- Black piste Balcons in Alpe d'Huez is notorious for being an icy mogul field. It never gets pisted so the moguls get worse and worse as time goes on. This is not a run I would normally choose to ride but alot of you guys have been asking for me to ride some really bad conditions. Moguls can actually be quite fun, when they are more uniform, or if the snow is soft or slushy, but sometimes its just a case of getting down them!
I talk you through how to ride moguls on a snowboard, and then analyse my riding, because it didn't all go completely to plan!

What's the worst run you've ever done? Let me know!
Got to be a narrow reasonably steep track unbashed red run mostly icy and some parts completely bald!
A nocturnal one. Full moon, spring. Like 6 years ago. A very very (I mean, very) steep channel called Ruau, in Peñalara mountain, Madrid. It wasn't cold that night because it was almost summer, but the snow was icy as hell, not at the entrance, but a few meters into the channel, it was marble. I managed to stop before the most steepest part, and I knew that I couldn't do it, because losing the edge was death. In front of me was a dark abyss because there were some clouds and the moon didn't shine so much. I got into panic. I couldn't move, and I shouted to my friends to not enter and I need them in the rocks at my right, because I was going to try to reach them and climb them. I couldn't sit down because my heel edge would slip, and I could barely dare to breath. It was really steep, so I only needed to put my ands on the ice while being standing up. In this position I started to go on my edge very slowly to the rocks, sweating by panic and trying to not lose the angle of my board. The rocks were like 20 meters at my side and I lasted about 15 minutes to reach them.
My friends helped me to climb back and we all walked back down the mountain to our cars. It was my scariest experience on a snowboard, despite a pair of scary moments with avalanches.
Fortunately, the next winter I had the best nocturnal of my life, pure winter, hip deep powder, soul freeriding slope with a gentle and fun channel below, and the moon shining like the sun.

Dude!! I've done this for years.. you are the 1st one to validate this approach..
Shitty conditions are the best "teachers" :D You learn to get better with unpredictable terrain and "surprises" on normal slopes. After such a run I often feel I got better on normal runs by two times :D

Great video! As a relatively new snowboarder (3 seasons in now)I've always found your videos very informative and helpful. I hope to someday develop my riding in the same style as yours (I just want to ride mostly, piste, powder and trees). I'm a big fan of the Warpig, and since you've also got one, it would be really cool to see you review other boards and get your input as to how it compares to the Warpig and whether it suits your riding style. Maybe next season?
Cheers Brian! I'm hopefully going to be able to try some more boards out next season, if my RUclips grows big enough some companies may send me out some demo boards to test! I am very intrigued to try the k2 party platter, it looks kind of similar to the Warpig on paper but I'm sure it has a very different feel. I'm always looking at new boards and whilst I love the Warpig I've been on it for 2 seasons now so I'm keen to try something new for next year, we'll see what comes out!

Yeah I'll probably make a video on that soon, as I'm stuck in my flat there's not much else I can do! But in the meantime I'm on the Ride Warpig 154, it's a short board with a wide waist. This means it's good for making quick turns, but also my big feet don't hang over the edge. I have union contact pro bindings who h are responsive yet give me good board feel. My boots are burton Imperials which have a middle of the road flex!
Just wanted to say that this was an incredibly helpful clip. I'm relatively new to boarding, and though I feel confident in relatively normal terrain, conditions in Ontario are almost always icy. I tend to tense up and forget what I'm doing when I hit an ice patch. Add in a mogul and I most certainly wipe out. This was really informative, and hopefully this will equip me with the information necessary in the future! Thanks!

Last season icy moguls just beat me up. This season I ride down-unweighted turns a lot and these moguls become more acceptable now.

Had this trouble few days ago.
The moguls on my local mountain are like Hong Kong egg waffles or bubble waffles. They are big and really close together, so there is no reprieve once you enter the run. I really have to practice much more on using your lever technique next season and try riding in moguls again next season. Thanks. Malcolm! Stay safe and healthy!

