Couldn't agree more. My biggest pet peeve with demos with lots of talking isn't even the talking per se (because sometimes it's valuable), but when there is meant to be a comparison of tones, but the clips are a minute apart, broken up by a long tirade.

@@sega62syou aren't lying because I am 100% guilty of not practicing and getting better 😂😂. I don't do "demos" but I'll put up sound samples. I am a drummer first but I dabble in guitar and bass but my son is a worship guitarist and is good at it, he did everything right when it came to practicing and progress very fast as a 14 yr old when he first started and is not 26 years old. It's a night and day difference when he and I play the same thing, he has precision and clarity and I don't.
I am partial to Gibsons, but I really want to find a fender that I just fall in love with. I’ve only found one, and it belongs to my cousin and he doesn’t want to sell it.
TBH I think this video makes a good argument why you really don't. While there is a difference, it's not nearly as substantial as some make it out to be, especially to the ears of the average listener and in a full band setting.

But in term of technicallity tele from what I know uses one broadcaster and one single coil (altho someone told me they use 2 tele single coil after cbs took over) whereas LP uses humbucker on both side. The differences will be more noticeable when played on clean..
Ten years ago I hated single coils, but damn there is nothing like a Telecaster. I love my Les Paul, but the Telecaster is the best electric guitar ever made.
This is how AB comparison videos should be crafted. The perfect editings make it so much easier to hear the differences, even with standard phone speakers. Brilliant job!
The les paul has a slightly more full tone and the tele has more top end. They don't sound massively different though. Explains why led zeppelin 1 fooled everyone into thinking it was a Lp!
Exactly what I thought! The Gibson has a more powerful, fuller sound (better pick-ups, I suppose), but the Tele is preferable, when you need clean, high notes.
Relative to other common electric guitar types, they're pretty much on opposite ends of design philosophy. So many critical design choices just go in opposite directions: pickups, woods, scale length. The only further comparison would be a hollow body against a Strat. There are way more guitars that will sound closer to a LP than a Tele, including semi-hollow and hollows, and most things with humbuckers.
Tele and LP is the best combo you can have in a band, they are meant for each other. I own both a CS Nocaster and a R7. They are like brothers. The Tele got the clean and clear, the LP got that meaty and full tone. That combo is just epic!
Back in the 90's a punk band that had a LP paired with a Strat or Tele always sounded good because there was that different sound between them that worked really well.
Favorite part was both together. They really do sound great together. Both are amazing guitars, they just have different applications, but you could use either for anything. There’s no rules in Rock N Roll. Do what you think sounds best and dare to be different. I don’t want to live in a world where you have to have this for that and vice versa. Break the rules of the norm, and make some great music. After all that’s how some of the biggest guitar players got that big by being different and using different equipment in different ways etc, and by making music outside the norm of that current time.
For me, a telecaster always wins in a mix. Yes it has a “thinner” sound. But it always seems like when I’m mixing a Les Paul, I end up editing and high passing it until it basically sounds like a telecaster. Telecasters just seem to cut through and not muddy up a song all on their own.
200% with you. Telecaster's frequencies have less "competition" than Les Paul's. BTW, I love LPs, but I always long for the versatility and "toughness" of a Tele. And its neck pickup is the most underrated tone in guitar history.
The difference is... the humbuckers... well... buck the hum... so at least in a recording situation there might be an advantage to high passing the HB's.
Love the way you switched between the tele and lp for each segment. Its like the tele and lp accepted each other's differences and were singing the same song together... Really cool and heartwarming.

Exactly why I purchased the PRS Hallow body II w/Piezo. Seriously thinking of swapping out the neck PU for a single. Or I could just split the coils with a push/pull.
Austin Wilson I’ve personally never liked the sound of a coil split humbucker. It always seems to be lacking character and it’s too thin. Then again maybe I haven’t played good ones

I was thinking of a Gretsch Filter'Tron PU but I'm not sure if you can split them. www.gretschguitars.com/support/specs-explained/pickups. I just looked it up. Not recommended but these PU's you can. I’m a Fender guy but I love the sound of a Les Paul through a cranked Orange or Marshall. Having said that it’s amazing how versatile a Telecaster can be. On picked cleans it’s peerless and with a bit of eq you could get the distorted tones pretty close to the Gibsons’.
Everybody wants LPs in early years or youth id say then as time progresses on, you unknowingly start falling in love with Tele and next thing you know, you understand how a simple flat block of wood looking Tele is the perfect wife.
I got a tele and a few days later played a used Gibson LP for the first time. My tele is now for sale on reverb so I might acquire the LP before it’s too late.
I went the other way. Only reason I would use a Strat or Tele is for the clean neck. But then years ago I got a Les Paul Special with p90s to go with my Standard and never looked back.
@@ferox965 I don’t get people that talk about “the clean neck” on a Strat like that’s something that can’t be done on any guitar, even if you have to change the pickups. I buy a guitar based mainly off look and feel, and pop the pickups I want in it. Sure, some guitars are capable of providing some character to the tone, but to me it’s definitely a lot about pickups, hollow or solid body, and the fretboard.

