- Caroline Aherne's first screen appearance as Mrs Merton, in a non-broadcast pilot programme made in spring 1991 by Yorkshire Television, in a small studio in Sheffield. This has never been screened nor released on DVD.
Mrs Merton's guests are brother and sister disc jockeys Andy and Liz Kershaw, and Viz magazine editor Chris Donald
"I could go on talking to you, for another minute, at least..." man she could be withering at times! But absolutely brilliant. RIP ❤
God rest a legend
Thanks for posting. Never saw this before xx
A Gem of a find.
Amazing
Excellent! Chris Donald mentions this in his autobiography (called "Rude Kids"). The TV studio was actually in the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield, it mentions "Meadowhall" in the credits, but I know the story from Chris's book.
hehe
nerd,
hehe
@@darz_k. What, cos I've read a book? Chris Donald is the bloke who invented Viz comic, Britain's sweariest toilet-grin mag. He quit before issue 100, it's up to about 260 now, but it's still great, if not as funny as it used to be.

Strange comment
Surely the character of Mrs Merton was created by Chris Sievey aka Frank Sidebottom!
Wonderful upload!
Beautiful vignette. Visually this early incarnation of Mrs Merton reminds me of Mary Whitehouse as she was in the 1970s.
"I don't know if people could stomach it." lol
This is brilliant, no wonder the show got picked up.
Nonsense
Brilliant indeed
Brilliant
She was a genius.
Wonderful
lololol She is utterly incredible at impersonating an elderly lady. Every single characteristic, idiosyncrasy, cadence, dig, piss-take. This is the only female comedian that had genius-level talent in my honest opinion.
I think that Victoria Wood was right up there with her.
Kev L not a chance. Victoria Wood was not talented at all in my opinion.
@@arveyilleszender5809 Victoria Wood was a talented writer, stand up comic, singer and actress in my opinion.
Kev L I agree but her whole writing style got very predictable and contrived especially in dinner ladies. It seems she created that entire sitcom and set up entire episodes just to crack silly one liners. She just got annoying after a while.
@@arveyilleszender5809 agreed - CoH was genius level, VW irritating radio 4 bollocks.
Very good
"Like Cilla Black and Bugs Bunny." Priceless.
wow
How did you obtain this if it's never been broadcast ?

Did Caroline model Mrs. Merton on the look Mary Whitehouse?
Thats what I thought as soon as I saw it. I bet she did.
Love the Viz magazine.

So do I!
VIZ rules!!!!!
So... it was originally spelt Murton. I wonder why they changed it?
I typed this in because I'm a terrible speller glad I am now as I wouldn't of found this ig I hadnt
@@cherylreznor181 No, if you check the show Murton is spelt with a 'U' in the pilot show but when it was released it was Merton.
wonder if she got the idea from the film tootse staring dustin hofman
Chris Clarke

Are they supposed to be the image of each other😂
Who was that ridicularse Frenchman?
Some mate of Caroline's who wanted a career as a comedian, probably.
9:03 she reused that line in the royle family
and on the the Mrs Merton BBC Series!
I'm from Rochdale, but please tell me l don't sound like that.
You do sound awful...
Dreadful.
I’m from Rochdale and yes we do.
Disgraceful sexual innuendos spread to the masses
Oh Caroline tryd to be little Bernard manning not once but three times and all it done was boost her ratings funny how tv works r.i.p Mr bm 1Laf
Liz Dawn smoked 5 packs of cigarettes in a half hour interview?
No wonder she's dead
Yes - im just glad ive managed to cut down to 30 a day - Poor Liz must have had no will power
She surely meant 5 cigs, 5 pkts?
@@anthonypoole6417 No I'm sure she meant 5 packets. 100 a day is a lot but certainly I've heard of people smoking 80. I dunno where they get the time, that's like literally smoking one after the other all day.
@@greenaum Obviously an exaggeration, 5 packets in half an hour is impossible. Even 5 cigs would be a lot
This isn't great. You can tell why it didnt become a series. She would later use the "fall on a dog" line in The Royle Family.
It literally did become a series!
hello it did ...
