Matt Taibbi and Chrystia Freeland on the One Percent's Power and Privileges

  • The One Percent is not only increasing their share of wealth - they're using it to spread millions among political candidates who serve their interests. Example: Goldman Sachs, which gave more money than any other major American corporation to Barack Obama in 2008, is switching alliances this year; their employees have given $900,000 both to Mitt Romney's campaign and to the pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future. Why? Because, says the Wall Street Journal, the Goldman Sachs gang felt betrayed by President Obama's modest attempts at financial reform.
To discuss how the super-rich have willfully confused their self-interest with America's interest, Bill is joined by Rolling Stone magazine's Matt Taibbi, who regularly shines his spotlight on scandals involving big business and government, and journalist Chrystia Freeland, author of the new book Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else.
"We have this community of rich people who genuinely believe that they are the wealth creators and they should get every advantage and break," Taibbi tells Bill. "Whereas everybody else is a parasite and they're living off of them"
Freeland adds, "How dare they have the gall to actually argue that too much regulation of American financial services is what is killing the economy?"

Except *nothing* has changed. The World Economic forum has been strategizing how to capture world goverments. She's the exact same person with the exact same ideals. The grift is masking this global totalitarianism as populism. When she talks about "global elites" its actually code for just the petro dollar, and Canadian dollar.
The WEF and IMF requires the USD (the petrol dollar) to collapse, so the world banks can start replacing money with the new digital currencies
We'll be getting our government controlled digital currency soon enough. Saudi Arabia is finally going to allow the Yen to be used to buy oil (its currently only the US dollar, which strengthens it and allows it to be the world reserve currency) and as the western nations collapse, the brainwashed masses will still be rioting in the streets over fake racism and whatever new genders they can invent, as their governments transition into the new rental feudal system and turn everyone into a peon working for Uber or a mega factory for Amazon, while paying all your salary in rent to live in a shoe-box condo owned by a Chinese corporation.

Well, there is something interesting happening in Canada right now: the young know that they will have to fight hard for a job and they believe that the better academically prepared one is the better. So they're doing great in school and competing fiercely against each other while believing that becoming really good at something might actually give them an edge when it's time to join in the labor market.
The positive side of this? Schools are producing much smarter kids these days (at least in Canada).
The negative side? Kids are getting more and more into a each one for oneself mode (which might actually promote inequality).
So what we have here in Canada is:
    - kids are getting smarter
    - the aged are not retiring (or waiting as long as they can), so that those job openings are not there
    - technology is advancing so fast that when a kid finishes a three year University educational period, his prospective job might have been made obsolete by technological advances.
Let's be honest : technology is there so that big high tech companies make lots and lots of money. It's a job destroyer - not a job creating machine.

    • @genghisdon1
      @genghisdon1 5 лет назад +2

actually, it is the "management" of the system, that makes tech enemy of the people. It's capitalism that is the problem. A worker co-op instead, ie worker control, would lead to very different results

  • @barbparknavy9119

So what we need is a Standard Living deduction where the first 40K of income (adjusted annually for inflation) is COMPLETELY TAX FREE--no state, federal, local, sales or property tax....providing a tax shelter for the working poor and making it impossible for politicians to promise to make the rich pay their fair share while on the backside dumping the burden on the average working people. It would reduce the poverty trap of people currently on social safety net programs and allow people to climb out and force the burden upward. File your taxes, get a card as a receipt that allows you to bypass sales tax too--this word encourage underground income to file too. No politician should be able to touch what a person needs to live.