LP players often get a Tele as well. The tele has a familiar feel and is capable of dishing out a wide variety of tones from mild to wild. I own and love examples of both.
To go with my Standard I bought a Strat. Only thing I ever used it for was neck cleans. Got rid of it and got a Les Paul Special with P90s and never looked back.

The bridge pickup on a Les Paul sounds the best for rock stuff. The neck pickup on a tele sounds the best for clean sounds. And tracking both of them together sounds perfect.
The tone depends on the amp settings, you can make a fender heavy by increasing the gain , I personally think the neck profile is what you need to look for in a guitar instead of how it sounds cause it needs to be comfortable for you to play , as for how it sounds you can easily adjust that with a good amp
the fender tele has single coil pick ups,no matter how much gain you have it’ll never sound as beefy as a humbucker,that being said,the tele isn’t made for high gain situation,it excels at what single coil pick ups are made for
Awesome video! I’ve always felt that Telecasters were so underrated and thought of only as a guitar for Country music. I have 3 beautiful telecasters. It’s the guitar that I feel most comfortable playing. I had a 2016 Les Paul HP standard. Gorgeous guitar! Played incredible but, it just never felt right. I would always go for my telecaster. Funny! How a certain guitar will suit a person. So… I just guess that it’s written in stone somewhere that I only like telecasters and that’s fine with me.
I love both for different reasons, but one thing I love about a Les Paul that you can't do with a Tele is control the volume of each pickup. That really lets you put a lot of dynamics in your playing.
I think you can notice a characteristic difference in tone between 3:03 and 3:29. I beleive Tele is the winner. I own both, a 67' Tele and 72' Gold Top.
Your videos are always top shelf!! I'm a gibson lifer, but have recently gotten a Tele. In a full band mix the tele really opens the bottom end up for the bass player. In a two guitar band, one LP and one Tele is pure magic.

This needs to be how every comparison is done. I know for sure now I need both a single coil and humbucker guitar thanks to you playing multiple different styles. A1 video. You should do similar videos comparing other picks up, like active vs passive.
This is an excellent demo, well done. My opinion, perfectly illustrates why a Tele with a humbucker in the neck is the most versatile guitar you can buy.
I don't agree. Tele is a distinct sound great for certain things and not so great for others. Les Paul has a much bigger sound and warmer tone, but isn't as good on some of the cleaner sounds where twang is needed. I feel like a strat with a humbucker in the bridge is the most versatile. You get the weight and warmth while still getting the twang when needed. Just my opinion. I'm a Gibson guy first.
@@paulandre3250 Small correction: a Tele neck pickup is not a lipstick. It's a smaller single-coil pickup with a cover on top. A lipstick pickup is what you find on a Danelectro. They are constructed very differently.
The ultra tele has noiseless pickups and the S1 switch which wires them in series and makes it fatten up nicely. It’s become my dream guitar, it has the benefits of a humbucker guitar but maintains the look and sound of a standard tele. There is also the performer telecaster hum which is exactly like you described, you can even split the hb for single coil tone. I am a fan of it but I like the ultra a bit more because it looks like a standard tele.
@@paulandre3250 Well you need 4 Teles. One with a 51 Nocaster in the neck, one with a Twisted Tele neck, one with a P-90 in the neck, and one with a Wide Range Humbucker in the neck.
The clarity and twangy character of the Telecaster played at the same with the les paul have that ACDC vibe. Similar to an SG and a Gretsch. Those guitars sound amazing layered like that. They really compliment each other
Goes to show that Amp tone=90% of the overall tone, especially with crunch or distortion. Clean the difference is more apparent, but both are sending a nearly identical signal into the amp. Feel has always mattered more to me than the different tone you can get from a LP vs a Fender. I love them both.
True if you are setting to get the sound of an amp or certain effect rather then the characteristics of the guitar then that's what you're going to get, each set up should compliment and try to bring the guitars particular tone and characteristics thru, that telecaster with the proper rig would sound totally different but no matter what you play will sound the same if you're rig is set up with a lot of gain and effects to give that hard rock or metal distorted sound.
The LP sound is more consistent and there is a noticeable low-note modulation when the diphthong is played. On Tele we see a more differentiated sound of each string with a clear emphasis on the high frequency harmonics of thin strings. Not all amplifiers like LP and therefore the sound is darker on Orange. If you need to emphasize the drive and show the filling of a small number of instruments, then LP is preferable, and if you need to lead a rhythm part, then there is no substitute for Tele.
I have both and love them both. Musically neither is "better"; they're just different. However in playing feel, the Tele feels like an extension of my hands while I feel I have to fight the LP sometimes. On clean tones, the Tele is sort of clean and pure while the LP is full and rich. It's sort of Bach and Mozart vs Beethoven and Wagner.

