The good thing is that those bowls are relatively safe. Unless you are breaking them or the glaze is flaking off and you ingest or inhale it, you are pretty safe. In fact, you could likely eat off that Fiestaware bowl every day for a lifetime and as long as you don't damage the glaze or use it for very acidic foods, you would likely be just fine. The same goes for the uranium glass. The other thing to keep in mind is that the levels of radiation being given off by the Fiestaware bowl are very low in the world of radiation. It is definitely all about exposure level and time together to calculate the dose but even then a cumulative dose of 100 millisieverts per year is low enough to generally not show a meaningful rise in cancer risk. You need around 1 sievert per year to have a 5 in every 100 person chance of getting fatal cancer in later years.
That bowl is not dangerous. I probably would not want to eat out of it, but wouldn't be that worried if I did, especially if the bowl didn't chip and get a piece of that glazing in my body. The danger of low-levels of radiation is really overstated. I used to work for an energy company with nuclear power plants. There were a number of guys who worked there with me who did things like smoke cigarettes but then refused to get the DOE "red badge" clearance to go on the nuclear site. One of the executives had a piece of a rod encased in glass sitting on his desk. I live in PA in a hot spot for Radon. Millions of people live here. Flying exposes you to higher than background radiation. I hope Rose is not too worried about it.
Very nice of you to be helping this woman out. I have a complete set of vintage Fiesta dinnerware, plates, bowls, saucers, coffee cups, all in cobalt blue. I was always going to build a Geiger counter so now I have a good excuse to do so. I just looked up what this stuff is worth and I am amazed. These belonged to my parents and they got them in the early 50's. I ate from them as a kid in the 60's and 70's then later in the 80's my Mom gave them to me and I have been using them ever since. Might be time to get rid of them even though I am in my 60's now but, better late then never.
This is an adorable little house. I lived in a similar house for 35 years here in Jax. It was called a hurricane house. A small cinder block two bedroom house. Only problem was it had a flat roof. Basically indestructible. It was decked out with old appliances from my grandma. What was awesome was the Philco refrigerator from I’m guessing the 40s. It still ran fine when we moved it out in 2006. One of those with the big silver pull handle.
Flat roofs are the worst! Standing water, leaks, etc. Been there done that. LOL Some older refrigerators last decades, I bet the newer ones don't. Thanks for watching!
I wouldn't call 20ish microsieverts as really high.. Hell, a CAT scan is around 7,000 millisieverts (700,000 microsieverts). Her dish is .024 millisieverts. The "Radium Girls" would have been getting sick from heavy metal poisoning more than anything else. Since they were putting the brushes in their mouths and hence, swallowing the radium..
Hi Mark. What I said was based on a comparison to normal background radiation. Yes, a CT, transatlantic flight are much higher than the fiesta bowl. When the radium girls ingested the radium, it accumulated in their bones like calcium does. As the radium decays, it gives off radon gas, which is known to cause lung cancer. Thanks for watching!
I know that trucks full of ceramic/stone stuff have a lot of problems at radiation scanning stations. Even if it wasn't true at this point I'd have just lied to Rose that it couldn't have hurt her at all just for her piece of mind
Super cool man. I have a friend he’s 80 he has hundreds of pieces of uranium glassware. He gave a lamp a few weeks ago. Man I wish you could read the show room where it’s all on display.
Reminds me when at school in 1970. Physics class studying radiation. We had Alpha, Beta, Gamma sources which were stored in lead canisters and handled with 30cm tongs. The Geiger counter was on the bench and the sources in their box, just the normal background count. The Head of Science came into the room to talk to our teacher at the bench and the Geiger counter went haywire - it was his watch!

The downside to all of the safety sally stuff today is that nobody really pays any attention to the warnings. Like 1/2 the stuff I buy now has a warning telling me the state of California has determined that it is a carcinogen . Littera lauto-parts are now coming with these warnings. Their very ubiquitousness of all the warnings makes the real warnings about real problems fade into the background noise of our lives.
The lead exposure is BS. People have handled lead for years in the plumbing trade, electronics, and fishing! Lead sinkers. I don't see any risk to handling lead, as long as you wash your hands after handling it.
That's the key, washing your hands well after contact. You obviously don't want to ingest lead. We always wash our hands well after a good time at the shooting range just to remove all the lead.
Oh, one more thing. Most people don't know this but I worked on cigarette machinery that used Strontium 90 to measure cigarette density and adjust trimming knives accordingly. I think they use cap measuring devices now. We wore dosimeter badges when working on them.
Also fluoride in public water is not good yet still done. another example of how people know its bad but dont bother. Even with tooth paste it says call dr if swallowed which is close the to the amount of tap water for a day.
Hello Doug, Glad your doing well. Catching up, I have been super busy lately. I understand Cobalt blue glass can be radioactive. It's cool when you feature our favorite celebrity, Radioactive Rose. Last day of Winter, the 19th, Happy Spring. All the Best, C.
Thanks Cass! I know people have a life besides YT, including me. :-) Never knew about the cobalt glass, it must contain cobalt-60. That's Rose's new name. Lol
Great video man, I love uranium glass, the colors you can get from the uranium oxide are really striking especially the fiestaware, glad rose gave it too you be a shame if it had gotten thrown out. Glad her fridge situation worked out.
You may want to consider keeping your counters inside of a disposable, seal-able baggie, especially when you are using it, especially if you are going to allow it to come into contact with the subject material in order to prevent the device from becoming contaminated.

Nicely handled, keep stuff about radiation simple for folks raised during the cold war. Strange how attitudes towards things change through the times, radioactive materials have gone from healthy to lethal to being useful in medicine etc, good thing you didn't check the smoke detectors 😏
@@electronicsNmore wow, I'm going to check out the video, my grandpa was in R&D with the MoD in the 50's 60's and possibly 70's 😏 I'd ask him about stuff and he'd give me books on the subject matter at 50's and 60's college level reading and say "when you understand the information in the book we can talk, I wasn't even in junior high 🤣
Oh yeah. The nuclear engineers at my school would give tours of the research reactor building and had a table of stuff you would find around the house and a Geiger counter. High on the list was some ceramic dish from south of the border and a banana and hottest was a Coleman lantern mantel. Don't know if the last one is still true.
Yes, lantern mantles are radioactive. In the late 1800's they developed the thorium gas mantle which helps them glow (incandence) better. It was a boon to the gas lighting industry. The same process is used today. My brother worked for ComEd as a nuclear chemist for 40 years. He once set off a bunch of alarms while exiting the plant and they discovered he had left a package of Coleman mantles in his pocket (he camps a lot)! That mantle is stored in a locker at the Zion nuclear plant (in Illinois) to this day as "dangeeous material". although they are not dangerous enough to concern you as a normal user, they are considered as nuclear waste in the industry. Totally bizarre. So yes, they ARE considered radioactive.
I've heard of this type of situation years ago, but this is very educational, so good job. You did your good Samaritan deed for the day with Rose on this. I thought you would be adding a light to the Frig! :)