    • @zyzzer
      @zyzzer 2 года назад

Why do you think it's a good idea that millions of people live for free while others pay for it? If you argued that all taxes should be abolished, I'd say you have a good case. But you're just asking for more welfare - unless govt spending is DRASTICALLY reduced in your program then the burden is just shifted. And without massive cuts in spending, you're looking at the burden ultimately shifting back against those you're trying to help - e.g. you can give them tax discounts but you can't stop businesses from otherwise raising prices to offset their new burden.
And how exactly do you ensure that the first 40k is tax-free? Do they have to calculate all of the taxes they paid and get refunded? How do you expect the poor and middle class to understand the complexities of the tax structure, let alone calculate what seems like a simple tax calculation but is absolutely not? Are you advocating that their rent be adjusted to remove the portion that pays for property tax? What about all the other taxes incurred by the landlord to run the business? What if the landlord makes less than 40k himself - or any situation where two people are doing business and paying tax but make less than 40k? And why do you think landlords should have to pay the property tax but the renter who actually lives in the property shouldn't have to pay the tax imposed by government?
Then you have the complexities of our multi-level tax structure to calculate. How do I get a tax credit for the taxes paid on the gasoline used to transport my food to the market that I then used my own car to drive to pick up? How on earth would anyone know how much is a legitimate discount for the taxes I paid on taxed goods traveling across the country/world in order for me to purchase? And if we're going with the goal of the first 40k tax-free, how do we adjust for online purchases? If I buy on Amazon, do I get a tax credit for the transportation and regulatory taxes paid to get things delivered to me that otherwise inflate the cost I ultimately pay?
This was just a 5 minute brain storm, imagine how much deeper it can and does get when really researched and analyzed! I'm sure your heart is in the right place. But this will have, as usual, the absolute opposite effect of what you hope for.

There's some great commenting on this vid by you guys. I would especially like any recommendations you can give for further learning about all of this. There's a lot here I didn't understand because finance and financial structures are difficult for me to get--as in why capital gains and the...other thing (lol)--are taxed at the rate of 15%.
Any of you who want to understand psychopathy, I recommend the following books:
The Mask of Sanity, by Hervey Cleckley. This was the first real discussion and definition psychopathy. Yes, it's older stuff and drier to read, but it's the "mother" of popular books on the subject. It went OP for a while and the only way you could get a copy was from his widow, but I see it's been reprinted at an exorbitant price. Try to find it in a library. I'd read it third on this list unless you're totally into the subject.
Psychopaths, by Alan Harrington. This is the one I recommend to everyone here. Harrington shows how psychopathy functions in a society like ours, and points out how they all aren't Norman Bates, serial sexual sadists, and other "common criminals" which is what most people think. He describes one CEO, a famous comedian, an influential writer, politicians, etc., who he feels are actually more dangerous to the world because of their lack of "moral center" and power they wield. He described a famous humanist psychologist I recognized instantly, and you might recognize some of these others, too. Intriguing book that keeps you reading and is as useful today as when it first came out. Harrington is the author who started my journey to understand and identify these monsters of our species.
Without Conscience: The disturbing world of the psychopaths among us, by Robert D. Hare. Hare is a Canadian psychologist who developed a test to measure psychopathy, and the percentage of the trait in any given individual. The test is now widely used, but it's controversial in the field. What I liked the most is that he says the DSM category of antisocial personality disorder, which a lot of "modern" psychologists/psychiatrists use, should be separate from the older term "psychopath," because the latter are not usually criminals. He gives excellent ways to spot one long before anyone else does, and long before they damage/use you. Since it's in print and was a bestseller, you can find it at a good price, even new. Seriously, start with this one if you want a great read and useful info.
Sorry to go on, but so many comments here were about these scumbags that I thought some of you might like them.
Remember: I'd love some recommendations on other vids here or wherever.

Simply look around yourself... each and every one of us can do this quite easily: there is PLENTY OF LAND still left, plenty of water and other natural RESOURCES, ETC ETC available... we can see this with our own eyes. Birth control, cancer and unfortunately abortive procedures and harmful (versus healing) medications have impacted our population growth and, in fact, in the USA in particular, our birth rates have fallen drastically. The first person that pointed this out to me happened to be a brilliant Priest. He also supplied all of the statistical data to scientifically back up his well-researched statements. Fortunately, in recent years, Donald Trump (whom I now support) has worked very hard as evidenced in FACT by doing a U`TURN of as per usual policy and procedures. He has done this by way of peace making on a global scale (think Korea, the fact that he was the only person to ever be invited into the Secret City; we are no longer dependent on the Middle East for oil, etc. etc.) The argument for oil lines is not even appropriate due to the fact that over seas carriers (ie. shipping oil from the Middle East) are much more likely to cause world environmental issues in the event of a disaster versus land which is extremely easy to contain. He has eliminated ISIS, etc etc etc. Another path DJ Trump is strong in pursuing is Space Technology. It can and WILL be the future and there are just so many, many ways we can be more sustaining ONCE we get stabilized (current pandemic and Progressives pushing unrest); I, personally, have been (on my own via my own study and action) been someone that is close to the earth and try to be as environmentally friendly as possible. I believe that sharing and teaching are ways toward these goals versus government mandatory thumb screws. Which reminds me that President Trump has initiated a wonderful program called FARMERS TO FAMILIES wherein local farmers with excess are providing those in need with fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables. There are so many things we can do which is in stark contrast to the Globalist, Luciferian Illuninatii, Masonic agendas which are basically operating in the shadows of darkness with similar agendas. IMO anyone who believes it is their duty to determine LIFE is playing GOD and has NO business planning global anythings for anyone. IF they wanted what is GOOD for the people of the world they could have done many times over again a long time ago. To me, that alone reeks of hate. Hope this makes sense I've tried to address your questions but it's late, I'm not thinking very clearly but there is so much more I could write. Great questions, though!!

