  • Thank you all who viewed my first video! I didn't expect to have all the views the way it did. Thank you for subscribing, also. This truck has over 370k in mileage and counting. Hopefully, I can keep this car running till 500k. Fingers and toes crossed :)
    Regarding this new video, I never thought i would be able to change my own alternator. I've always gone to the shop to get things like this repaired or replaced. The battery light came on one day but would disappear when i accelerate above 20mph. It would light up again when i slowed down or stopped at a light. I checked the battery with a meter and it registered at 11v and even as low as 8v. I thought i needed a new battery since I've had it for a while already, so i purchased a new one, like an idiot lol. Needless to say, the light came back on after a few miles driving. After alot of research, Alternator replacement keeps coming up. So, now here's my try on it. This took me 2 days to do since i have to deal with camera battery charging and placement of the camera and purchasing the right socket for the adjustment and stuck bolts. After all of this, I think you can do this job for 1 to 3 hours. Like the first video, I've done a few mistakes on this one too. I wished i could have marked the placement of the alternator before loosening the Tensioner, as you'll see in the video. I had to rely on my own judgement of whether the belt was tight enough (that's scary). Also, I was all over the place with removing the connections and bots and nuts. You might notice some inconsistencies with the video. I had to put the sequence in the right order so it'll be easier when removing parts the way i think makes more sense now that I've done it. Overall, i hope this helps!
    Again, thank you for watching!
    Only if you want to get the same part i got, here is the exact alternator I purchased:
    amzn.to/2WWUPCl
    Also, if your bolt is stuck, here is a link for the spray i used. I tried 2 different other sprays but this one was the one that worked. I bought mine from home depot for only $3. This link should just help you with the description of the spray. If you buy this from other stores i think it's cheaper. Use this link below for description only.
    amzn.to/2RyrDkk
    Good Luck everyone and Thank you again for all your support.
    Disclaimer: Please use proper safety precautions always and proper tools. Your problem might be different from mine so please also do your own research.
    Disclosure: I may earn a small commission for my link to any products or services from this website. Your purchase will help support my continuous effort to bring my experience and hopefully empower other common person like me to do for themselves too.

    One comment regarding your note at 14:04 about the alternator not fitting per the bushing sticking out. You're correct that it can be moved (rather than filed down) -- it can be done by using a bolt/nut and a socket to move it out of the way...kind of hard to describe, but you can search on RUclips to see others posts on this.

      Thanks Eric Bradford! I was disappointed to find out my cell battery died while I was doing that important part. I didn't want to undo what I've done. With my luck, i would've broken something else :) I was happy that it did move through and I didn't want to mess with it :) Thanks again Eric

    Thank you so much for the video. I'm motivated to change the alternator for 2000 4runner 4WD, which I recently bought. Do you suggest any other alternator which can actually fit correctly without filing? Also, my car's mileage is pathetic, do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

    • @4runnergirl190
      @4runnergirl190  2 года назад

      Thanks Tam ar! Yes, you can do this! Congratulations on your recently bought 4runner. These 4runners run a long time and I'm so grateful to still have mine running (knock on wood). So, if you get the oem alternators for your replacement, you shouldn't need to adjust the fit. You shouldn't, but just in case it doesn't fit, it's an easy fix as the video shows. Buy your part directly from Toyota dealers if you want peace of mind too.
      So, I'm guessing you're referring to gas per mileage right 😀. Well, I'm not sure about that one. How many miles do you get for a full tank? Thanks again Tam ar and stay safe!

    • @4runnergirl190
      @4runnergirl190  Год назад +1

      It's still holding up, although i think i may have to change it to an original Toyota part in the next year or so. The other day, there was hesitation when I started her up. Not sure if it's this aftermarket part but it's in the back of my mind. The Amazon part was a good patch up for about 3-4 years and on a budget. I'm thinking of changing to the original Toyota part if the hesitation keeps happening. In the meantime, it's still going! Thanks C F! Let us know how yours went!

      @@4runnergirl190 Hi there! I installed the same alternator as you. Initially there was a strange smell and weird whining sound but the sound went away after about a minute. The smell ( almost electrical/paint smell?) went away 4-5 minutes later.
      Now 3 days later and minimal driving, the alternator is very quiet and seems to be working great.
      - When I measure voltage at the battery with engine running it is about 13.1 volts. This seems low to me and doesn't correspond to the paperwork that came with the new alternator. So I'm going to check volts at the alternator this weekend and do more troubleshooting.
      - Also just for monitoring purposes, I bought a cigarette lighter voltage meter from Amazon. So hopefully I'll have more warning before things get bad next time.

I was always been taught to never run the alternator after replacement until you bring your battery back to full charge with an external trickle charger first. This will reduce the surge that could damage circuit. But I’m sure millions has done it without problem. I was always cautious.

    Re: The 2nd wiring connector he removed (at 6:45). Mine absolutely refuses to be released. I sure wish he had said something about how to get it off.

      Hi Richard! You're not alone in this struggle. I had a hard time taking that piece out too that's why I left if for last 10:40. There's a little notch you need to press in 11:48. I used a pair of locking pliers to help me get it out. Hopefully, you're able to release it. Please let us know what you did so it will help out others too. Thanks Richard and good luck!

      Mine too, so I forced it off and the pigtail I'm supposed to plug into the alternator broke into pieces so now I'm stuck with three wires I cleaned up and stripped the ends I figured out where each wire hooks onto the three male ends on the alternator but with out that pigtail Wich I can't find unless ordered and I need my truck today how the hell do I grab onto those three male ends then attach each wire. I tried wire crimp things there's just not enough to grab and then the three are so close if u used alligator pins temporarily those would touch and short out the alternator. I'm fucked if I do and fucked if I don't
      Help I need my truck and I'minutes away fr throwing a hammer through the glass window
