I am just sitting here thinking about how mad I am that no matter how overpopulated King Crabs get anywhere, the grocery store is not going to lower the price for them.
I fished king crab on the Bering Sea for many years, beginning in 1973. A lot of Norwegians came over to take part in the fishery's heyday. I know many in Norway who would love to do their part in "resolving" the problem. Especially as they were a part of wiping them out nearly to extinction on the Bering Sea back in the early 1980s. It could be done if the Norwegian government was actually serious about it.
Were they nearly wiped out or did they simply migrate to other waters to protect them selfs? Ive thought about this alot we don't know much about the habits of sea life or there intelligence

As it turns out, a decadal oscillation in water temps occurred along with attendant species shifts which made for better conditions for cod and other predators which eat mostly young and juvenile crab when available. The base crab population never recovered in all of this time.

No one in this documentary mentioned how the king crab got into the fjords of Norway. I assume they are not native to the area, or they would not be causing such devastation. I also did not appreciate how SLICE just gave us a slice of this documentary and then left us hanging as to what the scientists discovered when they abruptly ended it. Not to mention, they failed to answer the most basic questions about where the king crab came from, how they got there, that the government restricts the harvesting of king crabs, (I learned that by reading the comments), or what the govt plans to do about the problem, etc.,. All in all, this "slice" of a documentary, sort of sucked.

I just bought the 5 gallon "Tub O' Butter" from Costco. Waiting for my Viking Crab to get on their Viking ship to float down the butter river into Valhalla in my tummy.
My refrigerator has a biodiversity problem too, it's basically stuffed top to bottom with butter, ready to melt. If someone can figure out any sort of way to solve both issues, I'd really love to hear some ideas!

I'm not trying to trivialize this - but seriously if you have an extra king crab problem, it's not rocket-science to fix it. As others have said boiling saltwater and, later some butter and the odd lemon wedge will help.
Don't forget dill - but the real kicker is making your own Thousand Island dressing. These beasts are extreemly yummy. In Switzerland, a grown up king crab easily sell at 200 CHF which is 209 USD at the current mid-rate.

I hear no one talking about how they might increase the biodiversity. It looks like the biodiversity is already low in the region. Probably from loss of keystone species either from humans or other reasons. These crabs are like the wolves re-introduced into Yellowstone park. They are like a apex predator. Keeping the urchin population low will allow dense kelp forests to come back which will in turn provide enormous safe havens and hiding for a wealth of species which the crabs likely won't be able to hunt very well.

Sadly we are not allowed to fish more then a few of them and only a selected few fishermen is allowed to catch them... But some of my friends have free dived and hunted them for cooking ourselves, they can be found at 1m depth and deeper and is easy to catch.

There might be an export market though. :) But seriously, there are places in the world where crab fishing has to be regulated to preserve their numbers. If you were to promote the crab fishery in the Fjords it could take care of the problem and you could use your funding for other studies.
Its a great video. My opinion is that they are looking at only 1 side of the whole story. The question should be, how come there are so many Kingcrabs in the first place. Always get to the root cause of the problem and not trying to solve the symptoms. Good luck.

Eg British colonials paying bounties on rats eventually found massive rat farms made by the natives and had to scrap the program after it ended up making the rat population explode more,

I live Alaska, where commercial fishermen keep the populations well under control, often too under control. Last year the commercial fishery was closed completely numbers were so low. There's also considerable commercial value to these crabs if harvested. Oh, and they are very delicious.
Chinese and Japanese markets keep the supp,y down causing higher cost here in the US. Most of the king crab comes from Russian waters. Now that there's an embargo on Russian seafood, the fish and shellfish are being sent to China for processing, then it's being redistributed throughout the world.

I have several large volume boiling vats and an industrial-size high capacity freezer next to the kitchen in my home. With that said, I will gladly volunteer with helping to reduce this biodiversity problem.

Let crab fishermen drop crab pots (traps) everywhere they can in the area. Red King Crab meat is one of the worlds top seafood delicacies and sells for a fortune. Anywhere else, the fishing of these crabs have to be limited to prevent overfishing and extinction. Just eat them!

From what my grandmother has told me the size of kings has decreased by an amount i almost cant describe.. she was a canner and told me the average king leg was about the thickness of a full grown persons arm.

Around the UK there is a related species of deep sea crab called the giant spider crab, it's just as tasty and there are millions of them but brits won't eat it because they don't like how it looks. What I'm getting at here is that "just eat the damn crabs" might not be such an obvious solution to everyone.

We KNOW they taste extremely good but only a selected few is allowed to catch them and only in limited amounts... Normally you hunt invasive species to extinction but in here in the moronic country called Norway they protect it...

I have several large volume boiling vats and an industrial-size high capacity freezer next to the kitchen in my home. With that said, I will gladly volunteer with helping to reduce this biodiversity problem.
This is why people against hunting and fishing need to understand why ethical means of harvest isn’t just in our human nature but an absolute necessity. It is up to us to keep the ecosystem in check.

Let crab fishermen drop crab pots (traps) everywhere they can in the area. Red King Crab meat is one of the worlds top seafood delicacies and sells for a fortune. Anywhere else, the fishing of these crabs have to be limited to prevent overfishing and extinction. Just eat them!

From what my grandmother has told me the size of kings has decreased by an amount i almost cant describe.. she was a canner and told me the average king leg was about the thickness of a full grown persons arm.

How did these crabs get there ,, I may be wrong but I pretty sure you can only find that species in the North Pacific region and Bering Sea regions, did Someone bring these Crabs to Fjords of Norway thinking it would be good thing.

Do these king crab in habit just salt water or can they live in brackish or fresh ,also do they walk on land ,because i saw a large crab on land .
Interesting fact. Around the UK there is a related species of deep sea crab called the giant spider crab, it's just as tasty and there are millions of them but brits won't eat it because they don't like how it looks. What I'm getting at here is that "just eat the damn crabs" might not be such an obvious solution to everyone.