But the rich are getting richer and the government keeps bailing them and their corporations out. And we thought 2020 was bad? 2021 is going to be worse.

@Dirk Knight Many of the banks have been bankrolling oil exploration, weapons manufacturing, and a number of other unsavory actions. We have bailed them out on occasion and their executives have profited greatly on the decline of the US into Oligarchy (we are no longer a Democracy). Our place it the world has declined as the banks have financed insurgences and over-extent in doing harm to others, like the ouster of Evo Morales in Bolivia so we could steal their natural resources of Lithium and return Nationalized petroleum to the oligarchs in Bolivia and put the people of Boliva under an fascist government that is happy to act as our puppet in attacking Venezuela.

Freeland is a little too close to the people involved to see the big picture. A bailout may have been necessary, but giving the money to the bankers only further destroyed the economy. As Matt Tiabbi said, it wasn't done in the right way. If they had given the money to the home owners to pay off their homes, the bankers would have still ended up with the money, but the tax-paying home-owners would also have benefited. Giving the bankers money without any restrictions was foolish.

A single person cannot become a multi millionaire or billionaire, as a "self made man" or a person who "built a business by themselve." From birth to billionaire, a person has help all along the way. I guarantee, if the "self made" person was thrown into a large deserted island, he or she would not be able to become a billionaire. They would not have a society with taxpayers and workers to provide the infrastructure, security, rule of law, education, healthcare, technology, government funding, emergency services, and more importantly.....workers to exploit. Without the workers who actually physically produce the goods, the self made man would accomplish very little. Take Jeff Bezos for example, without his workers and a civil society, he would have nothing. Sure, he had the idea for Amazon, but Amazon would still be just an idea, without a working class to actually physically make the company work. As a matter of fact, I'm sure the workers don't even need Jeff, he needs them. Hell, we could remove the Capitalists and let the workers own and run the business. It would be more "efficient" by removing the people who don't do the work, but takes all the profits the workers created. This self-made myth has gone on long enough, as well as the myth that 1 person can accumulate billions of dollars all by themselves.

"Under the ‘Washington Consensus’, the subjugation of law and states
to this ‘spontaneous order’ of the market was entrusted to international
or regional organizations (WTO, IMF, EU) which worked methodically to
dismantle labour laws, social security and public services-the three pillars
of the social state built to implement the principles of social justice
proclaimed in the post-war declarations. Foucault did not follow them in
this. On the contrary, he denounced the ‘inflationary critique of the state’ and declared that ‘all those who participate in the great state phobia’
were ‘going with the wind’.55 He grasped the crucial importance of social
security, and defended it against the ‘unbridled liberalism’ that would
lead to individual coverage for those who could afford it and nothing
    for the rest."56
"Noting the objective solidarity that unites the peoples of the world in
face of health risks, the creators of the World Health Organization in
1946 aimed to mobilize it with a view to averting these threats. One of
the mainsprings of this active solidarity in the face of disease is-as it
was among the Babylonians-the sharing of knowledge. However, this
sharing is now coming up against the prevailing order of intellectual
property rights, in conditions that illustrate the schizophrenic nature
of the international legal order, torn between post-war social-justice
principles and the free market. On the one hand, the Preamble to the
WHO Constitution states that ‘The extension to all peoples of the benefits
of medical, psychological and related knowledge is essential to
    the full attainment of health.’"

Russia's GINI (inequality index) has dropped significantly since 2000's (end of Eltsin Era), while in the US it has gone up tremendously. Ironically now, US is ranked much higher than Russia, somewhere near Saudi Arabia, so the lessons in Russia were learned and are now successfully applied at home (Russia's transformation in the 90s was carried out mainly by US advisors). So what Matt is afraid about has already happened and worse, from the inequality standpoint US has surpassed Russia now.

