Angkor Wat, located in Cambodia, is one of the largest religious temples in the world. Built in the 12th century under the reign of King Suryavarman II, it was initially dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu before becoming a Buddhist temple. Its architecture reflects Mount Meru, the center of the universe in Hindu cosmology, with its five iconic towers.
After the peak of the Khmer Empire, Angkor Wat was gradually abandoned and overtaken by the jungle, though Buddhist monks maintained a presence there. In the 16th century, the temple was still in use, especially after the Khmer kingdom converted to Theravāda Buddhism.
By 1500, the site was already known to foreign explorers, including the Portuguese, who described its grandeur with admiration. Despite the decline of the Khmer Empire, Angkor Wat remained a sacred and well-preserved place. It was rediscovered by Westerners in the 19th century and is now a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag.

Construit au XIIe siècle sous le règne du roi khmer Suryavarman II, il était initialement dédié au dieu hindou Vishnou avant de devenir un temple bouddhiste. Son architecture reflète le mont Meru, centre de l’univers dans la cosmologie hindoue, avec ses cinq tours emblématiques.
Après l’apogée de l’Empire khmer, Angkor Wat fut progressivement abandonné et envahi par la jungle, bien que des moines bouddhistes y aient maintenu une présence. Au XVIe siècle, le temple était encore utilisé, notamment après la conversion du royaume khmer au bouddhisme theravāda.
En 1500, le site était déjà connu des explorateurs étrangers, notamment les Portugais, qui décrivirent sa grandeur avec émerveillement. Malgré le déclin de l’Empire khmer, Angkor Wat resta un lieu sacré et préservé. Il fut redécouvert par les Occidentaux au XIXe siècle et est aujourd’hui un symbole du Cambodge, figurant sur son drapeau national.
