Modern drive systems and gyros... this would be a pretty awesome vehicle.
A gyro stabilization system would be a must, as all designs up to this point (and there have been a lot!) suffer from the same oscillating occupants issue during acceleration or deceleration. Other issues that could be resolved or at least greatly improved via modern technology is visibility, for example using an external camera on one side connected to a widescreen monitor on the occupants side.
@@JustWasted3HoursHere yeah that sounds cool and very necessary for a vehicle like this
The music is always the best part of this era of films.
WHY ARE WE NOT FUNDING THIS????!!!!
because it sucks?
They're unstable. Also slowing down is difficult. They're a safety nightmare in general.
@@Katzelle3 But I think we can improve them with the technology we have now. The turning control and movements can definitely become smoother. As about slowing down, I think someone needs to come up with different way of braking (don't think we can add the usual brake system there. The person inside would just go spinning around xD)
@@abdullamasud4278
It also wouldn't fit in any garage or indoor parking lot.
It's less compact than a conventional car but provides none of the safety features of one.
If that technology is not meant for high speed applications, then why not use rubber tracks instead?
Abdulla Masud trueee i mean, it runs on gravity that would solve so much we really should find a way to improve this prototype
Speaking from a hamster's point of view, I'd be very happy in one of these :)
🤣🤣😁
Lol
very interesting to see how they go down the hill
Really well.
Geos well, just don't try to stop..
I have a feeling this was the inspiration for General Greivous's vehicle...
I bet that contraption is fun to drive ! Hats off to this man for being different and making something that works.I am uncertain about road use but the beach would be a perfect and safe place to ride it.
Safe only for the driver 😁
I hope there's one of these still around. Would be a hit at parties! :)
brake hard and the wheel stops but you spin around inside, keeping the kinetic energy to wheelspin from a green light lol.
I'd like to see a hot rod version of these wheels run at Bonneville!
i'de love to see that go over a speed bump!
As a matter of fact, the view would be just fine. Just as when you have those optical illusions where you spin a ball with pictures inside that has slits, it lets you see right through at the right speed. I assume it would be the same for the vehicle.
two main problems with this.
1. viewing obstruction.
2. falling flat on one side at high speeds.
there are probably many more seeing that they didn't go into mass production...
Never underestimate the power of human ingenuity
Amazing ideas people had (and have) !
How much to replace a tire?
If I had a pound for every failed invention that was going to "revolutionise" something I would have enough money to invent something that would.
Yeah, and you'd still be earning to this day!
Epicly unstearable
that is the coolest thing i've ever seen on youtube
Love the music.
If this was appropriately funded, I can't help but imagine what it would've evolved into.
It’s the vision part I think. You can’t see out too well without effort.
@@Zero-wl7oe Once the wheel is spinnign at decent speed your eyes won't see horizontal lines at all, it'll be just a slight darkening of the view.
@@bo-dine7971 Ye was kinda thinking that. 👍
@bo-dine7971 a camera would help with that.
This is nice one !!
I bet this would be very fun to drive. It would be super hard to turn.
Notice they are on completely flat ground. Because if you have any sort of obstacle in front of that thing, especially one that it might catch on, you will suddenly find yourself doing a high-speed, very tight loop the loop -- multiple times. I didn't see any safety restraints, either.
Good work, Mr. Garrison.
Very cool! It would be a nightmare on an icy road though, sand dunes maybe?
I didn't know Julia Child endorsed eccentric automobiles.
Back when women had fun working together with men and their crazy inventions. Today, they'd single-handedly make a work environment more toxic than Chernobyl.
it is amazing when you see footage from these times, how far they allready were. science, kulture, and everything. then came the war and civilization fell back for decades.
Just a reset, we are going to see another one.
What are you talking about? We had satellites, rockets, computers and internet now thanks to WW2,"civilization fell back for decades",what a joke lol.
@@jekesan4221 There is not only science, dude.
Quite the reverse of what you said happened
@@jeperstone Ok, it depends on your views on what "progress" is.
After seeing this (Yes I know this is where south park got their reference), I must say Monty Python women impersonations sounds 100% accurate instead of overdone.
Back when they used to make vehicles more futuristic than today.
What a fantastic vehicle.
Something tells me I wouldn't be able to close any windows. I don't see any room for golf clubs either, so it wouldn't work on a golf course. If you like motorcycles or bicycles, or you have lots of good weather, this might be an interesting alternative.
Really want one of these :^>
thanks for this video :D
And now for a crash test :D
imagine if these were successful in the car industry today
I want to see a race with these with bigger engines
WOW! just WOW!
HOW did these NOT catch on?!!? Why aren't we using these regularly today!?
I won't lie. All this looked like a foolproof idea until I got to the steering part.
Definitely way a head of its time
What do you do when it rains?
It was the lack of trunk space that really kept it from getting off the ground.
this + gyroscope to keep inner cabin stable will be epic vehicle!
No idea why but the music makes this hilarious lmao
😂😂😂😂😨😅💃💡🎡🐹⁉🔄🔄🔄🔄🚧💥💨🚑👰🤕💫💫💫🚮🗑😒🗯👎✌
pretty awesome
this looks really awsum.
@VlzHyPnOtIzTzlV That's a good point!
OMG I NEEEEED one of these things!
That's brilliant! Why aren't we using these now?!
