- FISHPONDS STATION WAS OPENED ON 1ST APRIL 1866 ON THE BRISTOL AND GLOUCESTER RAILWAY. THE LINE ORIGINALLY OPENED TO TRAFFIC 22 YEARS EARLIER ON 8TH JULY 1844. THE STATION WAS ORIGINALLY NAMED STAPLETON. THE NAME WAS CHANGED TO FISHPONDS ON 1ST JULY 1867. FROM THE BAY PLATFORM LOCAL TRAINS ONCE RAN TO CLIFTON DOWN VIA THE THIRTEEN ARCHES AT EASTVILLE. THE STATION CLOSED TO GOODS TRAFFIC ON 13TH DECEMBER 1965 AND TO PASSENGER TRAINS ON 7TH MARCH 1966. THE LINE WAS THEN CLOSED AND LIFTED AND BECAME PART OF THE BRISTOL TO BATH CYCLE TRACK.
How sad that we have lost, what would now be an important suburban railway, which would have helped to alleviate traffic congestion in Bristol.

Not far from where I live although the station got demolished the year after I was born. Great memories of playing around the area as a kid . Thanks for posting 👍

I remember waiting at this station with my Grandpa in the early 1950s to travel to Mangotsfield where he worked at Carsons chocolate factory. Great memories. Thanks for the pictures.

As an 11 year old in 1950 I used to go from here to Temple Meads for trainspotting heaven. Thanks for compiling such a historic collection of photos.
