    Frank, as others have said, this is an excellent learning aid for all us new Synology NAS users! Very much appreciated, especially since it's not just full of "do this, then this, and then that" but also "this is why you should do this and not do that" as well. No "watch me do a magic trick" stuff here, but rather solid examples accompanied by solid reasons for those actions. I know how much extra time/effort it takes to plan and prepare lessons like this, and you've hit a home run IMHO. Thanks so much for your hard work!

    Frank - this video should win an award! Outstanding - you have outdone yourself. Fabulous explanation of the different RAID choices.

    A few notes that I want to include:
    1. I realized after creating the video that I wasn’t clear about the installation of hard drives. If you purchased any upgrades (10GbE, RAM, NVMe), I would install them BEFORE installing the hard drives. You CAN upgrade AFTER setting up the NAS, but take the hard drives out and put them back in the exact order they were in.
    2. The storage pool selection is very important (volume is too, don’t want to downplay it). If you select RAID 6 or SHR-2, you CANNOT go “back” to RAID 5 or SHR. However, if you start with RAID 5 or SHR, you CAN “upgrade” (by adding another drive, assuming you have the space) to RAID 6 or SHR-2. One other side note - for most 2-bay NAS devices, you’ll most likely use RAID 1 if you want redundancy (which is a direct mirror).
    3. Snapshots have to be scheduled for each shared folder.
    4. The autofocus on the camera was messed up at points throughout the video. I'm not exactly sure why, but I'm hoping I can fix it moving forward - sorry about that!
    I am probably forgetting a few things but will update this comment if I think of anything else. Thanks for watching!

    GD bless you, Mr. Frank. I am a mom trying very hard to learn with no experience in these area of technology management; So then, I can teach my little girl, so that she can gain this knowledge. I also volunteer at a few nonprofits; they often need help in this area, but have no financial resources to call in a licensed professional. There's too many times I am not able to help because the knowledge I do have is quiet limited. I share details because the detail and precision that you share the information is absolutely essential to a person for example like myself. I pray the LORD will encourage you to know your impact is far more reaching, extending, to much more perhaps than you may at times realize. ty Mr. Frank, For sharing so generously, what I imagine has come at a cost to you. The LORD bless you and your family.

    What I would like is for someone to setup from start to finish (for beginners) a Synology NAS with each HDD as a separate HDD (separate volume). I have the 1522+ so I have 5 bays. I would like to set it up with no raid but just separate drives. Basically Drives D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5 so if one goes down I can just replace that one and repopulate from my backup set of D1-D5 on my local DAS. That way I don't have to waste a single drive of space on the Synology which would be the case with raid. For me it seems this would be better than SHR my second best option (from my beginner understanding). With separate HDDs (D1-D5) if for example D2 goes out and I had a set of 22 TB drives I would lose the 22 TBs of data on D2 but could just replace D2 with a new HDD and repopulate from my DAS D2. The downside of this would be that during repopulation I would have only one set of D2 until the repopulation is done. With SHR it seems any of the D1-D5 could go and I could replace that bad drive and would have to wait for repopulation to occur (I would expect at least a few days). In the meantime with SHR while repopulating I could just use my DAS. I think I just talked myself into going with SHR.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Месяц назад +1

      You can do that, but you're losing the benefits of redundancy and data scrubbing for one additional drive of storage space. If you have data that's going to be sitting for a while, data scrubbing is far more valuable than that one drive of storage space IMO, but it's up to you!

    • @orangeofmars2835
      @orangeofmars2835 Месяц назад

      @@WunderTechTutorials Thank you. Now I have 3 22 TB drives in it as one volume. I am going to have to add 2-22 TB drives and then set up a completely new SHR raid. All data on the current drives I assume would be lost but I have a whole set of backup on my DAS.

    If I can't find the device on the network, the best solution is to log into the router and see which address was assigned to it. The IP address is also something to be noted at this point because, if you decide to use a static IP address when you configure the NAS, then this is the address to use. I have seen static IP addresses used which, unfortunately did not match what the router assigned and it became just another mystery to solve. I will often set that address as a reservation in the router. Another great video Frank; Synology 101 at its finest.

