  • This is video is a third test of the seed cleaning machine (recently named, Chaffee Chafferton). We typically would use this machine for smaller seeds like amaranth, basil, or tobacco, so we wanted to test the machines ability to clean larger seed. To do so, this time we ran White Sonoran Wheat through it! Test conducted by NS/S Seed Distribution Coordinator Dick Gase.
This DIY seed cleaning machine was built by garden volunteer, Keith Lierman, using open-source design plans created by The Real Seed Collection (realseeds.co.uk). The machine replicates a traditional zig-zag aspirator which goes for thounsands of dollars. Keith said it cost him around $30 using scrap materials. He said building from all new materials would probably only cost around $50!
Normally we'd winnow seed with a box fan or pull out chaff by hand, this machine makes the process much more efficient. With the ability to adjust the level of suction, the machine can clean seeds as small as amaranth to seeds of squash and sunflower!
Access to the blueprints and building instructions are available on their website, realseeds.co.uk. Thanks to Real Seeds for sharing this brilliant design with the seed saving communtiy around the world. And thanks again Keith for your building skills!

I think it would also help if your chaff door was sealed better. The fact that the chaff was bouncing around so much means that the vacuum was pulling a lot of air in through that door rather than only up through the seed pathway.

Where would I buy old blue? Doesn't have to be yours, but I'm wondering if you can link out where to buy a machine like it?

I don’t know if this is why he’s wearing it, @kennethjohnson4280, but working with grain can be an incredibly dusty process. I grow fungi for a living and clean a lot of grain for spawn production. I wear a mask when cleaning grain so as not to inhale all the dust. It’s possible that’s what’s going on here.
