The movie didn't work because of a wrong focus. The people behind it simply didn't get Power Rangers. They seemed to really have tried to fix some of the franchises problems (Like the 2 dimensional characters) but in turn they threw allmost everything away what made PR so legendary (Pun not intended) while inserting even worst cliches then those that PR has. It's a fast paced action-series with focus on Martial arts and Giant robots. What does the movie do? Have a glacial pace with an un-needed training-montage and a Twilight-level love story that wasn't needed and just took away from the action instead of adding anything. Same goes for Rita, she doesn't work as a stand-alone villian. She's a plotter who doesn't fight unless there isn't another option. It really would've helped if they gave her Goldar, Finster and/or Scorpina as minions so she could get character moments while also adding in major enemys for the rangers to fight, just like in the TV-show. And yeah... the designs didn't help at all. It tried to be too much to be something else instead of Power rangers. Instead of copyieng Iron-man they should rather have looked at how Captain America costume got translated into live-action. That would have legit been a better solution then these boring cgi armors and they could've shot more action scenes without cgi as well because of it. And the zords are another mess that I don't blame the movie itself for because, as far as I know, the designs were choosen by the producers.
