This was some strange thinking by the deputy given the circumstances. If he thought it was going to be as dangerous as he seemed to think it was, with him hiding away from the door, why didn't he get backup to help him out? Sadly, his actions were the same thing we saw from an Arizona officer not that long ago, with the knocking and hiding and then shooting someone who answers the door with a gun because they are concerned for their own safety. You left out a contributing factor in the learned behavior: the Supreme Court. They have held that the police behavior leading up to the event isn’t a mitigating factor in whether or not the fear for an officer’s life is justified. Only the actions the very moments before count. So these cops can be trained that they can and should behave this way, and Supreme Court precedent protects them from any consequences.

It’s a sad situation and I do so wished it hadn’t have happened.
I believe the guy in the apartment did what a normal and reasonable person would have done in this situation being in fear for what was going on outside his door. • @charleslennonbaker

Thank you. I've noticed this is the first time in a very, very, very long time that LEOs of every stripe have gone on record and condemned the actions of the deputy and laid bare their feelings regardless of pushback and backlash. A comedian once said, "Yes, there are good and bad cops, but where are they when bad cops commit crimes?" Finally, we see a vocal shift to that narrative. Instead of talking heads Monday morning quarterbacking, we have on-duty and retired LEOs putting their foot down and calling BS on the current state of law enforcement. Something has got to change. I see myself in that young man. I can't count how often I've answered my door with my weapon. I'm also a person of color, so the apprehension and fear that something negative may go down if the individual at my door is a cop "just doing their job" and mistaking me for a criminal is always present.
The worst incident of me being profiled, with a cop ready to pull his service weapon on me, was at, of all places, a VA hospital. A disturbance call went out for VA cops to remove a disruptive veteran; the call gave the description and name of the vet. This was traspiriong outside the hospitol under a cookout veranda. About twenty vets were bar-b-queing, and one in their number was screening and yelling. I was about 100 feet away, reading a book and smoking a cigarette on a bench. When the cops arrived, they looked at the group and the disruptive vet and approached me. Both had their hands on their weapons and screamed for my ID. As the lead asked for the ID, the other one tried to flank me, but he had a death stare on his face. Before I did something they would regret, the person who called yelled, "He's not the one!" He then pointed to the vet in question and the lead cop walked over and kindly told the vet to calm down and leave. The other cop who tried to circle me still had his hand on his sidearm. The lead cop returned and said, "We're clear" on his radio. I thought it was over until the lead cop still asked for my ID. I calmly stood up, gathered my belongings, and walked to my POV without saying anything. The suspect was a caucasian man, 6'1, about 220lbs, in his late fifties, wearing dingy clothes, blue jeans, and a boonie hat. I was 5'7", 160lbs, 39 y/o, and was in a business suit. I've lived on three continents and have interacted with multiple law enforcement agencies from the Met, Polizei, Police Nationale, and RCMP when I was in the service. Our interactions have been solid on every occasion, whether professional or social. The only place where I have never been 'treated' as a citizen first is in my own country. But that's going to change, life's hard enough being cop, there is no reason to make it harder on everyone else.

This is similar to the 2 female officers who saw someone walking with a gun and IMMEDIATELY shot them.. I’m also not sure if this is true but I heard it’s the same department as officer acorn down. If so this town needs to greatly up their training and recruitment.

Regardless of whether the officer was justified in shooting, which it doesn’t seem like he was, this is exactly why it is stupid to answer the door with a gun *visibly* in your hand. I have always been aware of this, so it seems like common sense to me. Have a gun, sure. But it shouldn’t be visible, because it could be a cop on the other side of the door and he might shoot you. Whether that’s right or wrong, you still run that risk if you let that gun be visible before it should be.

It looks like you're touching on what I'm wondering. Wondering what the law clearly says or implies about opening your door while holding a gun. The problem is, however, that you'd be an equal "idiot" to open your door without one, in a possible dangerous situation.

