রানিগঞ্জ আসানসোলের কয়লাখনি অঞ্চলটি প্রায় আড়াইশো বছরের পুরনো। খনিসংলগ্ন গ্রামের পথে ঘোরাঘুরি করলে নজরে পড়ে কয়লা পরিবহণের দু’রকম ব্যবস্থা। প্রথমটা বড় বড় আধুনিক ডাম্পার, কয়লা নিয়ে চলেছে রেল ইয়ার্ডের দিকে। দ্বিতীয়টি হল, যেন প্রাগৈতিহাসিক ভাঙাচোরা কিছু নারীপুরুষ ততোধিক ভাঙাচোরা সাইকেলে বিরাট কয়লার চাঁই নিয়ে ধুঁকতে ধুঁকতে চলেছে একটি বিশেষ গন্তব্যে, যাকে বলে ‘কাঁটা’।
নিয়ম হল, খোলামুখ খনির কাজ শেষ হয়ে গেলে মাটি ভর্তি করে জমি পূর্বাবস্থায় ফিরিয়ে দিতে হবে। তবে অমরা একটিও উদাহরণ খুঁজে পাইনি।

This coal mine or block belongs to Birbhum coalfield area. There are about 2102 million tonnes of coal reserves in Deucha Panchami coal block. This coal mine is the second-largest coal mine or coal block in the World and the largest in India, due to the amount of coal reserves. It is the newest coal mine in West Bengal.
