The reason why it is such a powerful song is that Edith Piaf wrote the lyrics and her friend wrote the melody you need to watch the original song by the author
She should have! 3 key changes, continuous belting, several different vocal inversions. Edith's version is hard to sing because of the emotion poured in. Patties is impossible. I know professional opera singers who wouldn't attempt this
Well, not my Favorite Aunty. (Aunty Genoa Keawe is mine)…but, this is a GREAT cover. I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s, and heard SEVERAL amazing Ms. Labelle’s tunes. And, I KNOW i don’t share this thought with many, but, I have her above Aretha.
I know we all love it when she attacks a vocal. But to see a - rare? - time like this, when she so gracefully carries the song rather than tears it to bits with that usual *amazing* force, is a real treat, too.

As a female vocalist, bass player and songwriter, I could not agree more. Each entertainer should be encouraged to put their own signature on any song they become enamored with, and drawn toward performing. Without individual interpretation, approach, chosen language and phrasing, variations would become limiting in expression and creativity.
When Aretha Franklin stepped in for Pavarotti in 1998, that was a brilliant performance, when I watch and listen to Patti performing this piece I believe it is amazing, the emotion and control, like taking you on a journey. Compliments to both singers🎤
I researched and read the other English translation is closer to the original French lyrics written by Edith Piaf, who also sings it in both French and English. It’s on RUclips as well. The incredible thing about this performance is how Mrs. Patti gets emotional in the midst of the song, that is what she is giving us the emotion you can feel it as if this tragedy happened to her, then she has to compose herself and belt out the rest of the song. Listening to this she put a hurtin on me. I was reduced to tears. Mrs Patti thank you for your incredible musical gifts what a privilege to listen to you sing!!!

I remember watching this on PBS several times. An emotional performance. Amazing!!!! I would tell anybody to go see this icon, legend, Queen in concert. Love Her!!!!
