I appreciate the time and effort you put into making these videos. A quick question, have you ever measured out (by weight) partial batches of developer? For instance make a quart of XTOL rather than a gallon. You have introduced some developers I would like to try. But I would never use them up before they went bad if I made the complete packet of the developer.
No ive never tried that! I’ve thought about it though. Even the batch of XTOL I just recently mixed up, I don’t know if I’ll get through all of it before it goes bad! It’s worth a try. Can’t go wrong if it’s measured correctly I suppose. Also thank you for watching! It’s much appreciated
@@TheNegative if I do it perhaps I will do comparisons and share the results with you. First roll of first batch or something like that. I have some Arista which is perfect for this kinda thing. Not expensive and I don’t photograph anything I care about with it.
Xtol is so cheap that I just make the 5 liters and split it between a gallon jug and a 32oz bottle. Then I just use it one shot and if it goes bad before I use it all it doesn't really matter to me because I get a lot of rolls developed before that happens and it only costs 15$ for 5 liters.
Doesn't look that different in this example. Would be more interesting to test the complete opposite developers to each other. For example D-19 VS POTA on the same film.
I mix the two 100ml Xtol stock+400ml water with 5ml of Rodinal, a pinch of Borax. I particularly like Pan F and Tmax 400 with the mix.
How does this affect development times compared to only Xtol or only Rodinal?
Some film just doesn't work well with Rodinal. E.g. HP5 comes out too grainy.

Xtol has better speed, less grain, and better sharpness
