Celtic 2-0 Real Madrid, European Cup Q/F 1980

  • A glorious night for Celtic as they beat a Real Madrid side that had won La Liga in four of the last five years (indeed, that season, they would make it five out of six). Unfortunately for the Bhoys, their two-goal lead proved to be insufficient - Los Blancos, with Englishman Laurie Cunningham among their number, came roaring back at the Bernabeu to advance 3-2 on aggregate. Arthur Montford and Ian St John commentate.

    Was there as a 13 yo English boy in the jungle. Went as a birthday present from a family of Celtic fans we lived near in Burnley. Had a family of Rangers fans nearby and a family of Partick fans too. A lot of Scottish families lived in Burnley. I also remember a couple of years earlier Burnley playing Celtic in the anglo scottish cup where there was a lot of trouble. But that was football growing up in the 70's. Anyway thank you to the McCormack family for a memory i'll never forget

    I remember being at this game. At that time, Celtic weren't very good, but, this was a great game and we had the beating of them once that first goal went in. Towards the end of the first half of the game in Madrid, we were the better side and had two great chances to increase our lead. Then, in the last minute of the first half, they got a truly dodgy free kick inside the box and scored. That was it for Celtic and we lost 3_0. But for that stupid first half goal, Celtic would have made the semi final. As I say, they were not great that year, but neither were any of the other teams that year, so, you never know. Or maybe l'm just romantasising a bit much.

      paul i remember after going out in the 2nd leg our season fell apart in april. losing twice at celtic park to aberdeen, losing to dundee utd 3-0 and dundee thrashed us 5-1, it killed our chances of the title which we threw away, we ended on a high with the scottish cup win over rangers. great memories of childhood all the same.

    • @paulhagen5645
      @paulhagen5645 4 года назад +2

      Yes I do remember that cup final. It did, kind of make up, a bit, for all that happened that season. Then, all that nonsense happened at the end of the game. However, Celtic did win the league the next season.

    • @ianmacdonald3782
      @ianmacdonald3782 2 года назад

      Absolutely agree! We were effectively robbed in Madrid as it was never a free kick at the end of the first half. I had a real sinking feeling when we lost the goal and we may well have held on otherwise. A good example of how a goal can change a tie.

    In the 60s,70s and 80s celtic,Aberdeen,rangers and Dundee utd could beat the best in Europe home or away.
    Regularly in the later stages of european competitions and winning things.
    Such a pity how money has ruined football for smaller countries.
    UEFA and FIFA are complicit in this in allowing the bigger countries to dominate,allowing the top 4 in the big leagues automatic champions league qualification.
    In other words,it's blatant elitism.
    Not to mention sky sports giving Scottish football a pittance compared to the English Premier league.

    This was a great Celtic European Night, but the greatest European Night for Celtic was in 1970 at Hamden Park against Leeds United when Jimmy Johnstone ran Leeds defense, and especially the great Terry Cooper to the ground. I watched that game live on TV, and that was the first time that I could feel the Hampden Roar. The Noise was deafening, and Celtic had a FANTASTIC T-E-A-M and won the game 2-1 (Big John Hughes and Bobby Murdoch scored) coming from behind in the second half and winning 3-1 on aggregate. Unfortunately, they didn't play well in the final that year except for their Goal Keeper Williams who was phenomenal, and lost to Feyenoord 2-1 in Extra Time.

      Michael Johnston The financial arrangements changed in the game and clubs from small countries like Scotland and Holland were declassified and diminished. Vested interests may be against it, but there's no definitive reason why the situation couldn't change again, and this time in Celtic's favour. I wonder when these ape chantings started in european football.
      Because if you watch portuguese games from the sixties and seventies against spanish or british teams you dont hear anything. Or french teams of those days also had french carrebean players. Did pele ever experience such in the intercontinental cup games against the italians in the sixties?
      One doesnt hear anything

    I think all the Celtic players were Scottish in that team ,and the Lisbon Lions were all from a 30 mile radius of Glasgow ,same with the rangers team of 71 that won the former ECWC all came from Glasgow

    Two of that Celtic team eventually took the step up to play for the Accies. This was good training for them.

      @Jackbone John most Scots and Irish dont think of themselves as British if they do it's Scottish/Irish 1st British 2nd regardless of the political geography

      @Uncle Betty like they'd leave Europe in a jiffy lol the majority as you put it was only just a majority many believe that vote was rigged we know for a fact the 1st Indy referendum was rigged. To say that the Scots created the union is not the case it was king James who created it yes he was Scottish but the Scottish people had no say in it. You're actually proving my point most English like Scots and Irish think British 2nd

      @Uncle Betty I'm not trying to convince you of anything I doubt very much that you keep up with Scottish news to say sour grapes? Smacks of ignorance but i wouldn't expect you to keep up with Scottish news. King James created the union on the advice of his advisors in England do some research on king James the 1st of England/6th of Scotland you'll see what im saying

      @Uncle Betty lol this is why I said do some research on king James who said all his advisors were English stop making broad generalisations that you clearly know nothing about