    Thank you Frank love the way you simply talk though it which is very intuitive! Been looking at Nas drives but been on the fence as not cheap also learning curve seems a bit steep . Also wasn’t sure 2 bay or 4 bay however do know that do not want all photos and videos stored through Google , Microsoft or Apple etc . Really new to this so have no idea what I’m doing so no doubt when I make the purchase will probs end up watching this multiple times 🙈.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  8 месяцев назад

      Thank you very much! If you can splurge (in my opinion and my opinion only), I would go with the 4-bay. It'll give you more flexibility in the future and in the event that you actually will need more than 2-bays, you'll save money because you won't have to upgrade/purchase an expansion unit (if the device you're looking at even supports one). With that said, if you know for a fact you won't need more than two bays, they're great devices as well.

I believe there will be a four drive unit on my premises in the future. Maybe, I could use the DS224+ as a backup for the future 4 drive unit. Your presentations are exemplary. Your way of describing things is so clear and to the point, excellent! If you have a NAS with multiple bays does this mean in theory that the throughput speed would be faster with each additional drive? (when using 10GBe connection and SHR1/RAID5)

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  8 месяцев назад

      Thank you very much! Yes, if you're using SHR or RAID 5, adding additional HDD's will increase the overall speed. Roughly takes around 6 HDD's to saturate (or come close to saturating) a 10GbE connection.

    Just finished my third time thru this video this week. Finally after making errors (especially with trying to set static IP) that required several mode 1 resets, I think I finally have this NAS up and running on one windows computer and one Mac. Can’t believe how many setting configurations I missed or set up wrong the first time thru. Now time to add the other users/computers. This was an outstanding video and absolutely the best I found on RUclips. Only one minor comment. At the e3 minute mark when you are explaining creating folders for data transfer back and forth you somewhat lost me. You really went fast in not only the set up but how you use the folder to transfer data once setup. Anyway thanks for this tutorial, highly recommended for a rookie user like me.

      Thank you very much and glad you got it working! That section is for SMB - ultimately, there are many ways to access the NAS but SMB is probably the most common. If you enable SMB, it'll give you two options for Windows and Mac:
      Windows: \\IP_Address
      Mac: smb:\\IP_Address
      The process for connecting is different for each, but if you look up "Windows Map Network Drive" or "Mac Map Network Drive" in Google, it'll have the info.
      This is actually a tutorial I made on how to map the network drive on Windows if you're interested: www.wundertech.net/how-to-map-a-windows-network-drive-on-a-synology-nas/

    Hi Frank, my Synology and all services on it are configured using your tutorials only. Even this video I'm watching through OpenVPN which "you set up for me", so I could access RUclips from a network offshore (where I work) which is blocking access to it.
    Anyways, I'd like to ask if you could make a video about hosting a WordPress website on a synology. There are very few of those out there, outdated and not very useful for a noob such as me.
    Your written instructions are fantastic and make it all easier and future proof since those can be updated, while other youtubers don't do that.

    I don't think I've ever watched a more comprehensive and clearer video on the topic of setting up a Synology NAS. I just upgraded from a DS214 to a DS923+ and am very happy with my new NAS. I'm looking to add additional security and have followed your recommendations. Upon changing the ports for HTTP and HTTPS protocols, you mentioned the warning regarding the certificate. Do you have a video or steps on how to setup a self-signed cert to eliminate the browser warning? I'm also going to take a look at some more advanced topics that you mentioned but didn't get into. I've never used containers, don't even know what they are, so looking forward to additional videos from you.
    Now that I'm running DSM 7.2, I'm going to setup Synology Drive. I had a folder structure similar to what occurrs when you enable the "homes". Must I enable the homes function in order to use Synology Drive. Wondering if I should do so and copy all my files from my previously used folder structure to the Homes one. I hope I'm explaining myself clearly.

    Re your section about a UPS - Ive Invested in a NAS and understand that a UPS is essential part of the setup due to loss/corruption of the storage pool if the power was to fail when it’s writing to the storage pool.
    If I work on a PC that’s doesn’t have a UPS and am transferring data from the PC to the NAS and the power goes off - is this loss of Ethernet connectivity as risky as the NAS losing power outright if it doesn’t have a UPS?
    I’m trying to work out if a network Ethernet connection (from PC to NAS) being lost is putting the NAS at risk? If the NAS has a UPS and is able to shut down is there any risk of data loss even if the PC blacks out from power loss?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  7 месяцев назад +1

      I wouldn't be worried about the NAS as the NAS would remain powered but just lose the file transfer, but the PC might have issues if there's a power loss. It is a best practice to have a UPS for a PC as well, but the NAS is generally more sensitive due to RAID. Overall, no, I wouldn't be worried, but I just want to point out that power loss for the PC isn't great either and you might run into issues with the file, but on the PC side and not the NAS side.
      With all of this said, it's a hypothetical situation and that's my opinion on what would happen. I can't promise you won't run into issues on either device.

