- So you part ways with a coach for his lack of success in the NCAA tournament. And then you go get a new head coach, who WAIT FOR IT, has ZERO wins in the NCAA Tournament EVER!
Not only is he 0-2 as a head coach in the NCAA tournament, but he did not even win a single game as an ASSISTANT coach over the course of his career in the tourney.
That guy you Kentucky fans ran out of town after losing to St. Peters & Oakland? That guy went to 7 Elite 8's his first 10 seasons at UK. He's been to multiple final fours, national championship games, and he actually won a National Title. So when Cal beats you at Rupp this year, and goes onto have WAY more success than UK will have in the next decade, you will not get any sympathy from anyone.

This little guy needs to go back and do his homework on what Mark Pope has done, and what Cal hasn't been able to do.
In Cals 32 years of being a head coach, he has only won ONE national championship. And he wasn't getting anywhere with his one and done mentally that he would not change. All he cared about was getting "his kid's" into the NBA or some other Professional league, just so he was able to bring in the next ones.

Cal has been losing to below bottom coaches for years.
First off, it wasn't a lifetime coaching contract, it was a 10 year extension. Second, it was in 2019 that he signed the extension.
Two weeks later and this video already hasn't aged well.
The fans did not push Calipari out. They mostly loved him. Big money contributors to the program put the necessary pressure on Calipari's departure. John Calipari is a good man and one hell of a coach. Mark Pope is also a very good man and a fantastic coach. He will do just fine!
If you guys had to listen to Calipari’s 💩 for the last 5 years. Since signing the so called lifetime contract. He takes Kentucky to a 9 win season. 3 first round bounces from the SEC tournament, 2 first round bounces from the NCAA tournament. All while have a top 5 recruiting class every season and national player of the year for one of those seasons. You can’t over talent Calipari’s incompetence.
I'm pretty sure you guys are right that Coach Pope played for Rick Pitino sometime in the past.... I'm 96 percent sure they won a title together. Also, hopefully those fans at Arkansas don't complain too much if Coach Cal doesn't win any tournament games for 4 or 5 years with the top recruits in the country.... They might force him to resign and take another job where the university boosters are offering huge NIL money...

How many games have you played in and won? I got aggravated with Cal, because he wasn't any help to the mostly freshman and I got tired of looking at his pouty face. So we can't do any worse than we had.
Never underestimate the power of Mark Pope. He was highly recommended by Rick Pitino when Rick left Kentucky for the Celtics. Pope is the only Rhodes Scholar coaching in D-1 basketball. He was the Captain of a National Championship team. In a mere two weeks he has recruited an awesome group from the portal! I loved having Calipari at Kentucky, but at a time when big money controls coaching hires, Mark Pope was a great replacement! Don't worry, with Pope brilliance and the "Kentucky Brand", Kentucky basketball will do just fine! Great job Mitch Barnhart!

And you're right. When Calipari left, a bunch of 5 star recruits left too. Like all the 5 star recruits that leave every year after not getting far in the tournament the past 5 seasons. It's a stretch to say that the incoming class for next year would have done better.
If it takes a few years to rebuild and there's more 3/4 star recruits staying for 3/4 years developing and getting better as there were 5 star recruits wearing the jersey for 6 months, most Kentucky fans are ok with that. These days 1 and done players don't get it done in March. Player development and the transfer portal does. This video will age as well as Velveeta in the sun.
You totally underestimate the abilities of Mark Pope. Mark Pope was the captain of the 1978 NCAA championship game. When Pitino left Kentucky he recommended Mark Pope as a replacement. Mark Pope is a Rhodes scholar and played 10 years in the pros. He is the only Rhodes scholar coaching D-1 Basketball. He did a great job at BYU, which is extremely hard to recruit players to. They have many disliked rules including early curfew, no alcohol anywhere and no Coffee on campus! In two weeks, Pope has really recruited more talent than anyone shopping in the portal. Kentucky fans are super pleased with Popes aggressive and successful recruiting. His on the floor coaching is much like Rick Pitino with an added flair. I loved the Calipari years at Kentucky, but do
Wait and see! Mark Pope is awesome. To recruit at BYU successfully says a lot. He was the the recommended Coach to replace Pitino when Pitino went to Boston. He has a very high IQ, was captain of the KY National Championship with Jeff Shepard, played 9 years in the pros and has a passion for Kentucky Basketball. I liked Calipari a lot and wanted him to stay, but Mark Pope will do just fine.
Mark Pope finished higher in the Kenpom than Calipari 3 of the last 5 years. One of those coaches had NBA talent all over the roster, and the other had a merry band of mormons willing to sign honor codes. That should tell you everything you need to know.
Calipari was a great coach ten years ago, but that guy is gone. It happens sometimes. Look at the end of Bob Knight's career. Sometimes even legends fade out.
So when did Pope win a NCAA game? Never. I have been a UK fan for over 50 years. Pope as UK coach is stupid, stupid, stupid. HE HAS NEVER DONE ANYTHING!!!