Well I mean you could get a les Paul with humbuckers that also have coil splitting. A humbucker is essentially two single coils so it cuts on of the coils out of the signal to replicate a single coil. No it’s not going to be as good as an actual single coil usually but it does the trick. Also a lot of 70s style teles have humbuckers
They are great separate, but when you put the two together, nothing beats it. The Les Paul fills in the low end the tele is missing, and the tele adds a nice high end sparkle to the sound, making the guitar best mix.
After watching this, I realized that what affects your tone the most is, besides your technique, the amp you use. Both guitars sounded very close to each other, in spite of noticeable differences like wood, pickups, scale length, etc.
My two all-time favorite guitars! I probably use my Tele more than my LP due to its versatility and durability, but both are amazing and worthy of their reputation. Great video!

We need a series dedicated to showcasing combinations of guitars. I've been diving into how two different guitars can compliment eachother. I've found a lot of success with a tele, and a 335.
I don't know what you did on tone knob. But clearly les paul brighter as it can and the tele darker as it can get. So They sounded very close. My guitars sounds are like night and day side to side . With both tones all in there's 100% difference here.

This single video completely confirmed my decision made a couple years ago when I almost purchased a LP. Now I’m happy I went with my Tel Performer with that splittable humbucker. Check one out if you’re on the fence
10 years ago I decided to only have one guitar again like I did in the 70s. It is a Telecaster. It has Texas special pickups with a grease bucket tone knob. It does everything.
My takeaway is that they are both beautifully sounding instruments and one of the best sounds in the video was when they were playing together at the same time… like two lovers whispering sweet nothings to eachother. 😏
Session musicians usually use telecaster because it’s not as powerful as the Gibson so it won’t outshine the vocalist and it’s easier to mix it to blend in with a lot of background instruments in my experience. There is no better or worse model. Both are wonderful guitars.
It's closer than I expected. That being said, I like the Les Paul better. The Telecaster has it's place though. The Telecaster (not to distorted) cuts through a mix, where's the Les Paul can be a bit muddy. Awesome comparison.
Awe dude you gotta try a tele. It definitely needs time to grow on you but it does. If it is something else I’d rather play other than a LP it’s a tele. All I got now is a tele with some hot pick ups and it rocks. But to each his own it’s what works later stay safe
I actually started out with a LP style guitar (Tokai) and added a Telecaster to my collection last week. Fender player series telecaster (made in Mexico). Would recommend getting it from a physical store, where they check for defects and check the setup. But it is the best value Fender tele and an amazing instrument.
I have a LP standard 60s, Pro ii strat, and an ultra Tele. The LP I only find myself picking up at home when I'm really bored and trying to record something. For all my gigs, band practice, and just the quick pick up and play guitar at home, it's always the tele over and over again. It's one of the most versatile guitars on the market today. Years ago I went into my local shop with the intention of buying a PRS Custom 24, and I spent about an hour swapping between that and the ultra tele; I'd say craftsmanship and tone go to the PRS, but the ultra tele's neck felt like home in my hands. I bonded so hard with the floor model that I chose it over a fresh one out the box, in my 20 years of playing instruments I have never bonded with a guitar to the extent that I chose a floor model over a fresh one, to me, that spoke volumes

For me the gibson clean it's perfect, especially in jazz, even in archtop guitars like a Gibson L-5 CES

Telecaster is way more impressive for all styles than you would ever think. It really sounds great, so clear when clean or heavier.

I have been using a Les Paul Deluxe since 79 and I must say that I love the sound of the Tele.
Love how Tele's hold their tuning and are super versatile. I love my Les Paul but the Tele pickups are crystal clear

The bridge pickup on a Les Paul sounds the best for rock stuff. The neck pickup on a tele sounds the best for clean sounds. And tracking both of them together sounds perfect.

