  • Life At Sea In The Merchant Marine Aboard A Cargo Ship
    Dolphins love to surf the bow wave of ships and boats. Watch a pod of dolphins surfing a cargo ship off the coast of Florida. The bulbous bow that protrudes from the bow of the ship creates a pressure wave that dolphins love to ride. Filmed aboard the container ship Maersk Montana.

    OMG- dad spoke of this ALL the time. He believed they were guiding the ship and crew along a safe journey. I couldn't believe my eyes when I was watching the video. Thank you so much.

      I always make a habit of looking over the bow along the Florida coastline to see if the dolphins are surfing. I still love seeing it each and every time!

      @@BryanBoyle Dad was soooo superstitious,too. He used to say "when the dolphins swim near the bow it's good luck. You know they are sailors that died at sea wishing the crew a safe journey to their port o' call". Thank you Bryan. Keep up the excellent videos and be safe out there.

    Thank you for bringing back a wonderful memory.
    I was a merchant seaman in 1972-1973 on a 30,000 ton car/bulk carrier bringing Europenan cars (Mercedes/BMWs) to the US.
    I used to love putting my head through the bow fair lead and watching the Dolphins surf alongside the bulbous Bow.
    Your short video is magical.
    Keep them coming.

      Thanks! Glad it brought back a good memory for you. I love doing the same thing watching the dolphins surfing the bulbous bow. It’s neat watching them surf other ships passing by in the channel as well!

      I did that in Deck department in the Navy. I even watched a BM2 melt into a child at the sight of dolphins.

      The energy from the bow is pushing them forward, they’re enjoying the free ride 🐬

      Bryan Boyle , are you working on that ship constantly or do they move you about?

    • @BryanBoyle
      @BryanBoyle  3 года назад +1

      I move around ships. Everything in my union is contract based for junior officers. Each full contract is 120 days, but there are also relief job contracts ranging from 14 days to 77 days. This last job was a short coastwise 14 day job

    Really like this video, do you see a lot of sea life when sailing? How about whales? Great video, thank you.

    • @BryanBoyle

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed! I see a lot of dolphins as well as birds diving into the ocean to go fishing. We see the occasional whale as well usually during the right whale migratory season from November to April.

    Beautiful. I was doing that exact same thing years ago in the Navy, just looking over the bow and then all of a sudden this huge whale came up from underneath and was racing us. It was so cool. Wish we would of had video cameras like they have today back then to record such things. Or to see flying fish. That was also cool. Thanks for the video and the memories. :-)

    Does anyone know why they roll ~90 to 120° after some of the surfacings? And also why they swim with the ship at all? Is it an effeciency thing or just some form of playfulness?

    I have read about cargo ships accidentally killing whales and dolphins and them coming into port with dead sea creatures on their bows. Have you had this happen? Does it happen often? It's a sad reality it seems, but I'm curious how often you've seen this.

    • @BryanBoyle
      @BryanBoyle  2 года назад +1

      I have heard of this unfortunately happening, but have not seen it personally. We have speed restrictions during the right whale migratory season on the east coast where we cannot exceed 10 knots in certain areas. I’m not sure how effective the restrictions have been but glad to see there are efforts to help protect marine wild life!

    I always loved it when the dolphins surfed our bow wave. We also would pull a pretty good size wave on the beam that they also love to surf on or just ride on while we pulled them along. It was really cool at night where the only thing you'd see is the phosphorescence glowing around them. There are a couple good vids on RUclips of them surfing a submarine. lol