Take a fast corner and we'll see how many times that thing barrel roles
@VlzHyPnOtIzTzlV you could probably get around that by have two separate wheels in parallel. The two wheels would be much thinner. You could couple them with a guide wheel top-and-bottom (like a roller coaster to the track) which would mean the two wheels would not be permanently connected and hence your vision would never by obstructed by cross-braces. You could probably have the two wheels shift out of line during cornering for maximum traction.
Beeing able to "start on slime" might come in handy after alien invasion. I´d suggest the driver wears a hat then.
I wonder how it goes up hill. Down hill it probably goes like a motorized German Wheel (Rhönrad) with the driver spinning round and round. With modern electronics it should be possible to do some Rhönrad-like trick moves.
What a wonderful machine. I want one.
We've seen versions of this concept over and over, mostly in the 30's. Oddly enough, it's a GOOD idea! When will there be a marketable version?
Except that if you stop too fast, you'll spin like a hamster.
Yeah it's fundamentally flawed because of the so called 'gerbaling' effect. Maybe one with stabilisers would work to anchor the passenger part. Like the person above states gerbaling is where the passenger seating revolves round while braking and to a smaller degree, accelerating. With nothing to anchor it down one would fly inside down in a sort of hamster wheel.
@@oskahuxley6322 The wheel in the video had a system in place to stop the gerbaling effect, it would move back and forth but it wouldnt go beyond the point of seeing whats in front.
Volante para echar brazos de churrero y nula visión que provoca vómitos, ataques de epilepsia y espasmos. Good job!
this looks really fun! and dangerous!
because first the visibility to the front was impeded, and second, if you mashed on the brakes too hard, they would lock, the wheel would keep spinning, and you would start spinning as well
best vehicle ever.
no, it really didn't. Didn't steer all that well either, and one of the problems with breaking was a habit known as "gerbiling", the interior compartment (i.e. you and your seat) would start spinning when the wheel stopped).
All that rocking would make me seasick :-c ~~
would love to see it braking at high speed...
I love the ladies BBC RP (received pronunciation)!
BADASSSS!!! That's one sexy ass wheel....
Only AWESOME !!!
Damn! I want this!
This is cool
The new Bond villain escape vehicle!
i want one of these so bad
Cool ride, I'd like to cruise Sonic in one. Does it burn-out?
That is cool
And of course the lack of a windshield, roof, doors, back seat, headlights, and of course the annoyance of neighborhood kids rolling on its side all the time
LOOKS SO COOL AND DANGEROUS I WANT ONE D:
HOLY SHIT....I NEED ONE!
Anyone else watch this and was strongly reminded of General Grievous' ride in Episode III?
"gravity itself is our motive power" the gas engine is just for looks
"we can stop on ice, we can start in mud" but we won't be demonstrating that today
ahhh yo tengo uno de esos!...
yeah, i can really see this catching on...
@britishpathe visibility wouldnt be much of a problem when the wheels moved fast enough.
After watching this i want a Xylophone !!!!!
@DyslexiaSkucs yeh was it not mr garrison who invented that, im sure the steering was a little different and i didnt like the seat much
This reminds me of that SouthPark episode where ,Mr.Gerreson makes something extremely similar.... Only a little more physical. (Something went up into the pooper.) Funny episode. I have to assume this is where the idea come from for that episode's.
there were many iterations of this principle not even sure if this was the first
@Funnysterste true in a sense but then again after the WWII technology leaped forward in great steps. Also the political situation in Europe improved so that everybody was looking forward to a unified Europe working together.
0:08 Now that's a cool looking cat!
@xrsilverxr
Of course they had HD in the 30's! HD is only the digital representation of the analogue image source and usually you loose a lot in this transition even with the movies from the 30's.
doesn't like much of an every day means of transportation, but it would rock at funfairs.
Has no one seen the problem that if driving one of these you cannot see directly in front of you?! (especially if it had chunky rubber tyres)
At 1:04 you can see that the driver's view is actually quite good. Not as good as a conventional vehicle, acceptable enough - like a pilot flying a piston driven plane having to look through the whirling propeller. It obviously cab be done.
Actually the slots flash by so fast that the view becomes clear.
u can put a curved mirrror
The description is wrong, it says "one seater four wheeler," unless I'm missing something i don't think it had four wheels....
lol! i had the same thought! lube up the gear stick!
Monocycles aren't so rare these days. There are many designs out there. So yes, the design has been developed further. Some ideas built on, others were dropped. But they are alive and well. Both combustion and electric.
how did they take care of the braking problem?
i want a modern version with wifi and bluetooth.
"Muh wifi and bluetooth". Oh, modern priorities.
how do you stop?
LOLOLxD Inertia takes over.Wow video seemed futuristic yet 80 years we still live quite the same way as them
We done goofed!
wonder what would happen during hard braking
E tem gente que pensa que estas invenções, são atuais!!!!
@VlzHyPnOtIzTzlV Because of the speed of the wheel, it would only seem like there were vertical bars in your way, so it won't be so bad. The real issue would be turning.
Hey, it still beats what you go through at the airport.
it didn't revolutionize transport. The problem is that the interior space is limited by the size of the wheel whereas in standard vehicles the length of the vehicle is what determines interior space. How would one transport a family and belongings in one of these?
I wanna see one hit the brakes hard hehe
strong acceleration and deceleration would clearly be fun also very sharp curves.
How do you break?
