Hello there lovely young lady hope you're well. I will have a think off some questions a get back too you. You really are a credit too your granddad. Can tell your very well brought up.
Your grandfather is an absolute legend. His playing on 747 (Strangers In The Night) and pretty much all of Wheels Of Steel is what makes it one of my favorite albums of all time. (Please ask him what gear he used because that tone is one of my all-time favorites as well)
Great interview and thank you. There are no words to describe how much Graham and the band meant to us as kids growing up in the 1980s. He was something to aspire to and in part because of Saxon, I’m a now also professional musician.
Your granddad was a big part of my youth we loved to see Saxon at every opportunity we had including that donnington day i still have my ticket so will you please thank dear Graham for all the joy he brought us and let him know my ears are still ringing . Brilliant interview thanks for doing it 😊😊😊😊😊
I was 15 back in 1979, me and my mates couldn't wait for 10pm on a Friday night to listen to the Tommy Vance rock show, and this is where I heard Saxon for the first time, they blew me away and I have been a die hard Saxon fan ever since, I was saddened when Graham and Steve left the band and I wasn't sure that Saxon would go on but of course history shows what happened, this interview with your grandad was a very slight glimpse into his professional life, I would love it if you could do a second interview and ask him why the band split and ask your granddad more questions about funny stories he can recount, or if he still speaks to Biff etc, and please thank him from me he has made my life much richer by forming Saxon and I still listen to his handywork to this day, I have seen Saxon on many many occasions over the decades but I miss the original lineup, thank you both for putting this out and hopefully we will see you and your grandad soon shedding more light onto his carreer
Saw Saxon 3 times in 80-81 Birmingham Odeon. Leaning on the stage right in front of Graham twice. He got really carried away when doing a solo, won't go into detail but he almost lost his trousers Ha! AC/DC with Bon Scott and Motorhead were up to then the loudest bands I had seen...... Saxon I think were even louder! Great memories. Thanks for the interview Libby
Very nice interview young lady. Saxon was one of my favorite NWOBHM bands back in the early 80's. I could only hope that my grandkids would have the same kind of interest in my life. They are to busy playing XBOX or texting their friends. To be fair, I'm no rock and roll legend, so i get it. Great job.
Hey hey ...I went to see GOA a few months ago .... They were brilliant and so entertaining. Graham's guitar playing was staggering ...His rhythm playing and timing were absolutely solid ...I know about his illness....but my god he is a fighter ....I'm so glad I made the effort to see them ..x
My first gig was Motörhead at Sheffield City Hall in 1979, the Bomber tour, I was 14 years old. Saxon was support, Graham was playing his white SG with the Hendrix decal. That night changed my life forever and I still listen to the early Saxon albums, they played Wheels Of Steel that night and it was unbelievable! Great video, thank you and all the best to Graham he’s a legend! ❤️🤘
all of us commenting here love and respect your granddad and recognize him as one of the pioneers of British heavy metal music but I want to add that what you are doing is wonderful and shows how well you were brought up
Denim & Leather encapsulated the 80s rock/metal scene in one song. Great times I had in the Los Angeles area seeing bands play at backyard parties, clubs, concerts, and jamming guitar with friends. Thank you for doing this interview with your grand dad.
That was fantastic Libby, my first ever concert was Saxon at Sheffield City Hall Strong Arm Of The Law tour 1980, great times. Send my best wishes to your Grandad.
Great video! Graham is a great guitarist and a gentleman, I had the honour to share the stage with him quite a few times on a tour back in 2003. Sending good thoughts to you all! Rock on 🤟😊
Glad I stumbled across this interview! I started listening to Saxon in the early 80s; it was a small crew of us at my middle school that knew of them. Saw Saxon in 1982 at the Santa Monica Civic opening for Accept during the Power & the Glory tour. What a show!
Saw your Grandad last with O/D few years ago, you must be chuffed knowing he's made some of the finest music this country has made, and made millions upon millions of people very happy. This is a lovely interview and you both come over great, much love!
Absolutely loved this, I'm so impressed that you have grown so much. Give my love to all, especially Paul, and your Grandad and Grandma. Love your Grandads reaction to being interviewed by his Granddaughter. Hopefully see you all soon, Quo xx
Libby that was a wonderful interview with your grandad, he's a hero of mine too, seen him with Saxon a few times over the years and even got to meet him in Limerick in Ireland when he played with the Oliver/Dawson Saxon band, a lovely humble man with a fantastic gift, i love every album he played on with Saxon, he always gave a brilliant performance and still does no doubt, and well done to you Libby for conducting an excellent interview, Thanks a million!!!
Thank you for posting this! I have loved Saxon for many years, so this was an interesting watch. I think grandparents tend to be wonderful storytellers, and it sounds like your grandpa was quite enthusiastic when he was talking about his youth and his musical career. He certainly made his mark in metal history!
