  • Real-time soldering up a "3D LED Christmas Tree" DIY kit that I purchased from AliExpress. Unfortunately it arrived a few days after Christmas, but it's still very pretty.
    No commentary on this one as I had a stinker of a cold and my throat was in no state for talking :(
    Buy the kit here (the build instructions I was following are in the product description): www.aliexpress...

      I ordered this! The wouldn't even correctly label the resistor strength! What were they thinking. Only the 10K was labelled. Are we supposed to guess?

    Thank you, found the kit but, no instructions. My wife loves these trees. I learned a lot just watching you solder. I like how you solder one pin down then verify it's sitting right before doing the rest of the pins.Kinda like tack welding something and seeing if it's al square. Keep broadcasting!!

      The only thing you have to worry about is the values of the resistors:
      R1, R3, R5, R7 - 10KOhms (Brown, Black, Orange, Gold)
      R6 - 330 Ohms (Orange, Orange, Brown, Gold)
      R4 - 1KOhms (Brown, Black, Red, Gold)
      R2 - 2kOhms (Red, Black, Red, Gold)

    Great video!!!!
    Correct me if im wrong but are the pads on bottom of the two tree pieces where they connect at right angle supposed to be soldered together too like you did on the top ones? On the "trunk" of the tree?

    Wish you would have talked about what you were doing. My tree didn’t come with instructions so I watched and worked along with the video. I screwed up somewhere and only the tree topper light comes on. Oh well. That was a waste of time and money I’ll never get back.

      Did you make sure that all the LEDs are soldered in the correct direction? And the capacitors and transistors? It's been a long time since I built this now, so I've forgotten the details of it and so it's hard for me to make any suggestions beyond that at the moment :(

    How do I know which way the LEDs go?

    • @hoixthegreat8359
      @hoixthegreat8359 5 лет назад +4

      Positive side is longer than the negative side for the LEDs
      On the circuit the shorter side (the negative/anode) will go through the bit that is a square, and the longer side (positive/cathode) will go through what looks like a circle.
      It's kinda shown with the metal casing around it. You'll see what i mean.

    is every resistor different? and is there a positive and a negative side on the resistor

    • @zUltra3D
      @zUltra3D 4 года назад

      Yes, the resistor values are different from each other.
      R1, R3, R5, R7 - 10KOhms (Brown, Black, Orange, Gold)
      R6 - 330 Ohms (Orange, Orange, Brown, Gold)
      R4 - 1KOhms (Brown, Black, Red, Gold)
      R2 - 2kOhms (Red, Black, Red, Gold)
      And no, resistors have no polarity.

    There are 2 versions of this kit, one doesn't work because the resistors in series with the LEDs are 1000 ohms and should be 150 ohms. I have both kits, and replaced the resistors on the bad one, and it now works fine.

  • @rogertyler3237

    How do you know which resister is which?

    • @AndrewGillard
      @AndrewGillard  5 лет назад

      Resistors have coloured bands on them which indicate their value (usually the right-hand colour will be silver or gold for resistors you'll commonly encounter in kits like this). This page describes how those colour bands work: www.resistorguide.com/resistor-color-code/ Also take a look at this page on Digikey's website (they're a distributor of electronics components), which includes both a colour code chart and a calculator for easily determining the value of a resistor just by selecting the colours on it: www.digikey.co.uk/en/resources/conversion-calculators/conversion-calculator-resistor-color-code-4-band. Eventually most people learn to memorise what the colours mean, and can even start to just look at a resistor and immediately know its value - at least for ones that they commonly use - but to start out with there's nothing wrong with using charts and calculators :)
      Often the easiest way to determine the value of a resistor is to measure it using a multimeter. Those can be bought very cheaply these days, and while the cheap models don't have much/anything in the way of safety protection (so don't use them on mains voltage!), they're perfectly adequate for most hobbyist applications :)

      @@AndrewGillard But how do you know where the resistors go? Only the 10k ones are marked on the PCB. the rest are blank

    Do i need teh wire to do the soldering?

    • @brucegoatly
      @brucegoatly 6 лет назад +1

      If you mean the solder, then yes, you need to supply that yourself. Get solder with a flux core, as without it the solder won't stick to the board or components very well (if at all). You can buy either lead-free or lead-containing solder (the leaded variety has a lower melting point and might be easier to use, but in some parts of the world it could be hard to obtain). Be sure to avoid breathing in the fumes from the flux, because they're not good for you!