    • @CutlassOutdoors
      @CutlassOutdoors 4 месяца назад

@@mikem.2078 I'm not saying he shouldn't have had a gun. Just that having it visible before knowing who was at the door was foolish for exactly this reason. I'm also not saying that meant the cop was justified. If he was worried about who was at the door, cracking the door and bracing it with his foot without giving the knocker full view of his body (and his gun) would have been a better way to approach the door. I'm just saying this from a standpoint of what is least likely to get you accidentally shot, not a legal standpoint.

Agree with most but I also think just because someone knocks on your door and hides doesn't create a dangerous situation, definitely not enough to answer the door with gun in hand. Also it's an apartment building with more people in transit the likelihood of someone knocking on the wrong door and then moving on is way higher than at a single home residence. When I lived in an apartment building, I used to get people knocking every few months who were at the wrong door. Especially when neighbors had a gathering. Now living at a single home residence in a big neighborhood I've never had someone knock on my door accidentally then move on. And if someone did I still wouldn't answer the door with a gun in hand. Or in hand in plain sight because a gun in hand in plain sight might cause the person on the other side of the door to act erratically

I 100% agree with your assessment of the reality what happened here. I would like people to consider “What If” What if the cop was actually a criminal trying to rob you 🤔
I ask this because so many people get shot by police while looking for what the citizen thinks is a “Bad Guy” on their property… Just saying don’t expose yourself, consider a ring doorbell, call the cops, feel free to arm yourself but seek a defense position instead of exposing yourself and hoping your fast enough to end the threat before it ends you…
If that cop was a bad guy and this man had a child in the house, dad is dead the bad guy now has more guns and the door is wide open…
Like I said it’s still a bad shoot but if the cop was what the victim thought he was (a criminal) he would still be the victim 😕 Regardless what the media says there are still more criminals than bad cops so act accordingly 👍

Gun owners bear a greater responsibility when it comes to dealing with cops. We need to consider how a gun complicates these situations. Anyone who carries needs to consider how to deal with being pulled over while armed. If you haven't considered the scenario that is the subject of this video, shame on you, hopefully you will now. You must also consider that if you need to use your weapon in self defense, especially in the case of defending others, you may be perceived as the threat by bystanders and the cops. There is additional risk and responsibility involved if you carry. Think about it.

The weapon was not pointed in the direction of the cop-it wasn't even raised, so a "police, drop your weapon" command prior to opening fire should be protocol. The airman's Constitutional and Civil Rights were stomped on by a trigger happy tyrant who jumped the gun and shot first before asking questions out of raw fear while de-escalation and fact-finding based on circumstances, environmental, common sense, rationality and decency took a back seat.

Another reason, people need to learn to stop calling cops to every situation they think a cop is needed. Most times, cops will make a situation worse than it needs to be or end up taking a life because they are so afraid. Some have no business being in law enforcement and need to find a new line of work.