Amazing! As a life long Saxon fan and a guitar player i have total respect for Graham. Special music and special memories for me growing up. He's a hero.
I seen your Grandfather live in Toronto, Canada in 1988 (at a bar called "Rock n Roll Heaven"). One of my all time favourite shows of all time! He is a Legend to a lot of people around the world! Thanks for a very interesting interview :)
This is such a beautiful video..as a fellow Yorkshireperson I remember being so proud of Saxon when they made it BIG! THANK YOU so much for this interview Libby. Love to you and Grandad 💥❤💥 x
Enjoyed the interview. I remember being at school as a 15 yr old in 1986. It was a great time for music, and lots of other cultural/current affairs etc. Towards the end of that year one of my mates gave me a copy of Saxon's 'Rock the Nations' record. A perfect end to a significant year. Cheers to you and your Grandad.
I hope he knows how much of an inspiration he, and all of Saxon were to me, my brother and our friends. The mark of a true legend isn't really the level of their success, but how years later they are still being talked about to younger generations. He's a Legend.
I'm from Naples, Italy, and Saxon were the first HM band I've seen live in my life when they came to play in my city in 1981! I was 16 and I was amazed by the live show and the music and I managed to find and still have the recording of that gig! In 1987 they came to play again in Naples and I met them and even drove them around in my car! (they might remember it was a white Opel Station Wagon). Just wow, what an interview!!!
Amazing, 1st saw Saxon on the wheels of steel tour. met Graham and the other band members after the show what a lovely guy. I must have seen them more than any other band. Your so blessed that he is your grandfather.
Libby, you did a wonderful job! well done! Saxon fan from San Antonio, TX -- Your grand dad is a legend, thank you Graham for all those riffs on Saxon songs.
Saxon, my favourite band, aged 16. Those first 3 albums - world class. Biff keeps the train a-rolling. Give yr grandad my love. The denim army loved those times and we're mostly still going strong!
That was great Libby thanks. I was at the 1980 Monsters of Rock Festival aged 18 and from memory the PA failed when Saxon came on so Biff had to sing at first without any amplification. Happy days and hello to Grandad Graham !!
First of all I just wanted to say what a delightful young lady you are.I ve only saw Saxon once on the Wheels of Steel tour,at the Liverpool Empire. The gig was amazingI couldn t believe Graham and Paul playing incredibly ,and rotating their guitars the way they did.I was talking to a girl in a record store the next weekend about Saxon, and she had a Graham Oliver autograph on her coat.I m 63 now and still love their music.Graham is an absolute Legend...and Paul obvs.
I saw your Grandad at Stafford Bingley Hall in 1981. Epic gig and I still have Wheels of Steel in my car stereo, on CD. 🎉 Thanks for the music and memories.
Fantastic interview, Saxon albums in the 80's bring back so many good memories ,saw them numerous times and recently too on the Hell,Fire and Damnation tour .I can see your so proud of your Grandad ,long may he continue to ROCK ❤.
got in to Saxon a bit late bought the power and the glory album on cd back in 92 ever since i have almost all the albums. LONG LIVE SAXON. Paul Quinn and Graham Oliver great guys they knew all the tricks in the book
Saxon were the first Heavy Metal band I ever heard. And I've loved them ever since. Your Grandad was the sound of Saxon. That sustain he had on his white SG was brilliant. Glad he is still playing.
I met your grandad in a pub in "Finchley" (London), I went there with my English friend (a metalhead) who knew Graham Oliver was going to play there with a band called "Twin Dragons", so we went to the pub, ordered a couple of pints and sat there, among the rest of "old rockers and metal fans" (there were no more than 15 if I remember) as everybody was stuck to the tv waiting for the football games, anyway, in a way this was great for us because as no more people were coming to the pub, the pub's manager decided to close the doors, so 15 old metalhead, me and my friend in front of the stage, the band played heavy blues, and hard rock till 2 o'clock am next day (Sunday)......... Then when the band finished the gig, we all sat down with your grandad and talked about rock and roll, Saxon, and music in general.................... fucking great!!! your grandad is an extremely easy, cool, and charismatic guy, never I guessed I could ever meet him in person, I used to see his photos in old LP covers back in the day in my own country (Colombia), and then meeting him was a nice and awesome experience .............
What a tribute to your grandad! I was fortunate to see him on the Iron Maiden Tour in 83' and it was a huge influence and I feel so lucky to have experienced that concert! Thanks again!!!
Excellent. Well done, Libby! Your Grandad also inspired ME to play guitar, too, since i first saw Saxon live at Middlesbrough Rock Garden (a tiny music venue then) in 1980, when i was 15. Saw them later that year at the Middlesbrough Town Hall ... and in 1981, for the Wheels of Steel & Strong Arm of The Law tours. Happy days & wonderful memories!
