    A faster procedure.
    1. Dump the pile in the chicken pen. Let chicken do the work naturally.
    2. Sift portions that are ready.
    Done.

    we have 4 commercial breeder layer chicken houses having 10,000 hens and 900 roosters, they are in the houses for around 9 month's. last week they caught all 4 flocks. there are wood shavings in the middle of the houses and left and right side are rased slats, under the slats are piles of litter which will be cleaned out soon along with the floor shavings. we are planning to put the shavings and litter on the grass fields to improve growth for hay,
    i want to use the chicken litter in the garden but i know it would be to strong for plants now. can i have the shavings and litter dumped in piles and let it sit there a season before using it in the garden.

    • @GKGPoultry
      @GKGPoultry  2 месяца назад

      I apologize for not answering this sooner. Yes, you can have the shavings/litter dumped in piles, let them sit, and mature. Ideally, you would cover it from the rain, but it is not inherently necessary. You may also want to contact your local county extension agent or NRCS office to check for any regulations you need to follow (if you are in the USA).

    Very to the point thank you! Yo! I was wondering if I could put the chicken manure in a worm composting bed posting dead? Will it hurt the worms I'm thinking no but I'm not sure. Thank you I ahead of time!

      Good question! You have to compost the chicken manure first, raw chicken manure is to hot cor worms.

    Not sure if you responded to comments: we use sand in our coop so we go in each morning with a cat litter scoop then put it on top of the compost pile which is mostly leaves, the chickens scratch at it and about once a week we turn the pile.
    Well now that I need to allow time for the compost to turn before spring I’ve started putting the manure in 5 gal buckets. Since it’s in buckets im not sure how to make it cold fertilizer now. Will it turn on its own? Should I fill it half & half with water? Do I need to leave a head space to allow the bucket to burp? Could I just make it its own compost pile & let it get dry & dusty help please 🤷‍♂️

    • @GKGPoultry
      @GKGPoultry  8 месяцев назад

      Hey, these are my two suggestions.
      You could continue putting the scooped manure in the bucket and mix it with a little carbon material (leaves, sawdust, pine shavings etc.). This will basically act like a small enclosed compost pile. This will also not stink, adding straight manure or adding water to it will make it stink.
      Or you can do what we do and make a second compost pile while the first one is maturing. If it gets too dry, you can always add a small amount of water to it.

    You are missing a trick put all that compost in the chicken run and let the chickens do all the work. thay will love you for it. and will do a beter job that you can do. I have bean making comopst for years but I still carnt maker it as well as my chickens can.

    I have a question. I recently started a poultry raising 1000 chickens on concrete floor covered with woodchip and sawdust litter. I am worried about future litter management and want to find a viable and rewarding solution. My question is what happens if I simply take out the old poultry litter and leave it in a heap in the open air? I am in a tropical country and have enough land - I figure I could dedicate an acre to that purpose over time. Will the heap of old poultry litter fully compost and breakdown over time? Thank you.

    • @GKGPoultry
      @GKGPoultry  4 года назад +2

      Yes it will decompose over time, but leaving it out in the open will leach nutrients once it gets wet. In other words contaminating your ground water. The method you are talking about is called static composting, its a viable option but please cover it somehow, even if it's with a plastic tarp.

    • @TheMidasMD
      @TheMidasMD 4 года назад

      @@GKGPoultry I understand. Will covering it with plastic tarp increase the heat and therefore decomposition time? How much time do you think it needs to fully decompose using the open air static composting method? Thank you for your responses.

    • @GKGPoultry
      @GKGPoultry  4 года назад

      @@TheMidasMD Covering it will not really increase heat. It will take 5-8 weeks to fully decompose depending on the carbon to nitrogen ratio.

      It should be alright so long as it is the manure from their chickens. I say this because manure can spread pathogens

      If your animals are all happy and healthy I say let them eat them because it's free food for them and very healthy. That's what chickens do I have a farm we raise them as pets all are very healthy and happy and I have ducks, turkeys, sheep's, chickens and pigs. They do fine together on our property and nothing ever has gone wrong. That's nature at it's finest let them at those critters.
