There's much more to being a great guitar player than technique and speed. So for my money Arjen truly is one of the great guitarists, because he has the expressiveness, emotion and creativity that actually makes his playing worth listening to, as opposed to just technically impressive.
+Nick Green Agree with this In fact, I think it is MORE important to focus on melody, sound quality, etc. I would say being fast or mastering techniques are secondary to the ability to create music.
Still coming back to this in 2020. The passion that Arjen puts into his music is what makes it all the more unique. His guitar playing has already been carrying a very signature sound on its own over the years. 🤘🏼
I like how you keep metal alive by playing modern themed space tracks. Really unique. You and Anneke are all I've been listening to for the past 6-7 months, this past month someone turned me on to Star One..and it's been great, I thought I'd never find anything like Ayreon again but I was wrong. Keep it up, Arjen....forever
I was thinking today how much I like the heavy guitar sound, 10 years later. Man I hope we get another Star One with Russell, Floor, Damian, Soeterboek...
You may not be considered the best guitarist in the mainstream opinion, but in the eyes of people that know music and have had the opportunity to listen to any of your albums, they know you are one of the best musicians out there! Keep it up!
Gabriel Cossette Actually, I've heard the best tip for mic placement, from many different audio engineers is to listen to the sound coming through the mics when you're placing them, or to experiment. A couple of centimeters WILL make all the difference. Obviously Arjen did this and found his preferred sound for the music. His use of 6 different inputs/tracks however is something new to me and frankly really cool.
great video. it helps me so much to learn and have a better idea about sound, all arjen's proyect are awesome i listen them every time since 12 years ago, ( sorry for my bad english) greeting from Argentina
@ArjenALucassen I totally understand, man. Keep up the good work! You're one of the VERY few original composers out there. Best of the best for your new work!
Greetings Arjen, I've always admired your work, for many out there, you set the standards (real high). Many guitar players spend so much time thinking on the guitar sound as the holy grail of heavy riff playing, it's very complicated to set the amps by serial, parallel or using the effects loops in and out as you do, it takes so much time (and $ as well) that many of us decide to stick to an amp and try to make the best we can with what we have...
Sounds very good. I just bought the album The Theory of Everything, and again I can say that I'm amazed. Keep going making albums Arjen! A fan from Belgium.
@ArjenALucassen HAHA! You are such a character. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks a lot! I've noticed though that the guitar tones I tend to prefer are from guys who use power tube distortion instead (to me, it's a more organic sound), but I like yours too. The first Star One album blew my mind, and I went crazy when I heard Star One would be releasing a second album! As I live in Singapore, no record stores carry metal CDs so my aunt is bringing me VoAMA from UK next week. Can't wait!
The thing with Arjen Lucassen is that he really deserves to make a living on his music. I bought the first DVD-release with Star One and after having listened to this new album, I must say it is almost even better. Good albums deserve to be bought, Victims of the Modern Age is stunning! By the way, I am also a guitarist and I really like the sound on the new album!
I had never heard of this band until I was surfing youtube for Blake's 7 music vids and came across a live concert video of Intergalactic Space Crusaders - the singers were practically channeling Blake and Avon! I googled for more info on the band, then watched some more youtube videos...I love the sound, I love the lyrics, I love every show/movie the songs are based on, (and the Liberator photo on the website) and just purchased the deluxe edition (2 CD) version of Space Metal (for Spaced Out)
Thank you for uploading this! I'm doing homerecordings with my own songs and try to get an acceptable sound without spending plenty of money (cause I haven't ;) ). I learned a lot of your vids and got new ideas. Thanks for your music and for telling little (or big) tricks how it's made!
@ronaldmoracastillo it's a fact you have given us a nice tip, the bass mic is a new thing for me, I'm recording some stuff and I hope I can do some micing to experiment, as you show. Thanks for the info and for letting all of us -guitar freaks- your secret weapons for this amazing recording!
That is some serious insanity there! I really like the tone of the Sansamp PSA 1.1 through the Marshall's powerstage--is that 59SLP? Absolutely cruuushing.
Also, if theres to be another visit to Hawkwind land, I hope you will do something more in the vein of Huw Lloyd Langtons style of playing. One of the best, if underated guitarists ever, plus, the guy passed on not long ago.
Arjen, for Guitar Rig you can dl the demo on Native Instruments website. It works as plugin but also standalone, so you can decide if it's worth 170 euro. But the best of the best in amp sim is the Fractal Axe Fx Ultra. 2.200 eur, rackable and kills the rest.
Hi Arjen! I've been followin your career for some years (since the electric castle), and I have to say you've become one of my favourite music creators. I also happen to be a singer, and honestly I don't want to die without being part of anything, no matter how small, that you create in the future. Could you please tell me where I can send you some samples of me singing? I'd deeply appretiate it. Thanks and I'll be waiting fo your new CD man! Rock on!
