Anyone else think it’s ironic that a video about dogs not liking being pet on their heads, shows dogs being pet on their heads in almost every single clip? And, might I add, every one of them look like they’re thoroughly enjoying it! 🤷‍♀️

CORRECTION: Dogs do love being petted on the head. The problem with it is when humans approach a dog from above them and try immediately to pet them on the head. That can be perceived by the dog as intimidating or aggressive and rightly so. When a human wishes to pet a dog, they should first allow the dog to come to them and not the other way around. Then, start by extending the hand to pet under the chin and cheek of the dog. If the dog likes it (and they'll let the human know), then you can gently make your hand move up to the head of the dog, down it's back, and pat the side around the shoulder. Slow, gentle deliberate movements. Again, dogs do like to be petted on the head by humans they have come to trust. They love it because it feels good. If it didn't feel good to them, they would pull away, tense up, or give other signs of discomfort. A good way to tell if a dog likes how you're petting him is if his mouth is open into what looks like a smile and the eyes are soft and half closed. The ears are also an indication. If the ears are back, flat, not up in an alert mode, this is a sign of a relaxed dog. AND I know all these things and much more because I have spent (and still do) countless hours with dogs of various breeds, sizes and temperaments.

I believe it's different from a dog to another. We have two, a Golden Retriever and a German Shepherd.
The retriever looooves being pet on the head. If you stop, he will move his whole head under your hand, telling you that he wants you to continue.
Same for the GS, but interestingly, his behaviour changed regarding ears. As a puppy he used to not alllow us near his ears at all (while still liking head pets). After he grew up, he started enjoying fingers playing in his ears so much that he makes facial expressions and sounds similar to a human who is really enjoying a professional back massage.
So, even for the same dog, their preferences change.

One of my dogs forcefully pushes her head into my hand, asking me to stroke her head and she definitely loves it. I always tell people not to stroke them on their head as their first interaction as it is intimidating and feels threatening to them. In fact, especially with children, I will ask them if I can do something and when they say yes, I will suddenly move my hand towards the top of their head. They usually flinch away. Then I ask how that felt; was that a bit scary? and they would say yes. I then explain how that is how a dog feels when the are suddenly patted on the top of their head and show them how to show the back of their hand and let the dog sniff it and all going well, to stroke the dog under the chin and around to their ears, over their shoulders and sides. Once a relationship is built and they trust you, and you are having a loving moment with them, that they enjoy being stroked on their heads. That is what I have found and I've lived with dogs almost my whole life, and I'm now in my 60s. I have a lot of dogs who live with me and they will take it in turns coming up on the sofa next to me, or on my lap, for cuddles.

Closed fist only so the dog can smell you first without fingers being at risk of being bitten (off). Really surprised by that clearly faulty advice.

This is true- the head is the most vulnerable place on a dog that they would naturally protect.. My recently adopted 5 yr old rescue Husky loves being petted everywhere EXCEPT the head, and- he cannot stand his paws being touched (or even looked at, it seems! :D ha...). He will create subtle moves to gently steer me away from his head, such as present me his backside to scratch.. ..(ha..).. :/ .. Anyway, he is an extremely anxious dog, but he melts with shoulder rubs/pets , and has dozed off to sleep within minutes a few times after this!

My dogs love having their head, scratched and petting the sides of their face, especially it’s not like when you meet a new dog that you go with your hand over their head, which isn’t that of aggression. This is the stupidest misinformation if your dog makes happy sounds when you’re petting it on its head or the side of its face was scratching its ears, you know it’s loving it if it leans towards you

I don't know if a dog wants you stroking his ears or muzzle, and I also doubt they enjoy being patted on the head but plenty of dogs sure seem to enjoy stroking on top of the head, provided you don't pet hard and pull the scalp back with each stroke. I think they enjoy slow gentle head petting.

