I've been to the Brunswick branch of Cheaper Buy Miles a couple of times and thought it was a great place for buying picnic snacks, especially when you have 8 people or more. Those 1kg cheese wheels and the hams are too much for a small household but a pretty good deal for larger parties. I agree with you that Aldi is probably better for most other essentials.
My nearest discount grocer is NQR. I have 2 stores about an hour away. I find they have better options for our family with allergies of gluten, dairy and peanut.
Cheaper Buys Miles only has something like three stores and its all concentrated in inner west of Melbourne. As for value for money... I have shopped there a lot and saved a lot of money. I have found sometimes they have weird flavour profiles that probably were discontinued. Cheese and Ham you need to be careful though I have found sometimes they are due to go off the next day, so always check. But I have found blue vein cheese before for $1 a wedge ($5 in coles). mediterranian dips that were 3 for $5 and ($4-5 each in Coles), oat and walnut biscuits $2 ($6 in coles), cranberry and oat biscuits $1 ($6 in coles) and even some biscuits with Australian seasonings for $1-2 a packet. Some of the stores are small but the one in Footscray is now twice the size and nearly always busy. I have tried some of the vegan meals and cheese there and they were surprisingly yummy and a bargin. I always go in with a shopping cart and come out with it loaded for the month. Yes know what your prices are, check for use-by and prepare to try something new. BTW Use by in Australia must be used by that date. Best before can be eaten after the date. Victoria also has places like Not-Quite-Right in Werribee and a few other locations.... its like a cochroach it goes belly up and the stores close due to bank-ruptcy; but a few always remain open. This was a go to for me when I lived in Mooroolbark and there was one in Kilsyth. I was getting whole meals for a couple of dollars and I even convinced my housemate to supplement his very unhealthy 2 minute noodle diet every meal with produce from there. He loved it. Especially the ice-cream. Actually before I convinced him to go he said it was a waste of time and I did not know what I was talking about. 5 mins after he arrived I got a colourful text message pretty much saying this is unbelievable. Thankyou for sending there. Bayswater apparently has another place I am not sure where it is but Mum goes there often. I find also the Reject Shop, though not as big a stock has some savings to be made. Especially the packets of hoyts spices which are all over $1. Another place I save money is shopping at the Footscray Markets. I often get meat there cheaper than the supermarkets. Roast pork is always cheap....they do not score the rind but will score it if you ask and usually in a diamond pattern which always makes crisp crackling. I do not necessarily trust the veges in the Footscray Markets though. Victoria market can sometimes have good deals too I used to shop there a lot for fresh fruit and veg there. I find usually places in Melbourne with a high Asian community the meat tends to be cheaper. A friend once told me that it is because they expect cheaper prices so get it, For some reason Greater Melbourne, Victoria has more of a demand for these places than Regional or other states. I lived in NSW for a few years and missed my discount stores a lot. I think its the community factor that makes these places big and stay open. Regional Vic: if you are in Shepparton area SPC/Admona factory outlet always had good deals on canned fruit and baked beans when I grew up if it is still there. hope this helps.
Is that NQR? We have them in Adelaide 😊 The Heysen Blue cheese is delicious and made only half an hour from me. If you were to purchase it here it's at least $11-$12!!
@@SimpleMealPlanPrep NQR has quite a few stores around Melbourne too. They do a lot of excess stock (things that didn't sell as well as expected at the big guys) and some near use by stuff too. Do check them out, you can get some awesome bargains.
I pop into the Cheaper Buy Miles store in Footscray about once a fortnight and often leave empty handed. They have a lot of vegan foods which mimic meat which I’m just not into, or foods and sugary drinks made in China. Yoghurts $3 are good and cheaper than supermarkets but they have very short use by dates. Bulk sauces like mustard are 2 litre tooooo big but best value. Their toiletries are all very old stock not worth buying. Ham like the one you bought and the bigger huge legs of smoked ham for $25 a leg are best value ever- like you cut up into pieces big enough to fit into your air fryer in the future and freeze. The European ‘Podravka’ brand clearance soup sachets, spices and foods if you’re lucky, are worth buying even if they have very short expiry dates- best quality and they sell them much cheaper than the delicatessens. And they once had the French blackberry conserve for only $2 a jar. Honestly, I believe that Cheaper Buy Miles is a store not worth going out of your way to shop at- except for all those $25 legs of ham after Christmas.