To say there is little risk of being shot through a door when responding to a possible domestic call has to be the most ill-informed statement about policing that I have ever heard. There have been several times when one or more of those involved in a domestic fight have turned on the police, not to mention the times people have used domestic calls to ambush and kill officers. Only a complete idiot stands in front of a door to a possible hostile situation. Even soldiers in combat do not stand in front of a door that they are about to breach. As for the officer's attempt to declare himself, I agree he should have yelled "sheriff's office, open the door" each time that he knocked; but he did yell the declaration out loud. Maybe he should have repeatedly identified himself until the door was open. As for the shooting, the officer may have had time to hold his gun on the man and tell him to drop the weapon before shooting; but any Monday morning quarterback can say what they think should have been done. The video does have some audio where the young man in the apartment says "police" as if he possibly understood the officer's declaration. If he did, it was incredibly stupid of him to answer the door with a gun in his hand. I have seen too many body camera videos that show how quickly a suspect can pull a gun and kill an officer. Law enforcement officers see the very worst of humanity nearly every day; so, it is no wonder they are hyper alert when dealing with a potential violent situation. This situation is tragic for all those involved; but I would not be able to find the officer guilt based on the evidence provided at this time if I were on the jury.
I do believe that there are a small percentage of people in law enforcement that have no business in the profession; and this percentage is probably true for every vocation one could investigate. Since the Federal government is constitutionally charged with the defense and security of this nation, I believe Congress should provide enough funding to help every community's law enforcement department to require the most mentally and physically demanding training for new recruits. These academies would be run like the strictest of highway patrol academies are. To become a law enforcement officer, recruits would have to pass 12 weeks of intensive training in the law, driving techniques, high cardio marksmanship with various weapons, emergency medical treatment, various forms of physical fitness (e.g., running, swimming, maneuvering through obstacle courses), etc. They should also be required to pass intense psychological evaluations throughout the training weeks. Those, who do graduate to become fully fledged officers, must regularly train throughout their careers to remain on the force. Law officers will always patrol in pairs whether on foot, bikes, or in a car. This makes sure that every officer has immediate backup with him or her during every encounter. As one officer approaches a car, their partner covers him/her from the patrol car and is responsible for communications. During patrolling, one officer drives while the other one has charge of the computer and communications. These patrol partners are not permanent and must be rotated at regular intervals; so, officers can learn from and teach different officers in the department. All officers will be issues semiautomatic pistols, tactical whips, pepper spray, tasers, bullet proof vests & hand-held shields, 12-gauge tactical shotguns, and AR style semiautomatic rifles. The shotguns and rifles are to be stored in the patrol cars along with full medical kits, tools for auto repair, bullet proof helmets, and a gun for shooting a bola at fleeing suspects. The officers should also have the personal communication devices like the military uses; so, they don't have to deal with the clunky radios that they wear now. Officers should be well trained and equipped if they are going to be held to a higher standard than any other professional employee.
I don't have much trust in the Federal government and its agencies; but I do put more faith in my state government and especially in my local government. If by "bootlicker" you are referring to those who love Federal agencies, then I am with you. However, if you are referring to those who love and support the majority of local law enforcement officers, then I would have to say that I would rather be a "bootlicker" than the criminals' "asslicker."

Okay. Let me get this straight.
    01. Deputy Dum-as knock on the door in an aggressive manner then hides.
    02. Deputy Dum-as Does this again while CLAIMING to Sheriffs Office.
In other words, Officer Dum-as acted EXACTLY like a gang banger/home invader.
Christ, even in the 1980s USAF Law Enforcement, we were EXPLICITLY trained NOT to do this.
IMO: Since Deputy Dum-as refused to identify himself SrA Fortson:
    01. should not have opened the door.
    02. should have called 911 immediately to verify if a legitimate LEO was at the door.
Many RUclips lawyers are saying don't argue with the cops. Just obey and do what your told. But in this situation, my step 03 would be to take cover or escape (if possible) until a warrant is produced.
AFAIK, Cops CAN enter your home without a warrant if they believe a crime IS IN PROGRESS.
There was zero evidence of this.
The Sheriff is protecting his officer. F* the public!
BTW: Where's Comrade Joe in all this? One of HIS GI's is gunned down and the Feds aren't investigating?
    I am white, a veteran with 2 tours in AFG, pro-gun, pro-police, ANTI-STUPID.

That’s my biggest problem with this. It’s gonna be found as justified use of force because *that second* he believes a DV incident was happening… I don’t like it, but I think that’s what’s gonna happen.
My problem with it is that his own poor choices, his own bad cop’ping is what GOT him in that situation. The same way we can’t start a fight and then claim self defense, I don’t like the cops can follow bad, BAD leads… like you said, 4th party he said she said she said she said… yet that cop took that info as gospel?
Just because he feared for his life in that few seconds when the door opened, it feels like weight should be given to him putting himself there without reasonable cause. 🤦🏻‍♂️
Not to mention not announcing the first time, putting *himself* up against the rail with no escape, giving no commands re:the gun… all of it.
We’ve all seen cops NOT act in some circumstances because they KNOW they can’t take the word of a game of telephone where the witnesses are unknown, what they even saw or heard is unknown, and they didn’t even know for sure where they heard it. ALL of that can’t be ignored in finding his culpability.