@centaurus5676 good lord ... It's Jon hisself! ... where've you been these past few years? Still playing? ... I've been back in Stockton for nearly two years now (after 16 in Scotland)
I saw your granddad with Saxon a number of times in the 80s, mostly at Leicester and Hammersmith, and even met him on the Crusader tour. Great guy, and he achieved everything despite having a duff finger on his left hand. Truly remarkable. I also play guitar and have a duff finger, and Graham was one of the guitarists that inspired me to keep playing when I probably should have given up. A gentleman and a rock star...but without the ego! 😉
Thanks for doing this interview Libby. Hearing Saxon on the Friday Rock Show made me want to play guitar, had some fun in bands over the years but never very successful! Anyway, met Graham when he came to our rehearsal rooms in Lincoln with a new band (Tempest?) about 15 years ago. What a nice down to earth guy, if you didn't know you'd hardly guess that he's toured round the world! I repaired his Fernandez Strat which had a broken switch.
I saw your grandad with Saxon , in November 1982, when I was nine at Hanley Victoria Hall and they were fantastic! My cousin Dawn went to this show as well, Saxon were her favourite band and she sadly passed away in 1983. The album “The Eagle has landed” is a classic!!!!
My first ever heavy metal single I got was 747,strangers in the night/see the light shining in 1980 and I played it all the time, your interview with your grandfather was very touching, you must be proud of him.
Young lady, can you pass my best wishes, and thank you to him, for the many great memories, he gave me, when I saw him many times, and too you, I wish you a great future, in your life.
you are a sweetie for doing this. he remembers everything right down to the date. you need to do more interviews. i first heard the "power and the glory" album thru my step brother in 83. greetings from california.
you are adorable, {in a nice way!} I have been listening to Saxon since I was 16 years old, in the states, now my son plays metal lead guitar. and loves the old english metal like your grand dad has made forever.
Hi Libby. I'm not sure how this came up on my recommended list but i'm glad i clicked on it. How lovely to see that your Grandad remains the same humble human he was at the start of his career. His long curls, 'tache and tight bleached denim look was the iconic look of 80s Britain's rock scene. It looks like you've inherited his good nature and zest for life. It was actually refreshing to watch real honest people talking instead of mass generated rubbish with an AI voice over.
Saw your Grandad with Saxon at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1981. A brilliant band live and your Grandad was a magic guitar player. If they had stuck together they would have broken the American market. They deserved to be huge!
Just wow. It's amazing you know about your grandfathers music and career. Innocence is no Excuse is one of my favorite Saxon albums and Graham is truly Rock Royalty. Thank you Graham for your many years of bringing the fans your music and thank you Libby for the interview.
Great interview Libby .... I first met your grandad around 1981 I was working on an Oil Rig drilling for coal in Chester, very late one night at the B&B we were staying in there was a knock on the door I answered it and standing there was 5 long haired rockers with no where to stay luckily the B&B had rooms so I booked them in and we've been friends ever since .... The last time I saw your Grandad was at his and your Mum's joint Birthday party in Bawtry..... Great night, great memories ........... Roger
If anyone would like to ask any questions comment below & I’ll create a part 2 Q&A :) Thankyou for all the support!!
Hello there lovely young lady hope you're well. I will have a think off some questions a get back too you. You really are a credit too your granddad. Can tell your very well brought up.
Saxons original lineup ruled !!!!!
Wiked players great stuff man !!!!
Thx for this interview !
Yep. The band that turned me on to the NWOBHM when I saw them open for Rainbow in the summer of 1982.
Your grandfather is an absolute legend. His playing on 747 (Strangers In The Night) and pretty much all of Wheels Of Steel is what makes it one of my favorite albums of all time.
(Please ask him what gear he used because that tone is one of my all-time favorites as well)

Wow...how great granddad❤❤🤘🤘🤘
Absolute LEGEND & he inspired me to become a professional guitarist & support my family through music for the last 30+ years.
Thank you Graham 🎶🎸
Quinn/ Oliver guitar duo were so exciting back in the early 80s and their music has stood the test of time !
Oliver and Quinn were the originals and the best duo Saxon ever had.
Saw Saxon 3 times in 80-81 Birmingham Odeon. Leaning on the stage right in front of Graham twice. Went to see Saxon back in the 80s ….brilliant show 👍
you are adorable, {in a nice way!} I have been listening to Saxon since I was 16 years old, in the states, now my son plays metal lead guitar. and loves the old english metal like your grand dad has made forever.
What a lovely interview..huge fan if graham.
Total Legend, and great questions.
You need to do a part 2 Libby.
Definitely looking at doing a part 2! Stay tuned Thankyou for the support :)🤘🏼
Legend, the beginning of metal. The new wave of British metal.
Roger
