Only 3% of corners taken in Europe’s top-five leagues resulted in a goal (between 2010-2020). That’s staggeringly low. Yet we all get so excited when our team is awarded a corner kick.
Hypothetically, what rule changes could be implemented to increase the chance of seeing a goal from a corner kick?

Even though it‘s true that there is a low conversion rate, one has to consider how many corners there are in a game. I don‘t know the exact numbers, but having 10 corners in a game isn‘t that uncommon. If we boost the effectiveness to just 10%, we‘d end up with a corner-goal every match… not saying that’s something we definitely don‘t want, but it would change the game quite a lot.
EDIT: in the Premier league there were an average of 10.15 corners per game in the 2020/21 season

I'd go so far to say that this would be something I wouldn't want. The beauty of football lies within adapting to situations in the flow of the running game, not studying set pieces. wait wait wait wait. (1) 3% is a relatively high rate. it’s higher than goals scored after throw-ins. and it’s higher than goals scored after the ball switches possession. it’s only logical that corners should yield less goals than free-kicks from the same distance. (2) it’s good defending to kick the ball out in corner. (even better defending to kick it out on the side, where a throw-in has an even smaller chance of scoring). It’s also good goalkeeping to punch the ball in corner. The game should reward good defencing not punish it.
Football is not broken don’t try to fix it. The fundamental rules and regulation lines of football are so darn perfect it’s no surprise it’s the most popular spectator sport ever. It just works. I am all for improving the game but goals on corners are not something we want that much. Teams would just try to gain corners instead of trying to score goals through technical plays. Also, corners are not always a sign that a team is attacking effectively, so punishing a team so much for conceding a corner is not good for the game as a whole.

I'm with you. Short corners also bug me, I know there are stats involved and all that but so often they take it short and don't get it in anyway. Free opportunity to cross the ball in at your leisure and then they scuff it or play it short. The stats might not be in favour of playing it short if they just...you know...kicked the ball right.

The angle sector you have to hit is extremely narrow. Yes, you have to beat the first man - but only by the smallest of margins. Because otherwise you'll end up beating everyone else as well, including your teammates.

My opinion is 4 yard corner line and implement a rule which states: there can be no more than 2 more defenders than attackers in the penalty box before the cross has been played
In other words if there is 5 attackers then the other team has a limit of 7 defenders in the box until the ball has been kicked. This means the team which is taking the corner is in control of whether to prevent the counter attack or go all out for the goal, which I think is fairer than it currently is.

  • @JnoPrds

Corner conversion rate being at 3% is a good thing. Tweaking it and making it easier to score from would mean teams would try winning corners for 90mins rather than attacking “normally”, especially for underdog teams. They would boot the ball up to the corner flag and contest the ball there hoping to win a corner. Then after a corner is won, their chance to score would be 10% for example, if these ideas are implemented.

You know City, Brentford and Brighton would design some brilliant plays. The other major downside with the current format is how a 3% success rate is such a poor outcome for the number of headers involved in clearances. So many unnecessary headers that will be affecting the health of player.

There’s a rule in hockey for short corners where you can only have a maximum amount of defenders defending the corner. It allows for great counter attacks since the defending team’s players are much higher up the pitch, so if you defend well against a very dangerous set piece you could potentially break very quickly and devastatingly

How about an indirect FK in line with where the ball went off, say 20-odd yards from goal? Or (broadly as suggested) defending team are only allowed to defend with a number of players based on however many the attacking team wants to attack with? (Other players off to halfway line)

I think you tackle the problem precisely in the first 30 something seconds, in the intro: corners aren't more effective because most teams don't care about working on them in training and making them effective. So, the problem is not in the characteristics of the corner kick in itself, but rather the teams/coaches who should be practicing them more, if they want more goals from them.
I remember that in the 19/20 season, the club I like (FC Porto) scored 74 goals, 13 on which where from corners (+5 from indirect free kicks). That's almost 1 out of 6 goals, or almost 1 goal every other game! It was so common that, if the game was kind of difficult, the fans were almost betting on a corner goal to save the game. This was because it was obvious that the coach practiced them frequently, because he saw corners as an opportunity to unlock the score and the team, at the time, was not the best at creating goal chances against tight defenses (which they encounter in 90% of the games in Portugal), so this was a good way to do it. Of course, it also helped that we had a good crosser (Alex Telles, now at Man Utd) and tall guys in the back (Pepe, Marcano and Danilo-now at PSG) that were skilled at heading the ball accurately.

Interesting video. In the last two home matches (16th & 19th Oct) Bradford City both scored and conceded directly from a corner. They scored and conceded against Bristol Rovers, and scored against Hartlepool in the following game. Maybe corners present a greater threat in the lower leagues, possibly as a result of poor defending for set pieces. I might be wrong but corners maybe do produce more goals in the lower leagues than the top divisions.