The best teachers can analyze their own mistakes. I think for me the biggest hump to get over with moguls was trying to turn in between them like a skiier, but that's really unreliable. Turning on top of them was game changing
Sometimes in Hakuba, Japan, I found myself alone with no choice but to go down a mogulled-out, icy, steep as heck run.
Yeah it definitely happens sometimes!
Take away message for me: change edge on top of mogul! Always fail to try to use the path as on skies. But this sounds familiar to me "...and as I switch back into my heel edge I must have been rushing the start of the turn I’m pushing my back leg out..." From chair lift I find myself saying "Doesn't look that bad, let's do it!" and into it "What a damn stupid idea, boy!" So often I've tried to concentrate on technique of turns but at second turn the latest I'm happy if I survive 🤣 Next try this season. Btw, I wonder how the two skiers have survived which can be seen down the piste in early part of the video and who you pass later on. Thx for this analyse and correction steps!

That was impressive control even with some skids. To even point the board to the fall line would be unthinkable to me in that terrain/conditions. I get some pretty 'bad' mogles with a decent steepnes in a certain spot at the end of the day and its always the most tiring, but man when you go through without falling it feels amazing, specially If you look back what you just over came. Btw did you get a mini heart attack at 5:32 because of the board jiggle? That looked really scary!
In the NE USA if you don't ride steep icy moguls you're stuck on cruisers. Love the terrain where most don't go.
I live and mostly ride in New England. That’s a typical, every day run for me!

First run of the season with my friends a few years back. We all decided to hit the backside of the mountain via a long smooth run, until that one buddy who wasnt listening decides to take a shortcut and we all followed, double black run, pure ICE.

So I'm currently at st anton and 90% of people are skiers, which means they created moguls everywhere on the mountain. I highly do not recommend st anton for snowboarders bc 70%+ of the mountain are moguls and flats. Other than that, I am having a fun time learning short turns here.

Do you have any advice for hitting sheets of ice. One time I went through a tunnel and it was just a large sheet of pure ice and I immediately spun out of control and slammed down. Thank You !!

Yeah, essentially, it's more that your legs suck up and absolute the mogul rather than jumping over it, but yes, same movements and weight shift!

I was very intrigued to buy DADA, beacause of your review, but there aren't many at all reviews for DADA on RUclips and the Internet, no matter the good promotion campaign for Amplid brand. Finally I went for Jones Aviator 2.0. In general I tottaly share your strategy to have a double ender snowboard covering the most variaety of cases you might meet on the mountain. Switch, ollies and improvign carving is what i am focusing on in this season.
Lastly the resort you riding at is very attractive to me and my family i beleive

The weight on the back feet is indeed not good yet I catch myself doing it when it gets steeper. (Not the best combo) ist difficult to get out of it (as I put weight on my back feet to straighten it so I'm standing even)
Great instructional videos. How’s the ride warpig ? What size do you ride? Weight? Height? Boot size?
Cheers, I'm 88kgs, 6 ft 1, and I ride the 154. If you check out my other videos I've done a full review on the board! The only thing I would say that isn't in the review is that the topsheet of the board delaminates really easily, they replaced my old one on warranty but the same thing is happening to the new one and they won't replace it. I haven't based it or anything, it just seems to happen after about 1 month. Boot size UK 11!

@@malcolmmoore I've heard about the top sheet issues. Would the k2 simple pleasures be more durable? Or would you still prefer the warpig?
@@rick2tube I haven't actually ridden the party platter yet, I think it's a similar ride but slightly softer, so better for jibbing around but perhaps not so strong at carving. I don't think the k2 would have any issues with the topsheet though I've ridden other k2 boards before and never had a problem, it's something to do with the specific topsheet for the Ride Warpig. Despite these problems I would happily stay on the Warpig though, it's a great board and I love it! I just don't like to recommend it too heavily knowing the topsheet issue.
@@malcolmmoore if the Warpig is still your daily driver despite the known topsheet issues, that's quite an endorsement for the board itself. FYI: According to Ride's product page, the Warpig actually does not have a topsheet... It's listed as "topless" as they found a way to incorporate the graphics directly without requiring a topsheet, which maybe the reason for the common delamination problem. Have you heard of the Superpig? Thoughts on that vs Warpig?

In the NE you'd get heckled for not pointing it and ripping it. "Rip it, don't slip it". These are our typical conditions. Definitely conditions you as a snowboarder if you do this every day.

Hey look, an average east coast US run. This is hardpack, not ice. Ice is smooth and glassy and requires full send. If you can still make turns, youre having a good time baby, sharpen them edges!

Awww poopsie! In other words, you really aren't that great a snowboarder if you don't relish that sort of technical challenge.
I guess not, but I do think think the majority of snowboarders prefer nice conditions. I always seem to hear them banging on about something called a powder, but hey, if this is your cup of tea, more power to ya!
