Atomic breath is the iconic Godzilla’s trademark power. Godzilla has this power since the original 1954 film. It has been used by every version of Toho’s Godzilla and of Monsterverse’s version. Atomic breath just evolved as the special effects evolved over the years.
Yep, the TriStar Godzilla (1998) is very different: it'a a mutated iguana whereas the previous incarnations of the character were prehistoric creatures.
And this is part of the explanation why this movie was a flop. One of the other explanations was that this Godzilla was just framed as an animal whereas in the previous versions he was a hero or a villain.

Also what is shown here is but a small sampling of Godzilla movies and even then I would not say that the head has gotten any smaller it has been all over the place in its relative size to the rest of his body.
The story of Godzilla 1998 is very interesting. Thanks to Mr Emmerich we learn that Godzilla was created after The French nuclear tests in French Polynesia! What happened to the original story?
The screenwriters of Godzilla 1998, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, decided to depart from the original storyline of Godzilla franchise. The original film’s message in 1954 was a metaphor for nuclear weapons and their real dangers especially after American nuclear tests conducted at the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. The filmmakers wanted to avoid confronting the American audience with such embarrassing truth. They chose another country to blame. The French. The anti-French sentiment in the US was particularly increasing in the late 90s.

There are two versions of this movie. The original Japanese version and the American version. “King Kong Vs. Godzilla” was released in the USA on the 26th of June in 1963 by Universal International and in Japan on the 11th of November in 1962 by Toho Studios.

Atomic breath is the iconic Godzilla’s trademark power. Godzilla has this power since the original 1954 film. It has been used by every version of Toho’s Godzilla and of Monsterverse’s version. Atomic breath just evolved as the special effects evolved over the years.

Yep, the TriStar Godzilla (1998) is very different: it'a a mutated iguana whereas the previous incarnations of the character were prehistoric creatures.
And this is part of the explanation why this movie was a flop. One of the other explanations was that this Godzilla was just framed as an animal whereas in the previous versions he was a hero or a villain.

Also what is shown here is but a small sampling of Godzilla movies and even then I would not say that the head has gotten any smaller it has been all over the place in its relative size to the rest of his body.

The screenwriters of Godzilla 1998, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, decided to depart from the original storyline of Godzilla franchise. The original film’s message in 1954 was a metaphor for nuclear weapons and their real dangers especially after American nuclear tests conducted at the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. The filmmakers wanted to avoid confronting the American audience with such embarrassing truth. They chose another country to blame. The French. The anti-French sentiment in the US was particularly increasing in the late 90s.
