I am 71 and grew up in a double cut band saw mill in Idaho. By the time I was 12, I had worked every position in the mill except the saw box. My two grandpas also worked in the mill one on the pond feeding the bull chain and the other in the boiler room. The mill was steam powered and in good logs we could cut 116,000 bf in a single shift.... We changed saws every 2 hours. The mill was fed with 32' logs and we had a water hydraulic de-barker. We produced electricity with a ships service turbo generator that was WW2 surplus making 750 KW and even our boiler feed water pumps were steam operated WW2 surplus. We fed the boilers with shavings from our planer mill and all edgings went to chips. I witnessed many changes to the mill from a burner for slabs to chips and the addition of the de-barker.... Our kilns were heated from waste steam from the SSTG's. Watching your videos takes me back in time.... I just wish I could smell the sawdust and the steam... My father was the foreman and had been a Chief Motor Machinists Mate in WW2 and I served 6 years on a Nuclear Submarine also as a MM1 SS.... Nothing ever took sawmilling out of my blood....Thanks Guys....
Okay, a lot of folks keep telling you guys what you need to do and how to do it. All about cutting stop signs, using the saw instead of the edger, not having a de-barker, so forth and so on. I now throw my 27.5 cents into the ring to tell you guys exactly what you need to do (I do expect you to take heed in this as is going to work the best for you, all around) What you need to do with "your" mill is, exactly what you guys have been doing, it's what you're used to, and what works for you... Keep up the good work!!!
Thank you Mark an Eddy and Mark 2 thanks for having a happy Memorial Day remember now the soldiers who lost their lives and served and save this country bless you bless you God bless you all amen
Your channel is kind of addictive. I started watching a couple of years ago and watched very video several times. You and Eddie are down to earth people. Thank you for your time.
Nice thing about life is. that everyone is entitled to their opinion BUT you are running the mill and you are entitled to do what you want to do and let other people do what they want to do. I have been watching you for several years and have enjoyed your videos always. Keep up the good jobs.
Hey Mark! Thank you for the Memorial Day sawing video and thank you all for honoring those that willingly sacrificed their lives so that we can enjoy freedom. That big log looked like a white ash log to me and it yielded some beautiful decking boards! White ash is often mistaken for oak because of the remarkable similarities in grain pattern. Stay encouraged Mark! You are a outstanding head sawyer! You and Eddie have established a very successful sawmill business based on common sense, hard work and efficient use of log resources. The shim boards that you cut are an unavoidable by-product when custom sawing cants into desired lumber order dimensions. Keep up the great work! Thanks to you all for another enjoyable video!
Thanks Marc. That’s was a nice Ash log. Ha. 👍and video! Folks like your videos because you guys are just down to earth folks. I’m excited to be able to meet you gentleman at the Bunyan show. Good times.
@@markgalicic7788 Yep good stuff about 1300 on the hardness scale. I am building a kitchen island from ash. The Amish like white ash to build furniture but I do not remember selling any to cabinet makers.

Missed the man glitter when I worked in the mill since we had band mills. It's a wonderful way to clean up the bunk marks though. Keep up the good work.
NO PROBLEM, Mark and I can't take credit for what GM and Greyhound did. All I did was call 'em like I saw 'em, a 6-71 in a bus. I've been around 6-71's in equipment like an R-22 rock truck and the IH Pay-whatever it was mixer truck and more than likely other stuff but that's what bubbled up at the time. And THAT bus motor is one step away from a blue collar worker in that it wears T-shirts and has NO color so it don't have a collar to turn down so it culls NOTHING! If you send something that way it'll deal with it. And if there wasn't one, ZZ and Eddie would be on a tandem bicycle trying to get the mandrel up to speed. That'd be a sight to see! Happy Memorial Day and it's just by Gods grace we're here at all.
Thanks for the BOOMS Mark, Sorry for my lack of viewing the last two videos you put out, Been running New Fence in my Horses Pasture and haven't been watching much RUclips, Almost done with it. I have a real aggravation with these folks telling you how to run your Mill, And I will say it again, Your Mill Do as you please Period !!! I guess I'm like John at Old and crusty LOL... Enjoyed the Video Mark, Give Eddie and Mark a shout out for me, Take care.
I would Love To have that whole Log cut Up in one buys for Great Cabin Material because My opinion is that Ash Lumber makes Great Cabin Material for building very Beautiful Cabins !
Well Mark I spent a lot of years in construction. Does not matter how much experiance or how great a job you do. There always someone that knows how to do a better job. I guess human nature but always rubbed me the wrong way.

In Australia, we don't have Memorial Day but we do have Anzac Day (25 April, a public holiday) landing in Gallipoli, Turkey. Similar to yours. Have a good long weekend.
I like ash. Great wood to work with. Did the walls of my screen porch with tongue and groove I milled up. Beautiful stuff but it will give your equipment a work out if your tools arent sharp!
Great job as always Mark..Eddie..and ZZ. I have cut plenty of ash and when you first opened it up it sure looked like ash. Unfortunately i can't get much more ash so im looking for some other species for my lap siding.
Beautiful timber!! it's strangely mesmerizing watching the grain patterns emerging on each pass. I have a question, (Which has probably been answered already in the massive number of comments!) I see the dial but is the thickness of the cut electronically / computer-controlled? - is that part of the original log handling machinery or added on later? I love that you're using an old bus engine to power it!!

How much fuel does the bus motor and how much gas does the two Predator engines go through in a Saturday morning sawing escapade? I would think the sawdust blower one probably uses more than the chop saw? John from Ontario

Hi Robert. The question I have for the armchair sawyers would be, how does your mill work? 27.5 cents? Inflation is worse than expected 😁.
Exactly. It's not broke, don't fix it. I'm from Mississippi and what you guys are doing is not only informative but entertaining for me.