Great video Arjen! One question, how do you transfer this massive sound to a live gig?! cause I believe all the great things you have done in studio would be impractical for a live situation! Can't wait for your new project with Anneke and hopefully for the next Ayreon album! You keep teasing us so much it's not fair!!!
The world lost a shredder but won an incredible songwriter... I like the "why bother"... so said Michael Mc Kean about Malmsteem in the making of RJ Dio "Stars".
Hello, Mr. Arjen. First, give you thanks for that video so interesting and a good job. Second, a couple of questions. I'm been thinking about buying a preAmp and after my long searching I don't know which. I have heard very well of the PSA, but I like also the Rocktron Voodu Valve. Do you test the Rocktron ?. It's suitable for metal tones ? Greetings from Spain.
Thank you so much for this video Arjen! Is it possible to tell us the amount of Gain, Treble, Middle and Bass that we can use on an amp so that we can get as close as possible to your guitar tone?
@ArjenALucassen Sorry, i made myself rather difficult to understand... What i ment was: have you modified the cabinet with a new element, or is that the stock elements? The g12h (you indeed mentioneed this in the video - actually the reason for my question). I can't seem to find a 112 cabinet with these elements from laney :) Thanks for the answer so far by the way - much appreciated.
@ArjenALucassen This is the most beautiful Ibanez I've ever seen. Is it a Custom Shop or a standard model ? And also can you please inform us on the pick-ups ? Thank you.
just discovered arjens music in the last two weeks, think he is one of the best musician around, new album is amazing,
You're Right,
The onely One who disliked this is a Justin bieber Fan!
There's much more to being a great guitar player than technique and speed. So for my money Arjen truly is one of the great guitarists, because he has the expressiveness, emotion and creativity that actually makes his playing worth listening to, as opposed to just technically impressive.
+Nick Green Agree with this
In fact, I think it is MORE important to focus on melody, sound quality, etc. I would say being fast or mastering techniques are secondary to the ability to create music.
Nice to hear that great musicians like Arjen actually acknowledge Yngwie Malmsteen.
From Bodine till now, you have been an inspiration for me all the time! Thanx! 🪨🎯🪨
Still coming back to this in 2020. The passion that Arjen puts into his music is what makes it all the more unique. His guitar playing has already been carrying a very signature sound on its own over the years. 🤘🏼
its one of the best guitar sounds i've ever heard on an album!! you are great!!!
Amen.
I like how you keep metal alive by playing modern themed space tracks. Really unique. Oh man your guitarsound has blown me away! I listen to your music since the final experiment!
I love the chemistry you have with the person who operates the camera :D
this is a classic video i always come back to watch him talk with such enthusiasm and to play in front of the camera
Great video! FLIGHT OF THE MIGRATOR is an increeeeedible album... you are an enormous inspiration!
can´t seem to stop hearing your music.
I was thinking today how much I like the heavy guitar sound, 10 years later. Man I hope we get another Star One with Russell, Floor, Damian, Soeterboek...
Your luck
Arjen just joined to my 'Biggest Inspiration Squad' featuring Jari Määenpää, René Berthiume and Devin Towsend! :D
Márton Kuklis +1 for Jari
Ú! Devin Townsend! Hol a többi ilyen magyar srác? Mondd csak Márton, ismered Kátai Tamás zenéit? :)
I could watch stuff like this for hours! Thanks Arjen.
Love that "Chaos" part at the beginning. Thank you for sharing this material, can't wait to get my hands on the new Star One album :)
Wow, I never realized how much work you put into designing your sounds. And granted, the result IS amazing.
I love your music Arjen! Keep up the great work. Imho one of the best composers/musician of this time!
Love these videos showing behind the scenes and your setups. Love your music as well, Arjen!
you were and will be always one of our band's inspiration
Cool video. Knowing how much thought and work goes into a guitar sound makes it sound even better!
You may not be considered the best guitarist in the mainstream opinion, but in the eyes of people that know music and have had the opportunity to listen to any of your albums, they know you are one of the best musicians out there! Keep it up!
Pure gold this video Arjen, it's difficult to find people that share this kind of knowledge. Thanks!
Very interesting, thanks for the tips with the mics placement! I'm a big fan of your music Arjen, keep on the good work :) From Quebec, Canada
Gabriel Cossette Actually, I've heard the best tip for mic placement, from many different audio engineers is to listen to the sound coming through the mics when you're placing them, or to experiment. is amazing how you explain your set and show us your stuff...!
You're my favorite musician! I can not wait for the new Ayreon!!
Absolutely. Arjen, you are an excellent guitarist, in fact, my absolute favorite guitarist!
Still one of my Top 5 Metal tones of all time. Well done Arjen.
great video. it helps me so much to learn and have a better idea about sound, all arjen's proyect are awesome i listen them every time since 12 years ago,
( sorry for my bad english) greeting from Argentina
truly amazing, people like you are why I keep playing, thanks so much for the insight into your methods. YOU ARE AWESOME !!
@ArjenALucassen I totally understand, man. Keep up the good work! You're one of the VERY few original composers out there. Best of the best for your new work!
Amazing video Arjen! Thanks for sharing! Really looking forward to the new album :) Can't wait!!!
Gaaf dat met die microfoons ga ik binnen kort uitproberen, dankjewel Arjen!