      @@WunderTechTutorials Without the “DSM” checked in the quickconnect permissions I was getting share links that started with “synr-us5.quickconnect.to….” I then started random troubleshooting like logging in and out and got share links that replaced the “sync-us5” with my NAS’ local IP address. Obviously those only worked inside the LAN. After googling the issue I found checking the “DSM” box under quickconnect permissions fixed the links.
      I used to log into the iPhone app using DDNS; however, I found the port numbers were wrong in the share links too. I can’t remember if it had no port number or the wrong port number. I reported it to Synology, they responded to use Quickconnect instead. This was a long time ago so I decided to try logging in using DDNS today and it does create the right share link but only with port 5001. I use a different external port number with DDNS because I don’t like having 5001 exposed on my LAN and I just have my router port forward it to the NAS. However, even though I logged into the app using port 9999 (example) it always creates the share link with 5001 (which won’t work because I have don’t have that port open at the router, only 9999). I’d actually rather use DDNS since it’s faster, but I have to decide if I want to open port 5001 or just use Quickconnect. I don’t share enough albums with people to justify a complicated proxy setup just for this.

Thanks a million

      When you say that it's disconnecting, what exactly is disconnecting? Is that NAS OS accessible locally? Also, how are clients accessing the NAS (QuickConnect, etc)?

      @@WunderTechTutorials yes it’s accessible on the local network, and I can access it remotely through Tailscale. I also have quickconnect enabled, which I believe is how the photos I send to clients either in synology photos, or a link for them to dl from my synology drive. They send me a message saying they are unable to access it. If I’m away at work il access the DSM through Tailscale and restart the nas

      Are you sure you're not using DDNS? Is the link a "gofile" link?

      @@WunderTechTutorials ddns not enabled, just quickconnect and Tailscale. The issue lies with my quickconnect consistently disconnecting randomly and my clients being unable to access their images to download from links I’ve provided to private synology photos albums. It will work for a week and then fail causing me to have to reboot the nas

      I tried to break everything down with timestamps, as I agree, it's drinking out of a firehouse. However, it does go over everything that you need to know if you want to configure the device following best practices (with those best practices being my opinion, of course).

    How come no one and I mean no one online talks about how slow and useless the Synology Drive Client is? With local connection, hardwired computer on a 10gig network and Synology Drive Client is so slow it's basically useless.

      I can only speak for myself but I can truly tell you that I've never had a performance issue with it. Where are you experiencing that? Are you using the 10Gb IP, and if so, is everything using 10Gb (PC, Switch, NAS)?

      I am a new user and went with SSD and upgraded memory and its the fastest I have ever experienced. I just dont think I set up my ds224 plus correctly. Hoping to get some help from this chanel. I did not realize how complicated it would be to set up. I think i screwed up. I configured it through my phone because it couldnt get it working from online until after doing so. It says i have 2 4 T volumes however i am only using one and so not know how to activate or use the other. I already transfered all my mac and phone and 1T of SSD but have another 4T external drive to add and I thought there was an easier way. It has changed all created dates to present rather than the feal created date. Is there someone I can talk to for help?

    I realize this video is for beginners and it looks like a great video but ya lost me in the first few minutes when you mentioned 10 gig NIK or NIC. I don't even know what that is. I'm a photographer who's looking for a way to organize my images that are spread out over a dozen or so external hard drives. I'm guessing I need a NAS? Honestly all this techie stuff is waaaaay out of my league.

      You would understand that part more if you had a Synology NAS. If you need storage, yes, a NAS is a great option. These are my recommendations based on what your requirements: www.wundertech.net/which-synology-nas-should-i-buy/

    What is the maximum storage capacity of hard drives the DS923+ can have in each bay, or the unit as a whole?