Cal cannot coach period 3 coaches in the sec said before the season started that they wasn't worried about Cal because he's ran the same plays for the last 15 years. Pope is a great x's and o's coach.

As a Kentuckian, imo Cal was not using his players in the best way or giving them the plays that would benefit their playstyles the most. The best example is having your best shooter (who arguably is shepard) not starting as well as your best driver/ball handler not starting either which was Dillingham. Who does that??? Don't get me wrong reeves is good but he was hit or miss at times and the rebounding when he would miss just wasn't there. You had often the most rebounds coming from Shepard (the shortest guy) at times. This tells me Shepard didn't need to be the point guard at all. He needed to be freed up for the 3 and inside shots. The point guards should have been Dillingham and DJ should have been the back up guy. Ugonna Onyenso was under used from the beginning who had standout games in 2019. Aidoo didn't get enough playtime and could have helped on defense against the Oakland 3 point shooter. Cal talked about bringing in two bigs and switching things up when they lost the SEC tourney. Then he did none of that and the only change he made was he put back in Trey Mitchel who was under preforming. Now he did do better in that game but he isn't known as a defensive player. It's not the first time Cal has made poor decisions and played his golden boys and failed to put someone in the game who would be a difference maker for the team on defense. Back in 2017 he said he "forgot" about Nick Richards after benching him for doing something wrong. Yeah sat him down towards the beginning of the 2nd half and didn't bring him back in at all. We lost that game by a bucket which was a simple jumper that could have been blocked but we didn't have a big on the floor in that moment. Kentucky hasn't had two top defenders in the NCAA since 2019. Defense wins basketball games so regardless of Mark Pope not winning with previous lower budget schools...If he is doing somewhat the opposite of what Cal was focusing on then maybe there's a chance for Kentucky to be a factor in the tournaments this year. Now I will say that the cats probably will need a couple of 7 foot + bigs to fill the roster or Kentucky may be in trouble. BTW Cal was already negotiating leaving during our tournament and didn't decide to tell us until after when he was trying to get players to go with him so he wouldn't feel as bad for job shopping during our tournament time.

he is not a great coach. cal is about getting player into the NBA, player that would still be in the NBA even if they would have went to a mid-major college. Cal have had a top 5 class every year he have been at UK, with only 1 championship to show for it (Kentucky got lucky to win the title that year). so with all of these top classes, Cal had miss the ncaa tment 2 times. 1 trip to the NIT where they lose in the first round of the NIT as a 1 seed. then the next time when cal post a 9-16 record also the worst record since the 1920's.

As a cats fan i will miss Calipari. But having new faces ever year is tough. No chemistry, and that doesn't go well when March rolls around. I do think Pope will be a good coach, and if we can get some shooters from the portal we will drop sooooo many 3s. You saw what happened to Purdue. Big man ball just isn't enough vs a decent 3 point shooting team. This is where i think we will shine. From the 3. Aswell our defense should be better. This video aged well. lol NOT! Pope signed the #2 portal class and will start 5 upper classmen (4 of them in the top 150) that have all won game in the tournament. Not to mention he has assembled one of the best coaching staffs in the nation. AND Pope is a significant upgrade in the X’s and O’s. Sounds like a significant upgrade to me. Question is, are you going to eat that crow? If you don’t, I can’t see how you can take yourself serious let alone anyone else.

I respect everyone’s opinion…. But you might want to do a bit more research on things before making a show …. There more deeper things to situation to much to mention here … Cal is not an X and O guy he lost his guy in 2018 that did that for him . The way he dose things can get a stable team year after year. You can’t loose 8 or 9 guys every year and start over every year … Kentucky became a NBA training camp for 1 year… you only get to see 50 to 65 percent of players potential and no core team returning, that’s hard to do every year. There much much more on both sides of situation to discuss here .

But last 4-5 have been sub par with the amount of talent he has and his X’s and O’s have been bad with no mid game adjustments. Just got stagnant he even said himself it’s a 10 year job he stayed too long. Don’t forget he sat down with the athletic director days before and said he is staying to BBN only to leave a couple days later. He wasn’t fired, he left after slapping the fans in the face with bad losses, then lying to them saying he’s staying.
