A great portion of that great sound is, that you have to play pretty aggressively, hit it hard. This and maybe a Bass Driver will unleash the beastly power of this SOB.

Awesome dude, fellow Spector head here and those early Haz preamps were gnarly as a motherfucker. Newsted's tone was really compressed a lot, had lots of fullness and yet bite on top of it. Incredible!
I also found it awesome that you actually played Jason's bass line properly and did it justice! \m/
I also don't use a pick but the way Newsted attacks the strings just puts everything over the top!

What a tone. I am after Spector bass. Your vid confirms that pickup setup (PJ) is enought , what I need and what I love in Spector basses. A lot of heavy bassist use PJ setup.

This sounds AWESOME! I play a Spector Legend Classic 5-string myself, dual passive EMG soapbars and different preamp but all maple (except for the fretboard) and I'd like to get close to something like that!
What kind of strings did you use for this and how did you set the bass as far as pickup selctor and onboard preamp cut/boost go?
I used a MXR 80 Bass DI, a distortion pedal Littleass kicker by DMT and a Pre Sonus Comp 16. Let's go : output - color on, clean volume = flat / distortion - volume = 8 / blend = flat / trigger = 6.5 / gain = 0 / gate = on. Bass / Mid / Treble = flat. I used Daddario XL EXL 170 0.45/100.

There was not a set up to did it. I used a MXR M80 D.I., a presonus compressor and a custom bass drive pedal DMT Little ass kicker.

Great cover but its not the 6 string bass that Jason played live
But he recorded Sad But True in a Spector. In the DVD A Year and a Half you can see Jason using Spectors recording Sad but True and the tone is almost similar to this video. Then he used the 6 string Alembic, live.

I hate how bass distortion gets lost in the mix though
The trick is to keep the low end frequencies compressed and clean. Then distort the treble frequencies and leave uncompressed.
