Here we are in 2023 still rocking to this video! Amy has that smile and Emily is rocking the banjo. I remember those days and now at 63 - oh god. It makes me feel so alive and free. And this song is as important now as it was 15 years ago. !
such a smashing voice ! i wish more women singers on the radio these days had such a nice voice...they all seem exactly the same nowdays, this women is so unique :)
Here's what I say about Amy and Emily. And no I don't see eye to eye with them on some things. But that's life. They are some of the greatest lyricists of all time. And their singing and harmony is like magic. These two were meant to sing together. Love their music and I always have. Especially the earlier stuff.
One of the greatest songs ever, loved it from the first time I heard it. I keep finding myself coming back and watching this video, gives me an indescribable feeling of, well, I can't describe it, hehe. I wish that I was there when this was being played, I would probably have passed out from the sheer awesomeness though.
They said we're checkin' for illegal immigrants, lemme check your car. I said, funny I think we were on the same boat in 1694. LOVE THESE WOMEN!!!!!!! seriously smart, kick ass music
@sandrapick32 The Indigo Girls were at the Georgia state capitol yesterday rallying against Arizona copycat legislation yesterday... and they played this song! They rocked.
every one should know the drummer with them is Jerry Marrotta - used to play in Peter Gabriel's band during the Gabriel Plays Live era - saw Lilith Fair and as we were walking out he was just hanging out with his wife - I was the only one who knew who he was - even he was surprised I recognized him - fantastic drummer
Just heard these two play this song in Sacramento tonight. The crowd went NUTS and I'm sure I wasn't the only one with tears rolling down my face. With the fuckhead in office separating and imprisoning families.... it was cathartic and healing to hear this song

Love the song. Always have. Never agreed with it as the concept of speaking out against attempts to prevent illegal immigration, though. Idealistic, crazy and impractical.
+eddie telleed I agree with you, eddie. I love everything about the Indigo Girls except their constant support of illegal immigration. Surely, they know themselves, there has to be restrictions.

Wow, heavy hitters all around. Jerry Marrotta, and of course, the incompribable Ms. Sara Lee! Emily is beautiful here! Love it.

Indigo Girls
Album: Shaming of the Sun
My friends they wash the windows
And they shine in the sun
They tell me wake up early in the morning sometime
See what a beautiful job we've done
I say let's put on some tunes
Sing a long and dolittle all day
Go down to the riverside take off our shoes
And wash these sins away
And the river said
La la la it said shame on you
And the river said
La la la it said shame on you
I go down to Chicano City park
Cause it makes me feel so fine
And when the weeds go down you can see up close
In the dead of the winter time
But when the summer comes everything's in bloom
And you wouldn't know it's there
And the white folks like to pretend it's not
But their music's in the air
And you can hear 'em singing
La la la they said shame on you
You can feel em dancing
La la la they said shame on you
My friend Tanner she says you know
Me and Jesus we're of the same heart
The only thing that keeps us distant
Is that I keep fuckin' up
I said come on down to Chicano City park
And wash your blues away
The beautiful ladies walk right by
You know i never know what to say
And they'll be singing
Ooo la la la la la la la la shame on you
And they'll be dancing
Ooo la la la they said shame on you
Shame on you
Let's go road block trippin in the middle of the night
Up in Gainesville town
There'll be blue lights flashin down the long dirt road
When they ask me to step out
They say we've been looking for illegal immigrants
Can we check your car?
I say you know it's funny
I think we were on the same boat back in 1694

Love the song. Always have. Never agreed with it as the concept of speaking out against attempts to prevent illegal immigration, though. Idealistic, crazy and impractical.

I'm exactly the same as you guys.

I was at a lilith faire show back in '97. it was a pretty gutsy concept back then. the indigo girls have always been on the cutting edge, though.