so humble
My one dream is to see Arjen play live!!!!!! One day :D
Keep rocking from South Africa!!!!

Even though I don't play electric guitars myself, seeing (not to mention HEARING) Arjen guide one through truly is inspiring..!
Great musician- composer, guitar player and above all- super nice guy!!!! Can't wait for My signed Star One!!!
Sounds very good. I just bought the album The Theory of Everything, and again I can say that I'm amazed. Keep going making albums Arjen! A fan from Belgium.

Thank you, Arjen! Very, very helpful for us with homestudios.
that actually is a good tutorial, Arjen!
Keep it up - looking forward to the new album.
the solo of Chaos is awesome and the first time I heard it I thought "what is this?? It is so swift! :O"
Hi Arjen...loving the new CD...the guitars sound amazing as always :)
Three guitars plaid by 3 super musicians works out quite fine too as we found out September 2017.
Really interesting clip, Arjen!
Good Guitar playing. Love the new Star One album as well.

While hearing Star One´s Victim of the modern age I think Arjen comes from another galaxy!! What a masterpiece!
My ears... have been pleased.

Sick stuff Arjen!
The third mic ideas is... interesting.

1:22 Notwithstanding, you have been a part of my personal religion for over twenty years. Thank you for everything.
Thanks for sharing, Arjen! :)
Its sound very interesting your projects :D
@ronaldmoracastillo
it's a fact you have given us a nice tip, the bass mic is a new thing for me, I'm recording some stuff and I hope I can do some micing to experiment, as you show.
Thanks for the info and for letting all of us -guitar freaks- your secret weapons for this amazing recording!
As always when I watch a video with this man I go from being 38 to 16 in a couple of seconds. This is pure love for me :-))
That is some serious insanity there! I really like the tone of the Sansamp PSA 1.1 through the Marshall's powerstage--is that 59SLP? Absolutely cruuushing.
Cooking up sounds in the electric kitchen! Goed bezig Arjen!
Also, if theres to be another visit to Hawkwind land, I hope you will do something more in the vein of Huw Lloyd Langtons style of playing. One of the best, if underated guitarists ever, plus, the guy passed on not long ago.
exc....!!!!!! thanks Arjen!!!
ARJEN IS THE GOD WE DESERVE
very interesting, thanks! I don't like symphonic and anything related, but have to say: I dig your tunes, you rule.
Star One rocked my world - Star One/2 rocks harder! way to go, Arjen - from singapore.
@Linqua2112 Arjen (or his PM Lori) usually uploads video's privately, then they switch them to public when they are ready to be viewed :)
Arjen is a wizard, and a genius.
6:20 haha, very good explanation of the dark, bass sound
@ArjenALucassen I just got my first ayreon album! Definately A project and an atrist that is well worth supporting
Hi Arjen! I've been followin your career for some years (since the electric castle), and I have to say you've become one of my favourite music creators. this tone sounded so modern
This man is a genious.
Amazing! :)
Been trying to learn the organ part for this song; any chance of a video of you playing that...?
great!
For simpler judgment: Sansamp 2:47, + Marshall 3:30, + Bogner 4:30
Great video Arjen!
One question, how do you transfer this massive sound to a live gig?! cause I believe all the great things you have done in studio would be impractical for a live situation!
Can't wait for your new project with Anneke and hopefully for the next Ayreon album!
You keep teasing us so much it's not fair!!!
Thank you for your reply!
Your sound is amazing though, I would love to experience it live!
Will you be coming to Greece with gentle storm?!
***** Hehe Arjen, you are our everyones favorite mad scientist of sound :D
That starting riff on "Earth That Was" is one of my favorites of all time. Balls the size of a watermelon. :)
MINE TO...OVERAL SONG IS JUST WOW
The New York City area would be HONORED to have your production team visit us
Great video! I was wondering how how u managed such an badass riff :-D
Diggin the new album up and down... One question - the Laney cabinet, is that the origial speaker in it? THe new ones comes with other elements..
Damn; het blijft goed :) Thanks voor die filmpjes!
Arjen, je bent geniaal!
amazing man, any chance on seeing star one in the UK in the near future?
The world lost a shredder but won an incredible songwriter... I like the "why bother"... so said Michael Mc Kean about Malmsteem in the making of RJ Dio "Stars".
Hello, Mr. Arjen.

Do you test the Rocktron ?. It's suitable for metal tones ?
Greetings from Spain.
Nice!
0:48 here i am, having practiced my legato trying playing it with just my fret hand. Never thinking: wait, maybe it’d be tapped...hahaha!
Brutal!
Thank you so much for this video Arjen!

Cant you do one of those on the modulation effects on your lead sound? That would be awesom. Het is 2,54cm trouwens. ;)
You will be on Avantasia! great!
@ArjenALucassen This is the most beautiful Ibanez I've ever seen. Is it a Custom Shop or a standard model ? And also can you please inform us on the pick-ups ? Thank you.
