- Despite a rocky launch, the 2024 Chery Omoda 5 small SUV is off to a strong start in Australia, where it's already winning buyers over with its winning combination of high value and premium design. But its efforts have now been taken to the next level with the release of its new GT flagship.
The Omoda 5 GT's formula is pretty simple, with it swapping out the regular 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine for a 1.6-litre unit that increases maximum power and torque by 29kW/65Nm, to 137kW/275Nm. Better yet, it also swaps out the entry-level and mid-range variants' continuously variable transmission (CVT) for a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Needless to say, the new Hyundai Kona N Line rival promises to be a sportier drive, but is it? In this expert review, CarsGuide Deputy Editor James Cleary finds out by putting the Omoda 5 GT through its paces over the course of a week of testing.

can you upgrade the space saver to full size tyre and lose some boot space?
The Chery Omoda 5 GT front-wheel drive comes with a temporary spare wheel, but the GT all-wheel drive has a full-size spare. So you would need to pay the extra for the GT AWD to get the full-size wheel.
The Chinese have developed their own styling, unique and refreshing .
own styling 💀
We have the 1.6 engine in the Omoda 5 in Europe, but I wish we got the AWD version here.
Even sherry can get sequential indicators right. Shame Toyota can't. On the 300 series looks like they're going at 3fps smh. Corolla cross not much better.
Still shy on power/torque to consider it a rival to the Kona N Line. But it is 10k or so cheaper so 🤷♂️
Great AWD compact SUV, loaded with full specs. NO tinted windows on this top spec model, amazing in 2024..@?
this is a real bargain, even better than in China(they don't have awd version there)
Ide buy the AWD version for sure second hand
Citroën C4 is Better
The Japanese brands need to lift their game asap or they’ll loose considerable market share in no time. I always said I’d never buy a Chinese vehicle out of principle, however I’m slowly changing my mind as Japanese cars aren’t changing quite enough.
Public transport isn't a luxury to keep vulnerable teens safe from an Omoda GT or an old J11 on the road.
Stay away if you want to live longer
it got a 5 star in euro crash test,so why?

Even the brand name is scary. It’s a big nope from me 👎
