My first ever WRC round as a spectator (and also for my father) 2002 Deutschland Rallye. St. Wendel Super Special Stage. Theres a final coner a 90 degree right Colin was doing it absolutely drifting. I remember me and our friand and my father go wild and he does it 2 more times same as the first (the superspecial was three laps) and we just humming that is impossible. Maybe a year or two later we watching the television at home the WRC news on Eurosport and it begins with Colin drifting in that corner. I will always remember for that. P.S and becouse of those celebration donuts we int the family calling this Mcraeing :D
It gets me every time I watch it. Its hard to imagine that it was actually the last tight corner between him and a world championship title and he had the bravery and confidence to attack it like that. Just shows the level he was on that weekend. On his day, he was the best that there ever has been.

All this at the final rally of the year in GB. Here in the states, pre-internet, we had to be crafty and patient getting ANY sort of WRC news. Thank you guys for covering this history 25 years on!

When he had spun a 360 donut mid tight hairpin corner in front of the giant crowd gathered and they absolutely went wild for the feat of rally car mastery. What an absolute legend! The good die young. R.I.P. Colin and the McRae family!
I met Colin while I was working for the WRC as a courier. He came up to me and had a chat about my bike as fellow bikers do. I remember it well, we slept in my car overnight at grizedale visitors centre in 6 below freezing temperatures and in some place you could hardly walk on the stage it was that slippery, then colin came flying past us, just incredible, then in Clocanog he was flying and some of the lines he was taking through the bends were incredible. Good memories, that and Richard Burns in 2001.

I was a huge Colin fan. I grew up watching this Grp A era of WRC. Escort, Impreza, Lancer. Had the books, the model cars, the VHS videos. But the circumstances surrounding his death (showing off with an expired licence) and the innocent children he killed in the process (whose parents had no idea their child was even in his helicopter) meant I can NEVER EVER take enjoyment from seeing him anymore. Had to dispose of the memorabilia too! I find this constant deifying of him distasteful. We shouldn't ignore a sportspersons utterly toxic characteristics just because they were good at a sport we love Others may find differently.
Imagine calling Fuji Heavy Industries, AKA Subaru, a "little car company." They've built fighter jets. Has Lancia built anything capable of Mach 2? Has Ford? No?
There are those who valued consistency to win titles. They were quick, yes, but they knew how to throttle back and take 2nd or 3rd place when the pace wasn't there. Then, you have guys like Vatanen and McRae who only knew how to drive balls to the wall, whether they were in the lead or in last place. Some could argue it's their high propensity of risk taking that prevented them from winning more titles.
