1990s Critics Review Extreme-G & Iggy’s Reckin’ Balls on Nintendo 64 (Nintendo Switch Online)

- The Nintendo Switch Online is on a roll lately. Not just because they finally have a steady stream of releases, but also because Expansion Pack subscribers will have access to Iggy’s Reckin’ Balls. And that’s not the only racing game hitting the online service this week, because Extreme-G is also speeding to the finish line. That’s cool news, but are either of these games actually worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, GamePro, Computer & Video Games and more classic magazines to see what the critics said back when these games first came out. I hope you have that need for speed, because this is going to be a highly-competitive episode of Nintendo Switch Online Review Crew.

Iggy’s was such a fun game to play with my brother as kids.
Mischief Makers was also fun
It's cool to see this on NSO and I'm always happy to watch this series!
My favorite N64 racing game is definitely F-Zero X. Automobili Lamborghini is another favorite of mine. I think that mostly stems from the fact that the Lamborghini Diablo was my favorite car as a kid haha
These were weird choices, but not unwelcome. Considering how miniscule the N64 game library is even the small picks like these are nice hidden gems.
I don’t know if Extreme-G is all that weird-it was fairly popular back in the day.
Extreme G is one of the coolest racing games. It's up there with Mario Kart & Rock N Roll Racing imo
I love all the comparisons to WipEout, considering WipEout 64 came out later.
THAT'S my favorite racing game on the system.
Diddy Kong Racing had a fantastic 1 player story mode with great presentation. Excitebike 64, 1080, Waverace and F-Zero X were also great. Ridge Racer 64 was decent too. Hard to pick one single favourite that towers above the rest. They all have their pros and cons.
I actually like the looks Ball Crew back when I don't get what your seeing as creepy with them at all also I hope there will be N64 Fog Reduction for Extreme-G when on the switch
Iggy's was insanely underrated and one of the most fun couch multiplayer games back during that time. The music was amazing and the close races where you could grapples friends off the map was too good.
Mickey’s speedway USA would be a cool one to bring back - less predatory than Disney speedstorm 😅
Ok but why does one of the balls in Iggie's Reckin' Balls look like the "LETS FUCKING GO" meme
I used to play iggys Reckin Balls when I was a kid when I had a Nintendo 64 I was shocked it came on the Nintendo switch in the expansion pass
What I’m looking for is a controller translation for Extreme G. It’s fun, but I’m working in the dark. There’s no tutorial like Exciti Bike 64.
I remember reading about both of these in Nintendo Power as a kid and wanting try them, especially Iggy, which I can't say I ever expected to get a rerelease!
And my favorite racing game on N64? Well, sorry to give a predictable answer, but it's a tie between Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing.
MK64 is still a game I come back to, and overall my favorite Mario Kart, DKR combining a full-on adventure with boss battles, hub worlds and side quests with kart racing is just brilliant, and it has some of my favorite tracks in any kart racer!
Really tough question but I'd place all these as the best on the N64 for me: F-Zero X, World Driver Championship and Top Gear Overdrive.
I've never heard of either of these. Makes this the ideal time to try them out.
QOTD, favorite racer is the boring choice, Mario Kart 64.
Thank you for posting this video. It was useful information for me.
My favorite racer on the N64 would have to be Top Gear Rally. I played so many hundreds of hours of it. A close second would be POD Racer, though. I have a flight stick to play it with, and it really gave the sense of piloting one of those pods from the movie.
My childhood.
Think I somewhat remember playing Iggy when I was a little girl. The game play looks very familiar. However, if I do remember it correctly, yeah, it is no Mario Kart, which brings me to my answer Mario Kart 64. Yeah, racing games I could give or take on, but really liked Mario Kart. 😉
Heck yeah, this is the real N64 experience: weird racing games and weird Acclaim games. And this are both things, lol.
I hope they'll also include Midway games eventually 😂
My favorite racing game for the N64 is F-Zero X. Sunch a fantastic game.
I don’t have a favorite racer, just keep bringing more classic racers so I can beat my friends in nso. Gotta say it is nice to not deal with heavy rng like mk64 which Carries some people, I don’t mind that game still though
Id probably check it out never owned a n64 went from nes to snes to gamecube 😅. But my friends did.
With retro emulation becoming more prevalent, I imagine the license holders for these older games are going to be eager to license out the games to Nintendo and others.