The tone depends on the amp settings, you can make a fender heavy by increasing the gain , I personally think the neck profile is what you need to look for in a guitar instead of how it sounds cause it needs to be comfortable for you to play , as for how it sounds you can easily adjust that with a good amp

the fender tele has single coil pick ups,no matter how much gain you have it’ll never sound as beefy as a humbucker,that being said,the tele isn’t made for high gain situation,it excels at what single coil pick ups are made for
i believe if you want the best of both world,then get a telecaster and a yamaha revstar 502 or above,tele for cleans,and revstar for distortion

Awesome video! I’ve always felt that Telecasters were so underrated and thought of only as a guitar for Country music. I have 3 beautiful telecasters. It’s the guitar that I feel most comfortable playing. I had a 2016 Les Paul HP standard. Gorgeous guitar! Played incredible but, it just never felt right. I would always go for my telecaster. Funny! How a certain guitar will suit a person. So… I just guess that it’s written in stone somewhere that I only like telecasters and that’s fine with me.
I love both for different reasons, but one thing I love about a Les Paul that you can't do with a Tele is control the volume of each pickup. That really lets you put a lot of dynamics in your playing.
On some Telecasters you CAN control the pickups individually and some Les Pauls you can't.
I think you can notice a characteristic difference in tone between 3:03 and 3:29. I beleive Tele is the winner.
I own both, a 67' Tele and 72' Gold Top.
Your videos are always top shelf!! I'm a gibson lifer, but have recently gotten a Tele. In a full band mix the tele really opens the bottom end up for the bass player. In a two guitar band, one LP and one Tele is pure magic.

I got a Squire Classic Vibe Tele that I run through my Marshall's and it sounds pretty cool even with the stock pick up.
Very effective and intelligent way of presenting both instruments, so that the audience, not the host, decides which one they like better.

4:05 I know most people love the Tele for the bridge pick up, but that middle position on the edge of breakup is just a heavenly sound to me.

They have many more tone similarities than I thought, even despite what you'd expect would be a blatant difference between single coils and humbuckers
This needs to be how every comparison is done. I know for sure now I need both a single coil and humbucker guitar thanks to you playing multiple different styles. A1 video. You should do similar videos comparing other picks up, like active vs passive.
I play a tele and I'm in a band with a les paul guy... and it’s literally the best duo ever, they sound great together

I don't agree. Tele is a distinct sound great for certain things and not so great for others. Les Paul has a much bigger sound and warmer tone, but isn't as good on some of the cleaner sounds where twang is needed. I feel like a strat with a humbucker in the bridge is the most versatile. You get the weight and warmth while still getting the twang when needed. Just my opinion. I'm a Gibson guy first.
@@paulandre3250 Small correction: a Tele neck pickup is not a lipstick. It's a smaller single-coil pickup with a cover on top.
A lipstick pickup is what you find on a Danelectro.
They are constructed very differently.
The ultra tele has noiseless pickups and the S1 switch which wires them in series and makes it fatten up nicely. It’s become my dream guitar, it has the benefits of a humbucker guitar but maintains the look and sound of a standard tele.
There is also the performer telecaster hum which is exactly like you described, you can even split the hb for single coil tone. I am a fan of it but I like the ultra a bit more because it looks like a standard tele.
@@paulandre3250 Well you need 4 Teles. One with a 51 Nocaster in the neck, one with a Twisted Tele neck, one with a P-90 in the neck, and one with a Wide Range Humbucker in the neck.
The clarity and twangy character of the Telecaster played at the same with the les paul have that ACDC vibe. Similar to an SG and a Gretsch. Those guitars sound amazing layered like that. They really compliment each other
Goes to show that Amp tone=90% of the overall tone, especially with crunch or distortion. Clean the difference is more apparent, but both are sending a nearly identical signal into the amp. Feel has always mattered more to me than the different tone you can get from a LP vs a Fender. I love them both.
True if you are setting to get the sound of an amp or certain effect rather then the characteristics of the guitar then that's what you're going to get, each set up should compliment and try to bring the guitars particular tone and characteristics thru, that telecaster with the proper rig would sound totally different but no matter what you play will sound the same if you're rig is set up with a lot of gain and effects to give that hard rock or metal distorted sound.

