    Pretty identical. But not surprising considering they're most probably made from the same original masks.
    Thanks for the demo.

    At aroung 00:35 I could hear just a slight extra harmonic in voices 1-4, the rest is pretty much identical to me. Very good news.

    Nice demo, and good to get a good sound comparison no diffrence to my ear and if there was i guess its minisculy negligible. What makes or breaks an oscillators sound in my opinion is down to the attached components and a synths filter. Im very close on employing these badboys to my project .

    I installed Rev G chips in my OB-8. 100% identical. It would be nice if they started producing 3320 and 3310 again.

    I'm surprised no one here seemed to notice the attack on the newer chips is slightly delayed. The middle to upper register is quite obvious, especially the pulse wave on single notes.

    Hi,
    One question.. does the auto tune works perfectly with the cem3340 version g replacement ?
    I heard that is not with ob-xa and some modifications on voice card got to be made..
    Have you heard about it ?
    Ob8 is a beautifull instrument, what are the main differences with the ob-xa ?
    Regards,
    Paulo

    Are these the same chips used in the newer DSI Prophet 6 and OB-6? I notice DSI says they use discrete VCOs but i'm not sure discrete means discrete anymore and it may be just marketing. The Black Corportation Kijmii and Deckards Dream are using the 3340 reissue as well as the Neutron. I wonder if the Prophet 08 Rev 2 is using the same DCO chips as the Deepmind.

    • @decimal1815
      @decimal1815 2 года назад +1

      Discrete means that they are not using Integrated Circuits (chips) like the CEM 3340. The new OBX8 synth has discrete (non-IC) VCOs and a choice of either discrete or CEM 3320 filters per voice.

  • @yashnu

    They don't sound the same to me although close: the original ones have a superposed harmonic variation apparent with the chord sequence whereas the new ones don't have this and appear quite 'stable' and perhaps less engaging. Secondly, I also hear a difference in the upper registers - there seems to be an odd thing happening pitch-wise in the highest notes with the new ones.

    • @SHUTUPYAFACE
      @SHUTUPYAFACE  7 лет назад +3

      yashnu that pitch thing is a latch problem in my ob8. The portamento isn't closing all the way.

    • @yashnu
      @yashnu 7 лет назад

      Thanks for the info, Gregory. So, the only difference I can make out is that little variation apparent with chords. I'd like to hear a comparison with the Cool Audio v3340 but can't find any on YT.

      If i remember right that is what Behringer is going to use those chips in their clone if ever comes to light. Which as big of a response as they are getting to the current set of clones that are coming out, I am pretty damn certain they will debut it next year.

      @@SHUTUPYAFACE Could you please give me some info about that? I noticed this thing on a couple of voices on my OB-8 too, altough not as dramatic as happens in yours. I already did a complete restoration of my Oberheim, I entirely recapped the voice and CPU boards, changed all the CMOS switching stuff and op-amps with new fresh components (thanks god all the ICs are socketed) on the voice boards, performed a full calibration and the synth is working fine, I'd just want to iron out this little quirk.

    • @SHUTUPYAFACE
      @SHUTUPYAFACE  5 лет назад

      mima14031985 well, all I can say is the pitch thing is more noticeable with the new cems. I haven’t had a chance to get to the bottom of it, but suspect it could be from replacing certain buffered cmos chips with new ones that are not up to the same rating. The ob8 was my very first repair endeavour when I started out years ago and I also swapped out a bunch of chips... when I do get back to it and try to figure it out I’ll update you. Might be awhile though since I have a stack of other things to fix first.

    Is knob left original vintage VCOs versus knob right reissue VCO?

    Hi Greg, many thanks for the test -- which one is the left side and which one right side of the knob? It sounds very similar, but right side of the knob sounds more rich to me - Not sure which one is which --- title says New vs. Old and description Old vs. New ;) cheers!

    In the patch demo section, starting at 2:00 it sounds to me that the new chips might have better intonation, could be as simple as calibration differences, however..

    • @msxwiki
      @msxwiki 8 лет назад +2

      Intonation depends on the control signal, not the CEM3340 itself.

    • @zmix
      @zmix 8 лет назад +2

      If the new 3340 chip has a different topology or thermal stability factors the intonation can be affected due to drift (or lack of). This is not due to variations in the control signal, and if it were, this would present a problem to any chip equally. My comment is based on the patch at 2:00 sounding much "fatter" (i.e. less in tune) with the original CEM3340.

    • @JoeHensson
      @JoeHensson 8 лет назад

      Totally agree, I noticed that too. The new chip sounds more in tune.

    • @msxwiki
      @msxwiki 7 лет назад

      Still disagree; my Prophet-600 shows a similar behaviour with the new chips, not the old ones! And, it actually has a problem related to the internal controlling (it's been serviced right now).

    • @zmix
      @zmix 7 лет назад