Seeing Iguana Entertainment and Acclaim games on switch online makes me wonder if we can get any of thier south park games to show up on NSO (reminder, 007 Goldeneye and Quest for Camelot, two lisenced games are already on NSO)
UGHHH brother, EUUGGHHHHHH 🤢
@worriorjack i don't like south park either but the snowball game looks kinda funny
Wave Race is the greatest Nintendo 64 game ever 🙌 🚤😊
I love iggys reckin balls!!!!! My brother notified me last night it's on switch now so I'm super excited to get back into practice so I can stomp him when I visit 😂
Xtreme G racing graphically, is middle of the road to kind of bland with rudimentary shapes and general silhouettes of what could be called a bike. But, that’s not why you play. The game while not perfect, captures my attention with decent track designs and competitive AI. The vehicles control well despite not cornering as tight as I would want. I want to be skilled enough to avoid hitting walls. That’s almost impossible here. Similar to FZero, you have a vehicle damage bar. Touching anything but the road leads to integrity loss. Crazy thing is that unless it’s a weapon attack the damage is negligible. I can’t begin to understand why they have a break or jump in the first circuit . It is infuriating . Unlike F-zero, the racers use weaponry to muscle their way to first place. I like this concept. I also like that it takes a back seat to the racing itself. but, it ends up souring the experience in the end because the weapons feel half baked and short lived. That said I still like them. Mario kart needs weapons xtreme g does not. Implementing weapons can take this game to the next level. I don’t want to make this go on forever but these are just my first thoughts.
I definitely recommend giving it a go. You could lose yourself.
Not a fan of racing games, wish they’d add more platformers for the N64.
Well, didn't see THAT coming. After Blast Corps my money was on more Rare games first and foremost, not a sudden blast from Acclaim's past. But I guess it's third-party games still, so my prediction of no new Nintendo-developed games for the N64 this year IS still holding up... sorta?
In investigating the name Throwback, I saw that they have apparently purchased Acclaim's old catalogue (and subsequently sold some of them, like Re-Volt racing, all the sports games etc), which explains why Nintendo getting both of them in one go- probably a cheap deal. They apparently they sell Extreme-G 2 separately on Steam, so it's unlikely NSO will get that one even if PC and N64 versions are different, if only because I think Throwback will see putting the game on NSO as eating into potential profits.
Still, I'm curious if games like Wizards and Warriors for NES will now be possible? Or if those weren't "Acclaim" enough to be part of Throwback's purchase. We're probably not getting Turok, Forsaken 64 or Shadowman since those have been remade by Nightdive (Throwback seem REAL fond of those guys), but we could possibly get Project S.W.A.R.M... anything else I see in their cataloque looks like it's too 'licensed' to ever be part of NSO. Shame- I'd have liked to replay the South Park FPS, and I liked the Stargate and Judge Dredd games on the SNES...
Teaming up with Nightdive is probably the smartest thing Throwback could have done. That won them a lot of praise and most likely put them on the right footing for whatever they choose to do next. If they own the 8-bit stuff Acclaim put out, then I would love to see them do a proper compilation. Give it to Digital Eclipse and do a bunch of interviews about both the good and the bad games, since I'm sure there are a lot of stories about both.
Wait. Is Forsaken from Nightdive based on the N64 or PS1 version?
@@heardofrvb I actually went and looked for this... and according to the closest I could find to an answer,a a review of Forsaken Remasted, it is:
"not a port, nor some old code shoved into a wrapper to make it run on modern machines. This is a full rework of the game’s assets inside of a revamped engine designed to run and function the way 3D engines worked when the game was originally made while taking advantage of present-day computing power." So I guess technically it's... neither of those two? Maybe it's better to think of it as something totally fresh?
@@goranisacson2502 So it has an entirely different campaign? Separate from the two? Man, the Forsaken universe is hard to keep track.
@@heardofrvb According to what I can find, which IS very little, it apparently "combines the PC and N64 versions campaigns". So I guess it tries to be everything in one package?
I’m going to be honest…Nintendo’s really, really _really_ stretching the NSO apps with games, not everyone really remembers either at all or if they do, too fondly, likely because they don’t have any *big* plans in 2024/early 25 such as a console reveal, a fanfare worthy new game in an established ip (lord knows they hadn’t already done that a few times)
QOTD: Toss up between Mario kart 64 and F-Zero X
Is Iggy's Reckin Balls good? No. Did I rent it several times from Blockbuster back in the day? Oh yeah!
Still waiting for the true best racing game: Snowboard Kids
i hope both of them will show up soon enough so we can have more eyes on getting Atlus out of the SMT/Persona Pits for a bit
I just realized it was extreme g 2 that i has countless hours playing not the first one 😂 i knew the graphics were better than this
This must have been the weirdest video for you to make on this so far given these bizarre game choices.
Acclaim sure was something back then.
At least there were reviews to talk about, unlike some of the other NSO updates this year.
