- *Rollplay D&D updated* ...fuck"
btw guys they are still streaming right now
Oh god, Neal is so awesome! :D
Oh my god! Geoff is in the light!!
oh my god, did they just eat the "one shoots" party?
oh my god Neal!
So has no one thought about the stew from last episode? YOU'RE EATING PEOPLE!!!!!
Rainy mood totally helped this. XD
The video starts the intro ends and then i see Neal.... He ascended to a super DM.
The version they play is 2.5 but it's been heavily modified
Well I know it´s 2.5, but what do I have to buy the wiki page is a bit confusing...
or should I just start with the third ot forth edition?
Does Bregor have the ability to see in the dark because he's a ranger, or an elf? Because couldn't have Abi tried seeing in the dark?
None of them have read the short story To Serve Man? What are their age ranges, does anyone know roughly?
In Flames - Cloud Connected reference!
It's a cookbook. IT'S A COOKBOOK!!!!!
IN FLAMES we trust.
Well everyone in D&D would automatically know common (unless they were illiterate like Abi and the inn-keep), so the fact that the book isn't in common or the two other most frequently used languages (in my experience): dwarven and elven, makes the book very suspicious. Geoffs attitude left a really sour taste after last episode, hopefully he won't be such a emo git this week.
ohhhh you people who missed the start of the stream are gonna love this week. MuHaHaHaHa.....
Does anyone know what those monsters from last episode were? with the big smiles and shit?
I didn't notice that was even a thing =D Thats a good reason to disable comments though, it can get a bit petty here sometimes
This week. Holy shit guys.... this week.
To serve man... IT'S A COOK BOOK!!!! RUN!!!!!
Nice Twilight Zone Reference.
Does Neal have his custom 2.5 dnd rules posted anywhere?
where did you see that?
Why were the comments for the previous two episodes disabled? I don't think I saw anything spoilery
I remember when I first watched rollplay and thought " oh, this seems to be a nice show to watch occasionally when I feel a crave for dnd" .Nope. Crack level addiction commencing.
o neal, i heard the title and knew what was up
I think the vod on twitch is bugged, it won't load properly :S
it's funny how vincent was against trapping the innkeeper and now he makes fun of abigael and bregor for investigating
Ryan mentioned it.
Hey guys does anybody know what I need to play the same D&D version they play?
oh my neil, we love you
Thanks bro I think I´ll start with third editon :)
Neal is truly Dalamar now.
WTF is with Geoff? Trolling Gen once or twice is ok, but this is way too much
Geoff behaves like a little snot nose child. Last week he was pouty and angry for the most part of the last segment because for once JP cut him off when he was making fun of Gen. There hasn't been a week he doesn't make fun, talk down or interrupt Gen and when it finally happens to him thats how he reacts...

Why were comments disabled last video?
Because Geoff was visibly mopey/angry in the video, and JP didn't want a bunch of comments crapping on him.
Well I´m a bit too young for both games, the only game I´ve played from that era is Fallout1&2
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. That's a.. pentapost? Good job man
I watched most of the Vod he wakes up also his dog was sick so his mind was somewhere else.
Well he did say they couldn't tell what it was...
he didn't want people talking about Geoff's attitude
Neal looks awsome
Right after JP gave him shit for messing with Abigael he ended up in a super pissy mood. I guess he's not used to getting messed with.
Shhhhweeet, nice job!
AAARRRGH I thought it was 8 PM!
LOL, Twilight Zone call back!
Well, Vincent is cannibal now.
Timothy "Shindigs Stew" Young, most likely.
god damnit geoff, now people will start calling him Kneel instead of neal and neil.
The stew.....oh god...
Yeah checking for stuff is really dumb... Oh wait no it isn't considering in Misscliks which is set in the same universe they found trap doors etc before. People need to stop hating on Gen for perfectly reasonable actions.
Subbed to JP on twitch, still have to watch it on youtube because twitch is fucking ridiculous with it's vods.
i got the in flames refference great music... yay i understood something :D... im pathetic
omg up at NINE?! that's SO early how can you live!!!!!
Unfortunately for us -- no. The more I see of it in action with MissCliks and One Shots, the more I hope he's eventually going to push far enough away from D&D to call it his own system and start talking to publishers.
Twilight Zone reference ahoy!
Yeah, totally a cookbook ;)
Twilight zone reference ftw
If you would have actually finished watching the video instead of stopping in the middle to post spoilers, you would have seen that they address that.
FUCK YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Emphasis on the 'yeah'
Noticeable that Geoff is still in a bad mood
Epic!!!!!!
Very true.
Geoff doesn't look like a morning person... anyone else getting that vibe?
I get the feeling that Geoff is starting to lose interest in this.
OR, their horses!
fuck yeah geoff is an in flames fan
