After watching this video I’m hopefully ing to catch a bucket of herring in British Columbia this year and try some different recipes including grilling, canning and smoking!
Not as popular these days as the Netherlands, but they have been eaten in the U.K for centuries. Old guy used sell them in pubs from a wicker basket alongside cockles, whelks, mussels, shrimps. I'd usually have a mixture with a coating of thousand island dressing. Great for soaking up alcohol after few beers.
I’ve been a few times to the Netherlands and have always loved your herring. Thanks for this interesting video. Come to New York and try some of the Jewish style herring, at places like Russ & Daughters from 100+ year old delicatessen. It’s cured in vinegar I believe. Another style I love is I think from Jewish/Russian traditions: schmalz herring. Cured in oil and very salty, it’s hard to find good schmalz here but it’s truly fantastic-just by itself with chopped onion on a bagel or simply eaten by itself. The salt is probably too much for some people but I truly love it
You must try the Egyptian style we call it renga it's made of mackerel or herring and we have a very salty fish like you mentioned and we called it melloha
I Love Herring, but, and this is a BIG but, only eat them from carts who are cleaning them a la minute. I refuse to eat from sellers who have big stainless steel containers where there are hundert or so laying there waiting. This means they have not been freshly cleaned, but somewhere in a factory (in Poland for instance) and the shipped. These get rancid, they do not have the fresh taste. I am happy to pay for it, but I want them freshly cleaned.
I’m 100% sure that somebody’s speaking Japanese in 1:47-1:52. It's not Dutch. Does anyone know why? It means “Welcome! We’re on sale, and the price is half, which is 100 yen!”.
Hello from Croatia....I enyoj several times in thath herring.....even bring some with airplaine here in Zagreb....reLy top, helthy, tasty snack...prefere it with onione....I have questione; is it possible there to finde traditionaly dried herring....not as I finde like dog/cat food....but traditionaly...only on a wind......Like coodfish from Norwey we traditionaly adore, here on south of the Europe....Thanks for any answer ore lead......All the best from here😊🍀👍
Zoran Kalina I’ve never seen dried herring ever here in New York (We have food from everywhere in the world here) But it sounds interesting. Dried herring is available in Croatia?
I Grew Up Eating Fried Salt Fish Herring (After my Mother Desalted the fish by Soaking it in Fresh water 2-3 times a day for 3 days). 😊 We Usually Ate them with Homemade Indian meal Cornbread. Although the Fish has Fine bones...THE TASTE OF THAT FISH IS ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! 😋 EVEN MY NEIGHBOR WANTED SOME! 👍😊👍
In my Neighborhood, during the Late 1970's...They Stopped Selling Salt Fish Herring (in Brine Barrels). Where Can you Buy Salt Fish Herring (in Brine)? 😊
Soured pickle isn't traditional. The onions where added when herring was older. A good quality new herring should be eaten without those attributes ruining it's taste!
Please stop leaving more comments about the Japanese language as no more are needed. Please share something insightful instead. Skansen from Finland makes the best spiced, pancreas matjes herring in glass jars, but it is very expensive. In the USA, you can find all kinds of herring in Polish/Russian delicatessens and grocery stores in the fish department. IKEA has the best pickled herring that has the right texture. Brands like ACME, Nathan's, Vita, etc. are mushy and unpleasant in texture. Blue Hill Bay is very good and is even sold at Costco for the best price! They even make Dutch matjes style herring with spices and the pancreas flavoring.
The Hollandse Nieuwe (Dutch New) are caught annually, from mid-May to July, and processed into Hollandse Nieuwe by Dutch companies according to a unique Dutch procedure. From this entire stock you can enjoy throughout the rest of the year. After September 30, we will no longer speak of Hollandse Nieuwe, but maatjes herring (buddy herring).

I sampled some herrings whilst visiting Amsterdam and loved them, as well as all the other Dutch street food.
It's truly delicious. Not too salty or vinegary, but just right.
It is wonderful. I plan on going back just for the Neuu Herring, in season.
The freezing takes care of the worms.
Sliced is called Amsterdam Style.
Suddenly around the 1:50 mark, Japanese just comes through. Where on earth did that come from!?
YUM!!!! OMG my mouth is watering now.
1:47 I hear Japanese in background!

the picle is only served in Amsterdam and is therefore not usual...
Pickle and Onion are there to mask the rancid flavour of sub-par fish
Thank you

Sarah Holmes. Hi Sarah, nowadays they are delivered frozen in plastic barrels, such as this one: www.eetvis.nl/haring-emmer-40-stuks-diepvries/
But I would so like to try the Dutch way
I really want to try this, but I can't afford to travel 😢
Can anyone tell me what it's like? Is it too fishy?
Yummie

I'm hearing Japanese words in the background. Dutch Sashimi?

I eat harring with soy sauce and korean hot vinegar sauce. It tastes gooood.

That was so random 😅
For me, shallots is more delicious to be eaten raw than onions.
I clean herring fast with scissors
❤
Scip the unions and pickles , they used them in the old days when the fish was not so fresh enymore for the taste .
It taste like the best ham you ever had. But it's not ham its not even pork, ITS FISH!
Haring is to Holland what sardines to Portugal. Love them both!!!
Never knew. Given my surname, i suppose I should have
Herring too. Trying to trace back to England “Herringe”, Nederlands “Haring” or Germany “Bismarck Hering”