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. I run a dog rescue/sanctuary. A no kill facility so babies that aren’t for what ever reason adopted out have a place to live out their lives running in the woods, swimming in a pond, creeks camping out with my wife and I. I’ve been around dogs for over 60 years. I’ve got dogs that have been thru horrible mistreatment by previous owners. I’ve never had one that didn’t give off every sign of loving to have a gentle, loving head pat. It’s just my opinion of course but I’ve been doing this a long time.

To a stranger dog... sudden touch in head make them feeling dominated and they become aggressive....but if we touch or approach the dog from behind there is definitely a bite will be happening.
So for a dog who is a stranger ,just let it trust you and sniff you...then you can touch it neck, back and head also...but never from the back.
For pet dogs...it is you who know best...but even sudden aproach from back make them insecure.
This video is not made by a dog lover ,its only for likes n share.

So when my Lab comes to me and pushes my hands upwards with her snout, and only stops when I scratch her head which she thoroughly enjoys, and when I stop, immediately uses her snout to get my hands to continue - I am a bad dog owner or my dog is a masochist? - this video is off key for owners who are imprinted on their dogs., and it should be noted that this is general rules only for how to approach petting of dogs unfamiliar to you.. Part of allowing you to be imprinted on your dog is that you know what they like, and would never do anything to make them uncomfortable, and with dog personalities and likes and dislikes being different it stands to reason that some dog like head scratching or petting of their head area by their imprinted owner.

You are sitting on grass or whatever, and your dog sits next to you without prompting, and leans against you. This makes it almost certain that they will actually like a hug. Don't overdo it though.
Patting on head. Again, this will vary from dog to dog, but it is not good practice to do it to stranger dog. Dogs can get headaches, especially an older dog. So gentle massaging their scalp can help. It depends on the dog, but if they have a good and healthy relationship with you, they will move away if they are not in the mood.
Your height and largeness is potentially a threat to any dog. Though you are still their leader, you don't need to be a tyrant. Know you dog well enough, and he/she knowing you well can mean some 'rules' like head petting, can be "broken".
Lie on the grass on your back, with the dog right next to you. On your back with your neck and belly exposed in front of your dog sends a signal to them that you trust them with your life. The "an owner has to play the "Alpha dog" is sheer nonsense. I have NEVER known a dog to take advantage of it. You become more of a pal, a playmate, and can foster the idea that you are merely an older and wiser brother or sister, and not some arrogant tyrant. Use the "command" voice only for emergencies. [Such as a speeding car or motorbike, or suspicious food left on the ground which could be poisoned. Rare but it does happen]. Rescue dogs and ex-stray dogs will have developed a scavenging instinct. So even if the food is not poisoned, it could be full of harmful pathogens if it has been sitting there for a time.

You're right and wrong. Absolutely: never pet a dog you don't know before asking it's owner! (2024 and we still have to tell this, really?)
And indeed it's fundamental to realize there is a big difference between a dog just undergoing and it enjoying something.
Maybe some dog owners would be badly surprised...
But your wrong to generalize: dogs all have their own character, some will love to be petted on the head, some definitely not...

Silly video to be honest. You can pet your dog on their heads, absolutely, no problem. What you can not do is reach for their head immediately. You'll see the dog pull away. Let them sniff your hand first, crouch down to get closer to their level, pet the shoulders and chest and then make your way to the head. Nothing wrong with that at all.

What are you suppised to do if children or other people touch your dogs head..yell at them? So dont agree. I dont do it to dogs I dont know but others do. So ...

What a load of bs. If it's your dog they most likely love it nut probably not from strangers. Dogs love scratches especially behind the ears and mine comes to me to get head scratches and absolutely loves hugs too. He always comes to get both.

I don't appreciate some of my dog's behaviors. She can dang well put up with wherever I pet her.
That said, she's fine with everywhere except her tail which sends her into a game of jump n spin and the base of her tail on her back where I suspect she was hit before by a previous human who threw her away, before I found her bony skinny on the street.
