Just got mine. I will have to agree that Magic Square's Grimlock IS the most cartoon accurate in both modes. However, transformation is not fun as always and the design for the hip joints in dino mode or shoulder joints in robot mode are very badly designed. They become loose and pops out so easily. In dino mode, they can make the legs somewhat unstable. I have both Newage and MS and will have to say that Newage wins on transformation and built and material quality. MS wins on cartoon accuracy.
Welcome back, am excited to see this review. Seems like an interesting take on the transformation. But the point about the EX version does stand out to me.
Oh my God! The legs actually have an intuitive, easy transformation. This is not the Magic Square I know and love. 😋 Just kidding. It’s nice to have an MS bot that doesn’t take 20 minutes to transform every now and then. Well done. The only thing that I would change would be to swap the red for blue Dino eyes, but that’s nitpicking. Looks like a stellar release. Looking forward to the rest of the Dinobots.
Oh I was *very* happy to see this show up in my feed. Glad to see you're back, and I hope you're doing alright. Count on Magic Square to overcomplicate their engineering in a way that seems to appeal to me specifically, because thst transformation looks so satisfying. Can't wait to finally get a Grimlock for myself!
@@OptimusLegends Aww, thank you! By the way, I'm a bit concerned about the slider joints on the arms. Would they be sturdy enough so as to support the dino mode in the long term? It doesn't look like they have any locking points except for the rails themselves.
If you can, ask magic square for extra fists with their figures .like jazz and optimus. They look much better then the standard open hands. Thanks for your beautiful reviews. Keep up the good work.
Meh… I’m half on board with your assessment. The legs on the NA version are a kibblely mess in bot mode, but it has more tail articulation. It really comes down to proportions (as always when comparing NA and MS figures). Do you want a more tall/slender appearance for both mode or a more roided out/thick appearance? That’s all just a matter of preference. I’m lucky enough to have both, but I generally skew more NA. That said, if an MS bot is killer, I’ll get it. I’m probably going to skip the MS dinobots, but I have their Bruticus, several Optimus Primes (v1 and v2) and a few others. I skip the ones that look like too much if a headache to transform (looking at you, Megatron). If you get this guy, enjoy him!
@@jasonswitzer1748 I want to see how MS's eventual SWOOP release might compare with NEWAGE Freyr/Toruk, because THOSE are fantastic/ pure perfection. I imagine MS's Swoop will go for more cartoon accuracy like their new Grimlock.
Hes back!!!! One of the main reasons i got back into transformers and magic square figs!!! Curious, how long before we get an alt deco with chrome and additional painted details?
I'm curious do you know if there is a blue eye piece for the Dino head. I noticed it had the red eyes like the Og toy does, but they were blue in the cartoon.
I'm very disappointed by the lack of tail articulation. Usually MS beats Newage when it comes to articulation. Feels like everyone screws up Grimlock in some small ways. The SS86 is missing front teeth, has giant screw holes on his dino face, and attached a boat to Grimlock instead of a tail. Newage made their Grimlock robot mode so skinny and awkward. To be fair, the lack of tail articulation isn't the worst, but this could have been the perfect Grimlock for me.
Hi Scholar! The tail has a small wiggle, for this review, I bought a NA Grimlock, on the way just for a comparison. Will share you more details in part 2!
@@OptimusLegendsthat's awesome! Looking forward to seeing the review. Glad to see you're back. You, Jobby, and Perspective End are my favorite Transformers reviewers. I got into Magic Square and MP 33 because of your reviews.
God dam I just bought the original legends one for a high price. Loved the original solid blue windows. That new deco looks amazing and I can't wait to go broke! Also their new shattered glass optimus is beautiful
This new deco doesn't make sense to me at all. That's coming from a big MS fan and collector. Silver/metallic pants and blue painted windows? What is MS trying to show, toy/toon mix? Why not a premium painted version like the latest Trailblazer or Ironhide in straight toon or straight toy deco?
Looks really nice - but has thrice as many transformation steps as New Age. And all those interlocking panels... For me personally - the look is comparable (minus the paint), and New Age's engineering is so much more enjoyable.
That's a personal preference. I like the MS engineering more than NA's version. The MS figure (bot and dino) are also cleaner. It's all personal preference.

You can swap them, similar to the built-in swap feature with newage's grimlock

I dream of a company applying this engineering to the G1 toy dino sculpts of all the dinobots !
I share the same feeling!

This MS Grimlock beats NEWAGE'S 'Ymir' hands down. The inner lower legs of Ymir in robot mode are a hot mess.

Looks like he comes with the sword and the double barrel blaster, but he has a port in his mouth....So, will he have a blast effect?

Yes, built in
God I hope they Upscale this one day, cause God I need a G1 Accurate Masterpiece scale Grimlock
Will wait for the painted version. Not sure why MS does not paint their figures when released ? MS-KEN ( Ironhide ) looks amazing painted.
It's cheaper, and they're going for a show-accurate look.
i thought so too! But I feel like it'll really be a challenge for some of their tolerances. how do you accommodate for that at such a small scale...
Who is taller MS or NA ?
does anybody know whats that Arcee figure?

What MS Optimus prime is that? 🤔 looks new… and with a metallic sheen on the windows and legs… and seemingly no truck stripes on the arms…
Yeah, it's a new one, get the sample with Grimlock, MS should announce this soon I guess.