The LP sound is more consistent and there is a noticeable low-note modulation when the diphthong is played. On Tele we see a more differentiated sound of each string with a clear emphasis on the high frequency harmonics of thin strings. Not all amplifiers like LP and therefore the sound is darker on Orange.
If you need to emphasize the drive and show the filling of a small number of instruments, then LP is preferable, and if you need to lead a rhythm part, then there is no substitute for Tele.
The lp has more bottom by the sounds but the tele sounds more appealing nice playing thank you for this. Videos with no bullshit n just playing rule
I have both and love them both. Musically neither is "better"; they're just different. However in playing feel, the Tele feels like an extension of my hands while I feel I have to fight the LP sometimes. On clean tones, the Tele is sort of clean and pure while the LP is full and rich. It's sort of Bach and Mozart vs Beethoven and Wagner.

Yep ... LPs fitted with P-90s are "relatively" common. Gibson's current model range of LPs includes several of them.

Well I mean you could get a les Paul with humbuckers that also have coil splitting. A humbucker is essentially two single coils so it cuts on of the coils out of the signal to replicate a single coil. No it’s not going to be as good as an actual single coil usually but it does the trick. Also a lot of 70s style teles have humbuckers

That's some nice playing. They both sound great.
They are great separate, but when you put the two together, nothing beats it. The Les Paul fills in the low end the tele is missing, and the tele adds a nice high end sparkle to the sound, making the guitar best mix.
After watching this, I realized that what affects your tone the most is, besides your technique, the amp you use. Both guitars sounded very close to each other, in spite of noticeable differences like wood, pickups, scale length, etc.

They both sound amazing , the Gold Top has more sustain ..... the Tele sounds better clean
while the LP has more power it can sound somewhat mushy at times. while the Telecaster is more defined and probably cuts through a mix

Nope. LP is unworthy(for the price), if you mess up with the neck --- you cannot replace them easily, like a Tele, Strat necks.

We need a series dedicated to showcasing combinations of guitars. I've been diving into how two different guitars can compliment eachother. I've found a lot of success with a tele, and a 335.
I'm a Fender guy, I love my Tele. But those gold top Les Pauls look and sound sweet!

I don't know what you did on tone knob. But clearly les paul brighter as it can and the tele darker as it can get. So They sounded very close. My guitars sounds are like night and day side to side . With both tones all in there's 100% difference here.

I learned on a Start and now I like the shorter Gibson scale of 24.75. I actually converted my start to a 24.75 inch scale.

10 years ago I decided to only have one guitar again like I did in the 70s. It is a Telecaster. It has Texas special pickups with a grease bucket tone knob. It does everything.
My takeaway is that they are both beautifully sounding instruments and one of the best sounds in the video was when they were playing together at the same time… like two lovers whispering sweet nothings to eachother. 😏

Just got my Gibson Les Paul ‘60s Standard in the Bourbon Burst color today October 27, 2020. Absolutely love it
Session musicians usually use telecaster because it’s not as powerful as the Gibson so it won’t outshine the vocalist and it’s easier to mix it to blend in with a lot of background instruments in my experience. There is no better or worse model. Both are wonderful guitars.

It's closer than I expected. That being said, I like the Les Paul better. The Telecaster has it's place though. The Telecaster (not to distorted) cuts through a mix, where's the Les Paul can be a bit muddy.

Awe dude you gotta try a tele. It definitely needs time to grow on you but it does. If it is something else I’d rather play other than a LP it’s a tele. All I got now is a tele with some hot pick ups and it rocks. But to each his own it’s what works later stay safe
I was always a Les Paul guy until I got a Tele Copy to try. Fell in love with it. I’m 50-50 now 👍
I actually started out with a LP style guitar (Tokai) and added a Telecaster to my collection last week. Fender player series telecaster (made in Mexico). Would recommend getting it from a physical store, where they check for defects and check the setup. But it is the best value Fender tele and an amazing instrument.

I have a LP standard 60s, Pro ii strat, and an ultra Tele. The LP I only find myself picking up at home when I'm really bored and trying to record something. For all my gigs, band practice, and just the quick pick up and play guitar at home, it's always the tele over and over again. It's one of the most versatile guitars on the market today. Years ago I went into my local shop with the intention of buying a PRS Custom 24, and I spent about an hour swapping between that and the ultra tele; I'd say craftsmanship and tone go to the PRS, but the ultra tele's neck felt like home in my hands. I bonded so hard with the floor model that I chose it over a fresh one out the box, in my 20 years of playing instruments I have never bonded with a guitar to the extent that I chose a floor model over a fresh one, to me, that spoke volumes