Great interview, thoughtful, and two well researched and well versed journalists. That said, Chrystia is incorrect regarding Canada and sub-prime. See below an article form 2008 Globe and Mail:
    From Saturday's Globe and Mail
    December 12, 2008 at 11:54 PM EST
In the first half of this year, as the subprime mortgage crisis was exploding in the United States, a contagion of U.S.-style lending practices quietly crossed the border and infected Canada's previously prudent mortgage regime.
New mortgage borrowers signed up for an estimated $56-billion of risky 40-year mortgages, more than half of the total new mortgages approved by banks, trust companies and other lenders during that time, according to banking and insurance sources. Those sources estimated that 10 per cent of the mortgages, worth about $10-billion, were taken out with no money down.
The mushrooming of a Canadian version of subprime mortgages has gone largely unnoticed. The Conservative government finally banned the practice last summer, after repeated warnings from frustrated senior officials and bankers that the country's financial system was being exposed to far too much risk as the housing market weakened.
Just yesterday, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty repeated the mantra that the government acted early to get rid of risky mortgages. What he and Prime Minister Stephen Harper do not explain, however, is that the expansion of zero-down, 40-year mortgages began with measures contained in the first Conservative budget in May of 2006.

When the government gets involved, it regulates and drives up costs that kills our ability to compete against these monopolies. Socialism is bad because it creates a government monopoly, which is fueled by debt. Corporatism is also bad because it uses government to monopolize a few. Capitalism however, is where we vote with our dollars. We don't have capitalism, have not had for over 100 years. Time to bring it back to let minorities and gay communities keep their capital so they can create the world, locally, how they want to live. Empower local leaders.

I have noticed something very particular about these guys at "upper" institutions. And to be quite honest, I come from an "upper" institution, but I do not carry this sense of arrogance around. They literally believe that they should "determine" the "right amount of inequality" that a society should have.
God, their envy and jealousness of rich people shines right through.
We live in a world of scarcity. Like the commissar orders coming down from your "elites" should determine how much someone should have. What a joke.
There's only one of two options with these people. Either they know what they say is a joke and are not being genuine and want to make more money by selling more stuff. Or they actually believe that the government is somehow going to set the level of inequality so that the people (which people I don't know) are "better off" and just the right amount of "equality" that a society should have.
All that we should have is EQUALITY UNDER THE LAW. The law should treat all people EQUALLY, not "determine" if someone should be given more or less, or "determine" other affairs of FREE MEN. People are perfectly able to do that by themselves.

[7:40] If they are poor they deserve to be that way. - It must be clearly understood that you cannot become rich without making me poor. Stealing is the only way to become rich. In the old days kings used to declare war, to steal the wealth of other nations, and enslave their people. The same method is still used today, but secretly, using the false money, as Keynes pointed out.
Thus win-lose is a law of nature. No one can violate it. In every win-win case if you look carefully, you will always find a third party who will be the loser. As long as money is there, win-lose will create and grow the wealth gap. Poverty should be measured by this wealth gap.
[47:00] No one is offering a sufficiently compelling alternative. - Money is not an object of nature, therefore money is false, free, and abundant at its source, which is the central bank. How can you create anything true using something false like money? You cannot. Since money is false, money also cannot be necessary to run an economy.
So get rid of money, and create money-less economy (MLE). If you think carefully, you will realize that it is possible to run the exact same economy in the exact same way, without any kind of money. MLE is the only system that can give you full democracy and any lifestyle you want. Take a look at the MLE chapter in theoryofsouls.wordpress.com/

Charlie Munger's company needed no bailout. But he is right that the bailout was needed. But couldn't it have been structured differently so as not to reward bad management and fraud?

It’s how the system works. Your either part of the club (Trump) or in service of that club (Freeland).

What does the financial industry create? Nothing. They make nothing, create nothing. They move money around. I can get into here, but society doesn’t need them. At all!

*dont fight Nature law : Pareto Principle*
20% shall have 80% of wealth ( the 1% have 35% of wealth)
the second 20% shall have 15%
the bottom 60% takes the rest.
what the government can do is to raise tax to reduce income inequality
    say 50%….

The solution to this issue is to get back to economic justice and get back to economic reality. Let the economic system crash, so that the pain is huge, and you can bet that the system will change to the one that works in this world, not some progressive utopian dream, or on the flip side, crony capitalism we have now. Divorce the money/influence from the politics and put people in jail, then things would change.
