I wasn't shocked that Alyssa came back. I was expecting it, I just wasn't sure when. When she retired, that shocked me. I could see that there was pressure on her that season from so many sides, so I could understand her wanting to take an extreme step away from skating. But I could also see that deep down she loved skating, and if she disappeared for a while, long enough for those pressure forces to vanish, she would have breathing room to decide how she felt. And when she returned, it would be on her terms and for her love of skating.

I just have to say that if you label Tatiana M as a “village skater” you should acknowledge that she was an amazing village skater. Without a big fed backing her, coming back after injury and after losing her coach, and adjusting to a new country and a new culture at the end of her long career, she’s an inspiration. And of course she won two big titles and had some awesome jumps…

Dave, with his big stained gapped teeth and eyes that bulge from his head , who was teased for being an extremely effeminate boy, is so disgusting he created Aunt Joyce’s ice cream stand to bully skaters and spread vitriol hate. He is the same person today , using slurs to reference people while receiving therapy for his self esteem.

I wasn't familiar with what Alysa was saying about figure skating on her way out. But at the 2022 Olympics and every other competition I saw her in (even as the troubles were creeping in), she always genuinely looked like she enjoyed being out on the ice on center stage. She had a unique history and upbringing, she probably just needed to get out and vent pressure and expectations out of her system, but I think she has genuine love for figure skating.

Not a bad idea. I think we’ve seen how going to school full time doesn’t go super well with being at the top of the sport. Nathan was the closest & he even knew when it was time to take a break from school. She should just go to Northern California or Canada to train if she’s serious about this comeback.

41:22 -- "Drying out" in Russian has the same meaning as "cutting" in English, as used in bodybuilding etc. I.e. you are "cutting fat" while preserving muscle, and presumably strength. It's a euphemism for losing weight.

Good to see you again. You were both on fire in this video! Looking forward to the dramas and disasters in a not so predictable Worlds. I thought Dave's talk about this being the last winter Olympics for Figure Skating has been crossing my mind as well. With the loss of audience popularity, the drugging and war controversies, the judging politics, shenanigans and other headaches, and fewer known superstars, Figure Skating would be a prime candidate to be dropped from the Olympics, which already has its own problems. Add in bad music choices, dance themes and obscure/debatable judging. Climate change is already effecting many of the winter sports, with less or no snow it what were once prime areas for skiing and other outdoor winter events.

The fact that you were so young when the 6.0 system was in place really distorts your perspective. You post the very best skaters under the old system, of course people get excited. But I watched all those competitions when I was old enough to remember, and most of the skaters weren’t that memorable. Just the very top skaters were. As for Meghan not being successful under the 6.0 system (the implicit misogyny is really strong there, btw, you’re basically saying she wasn’t feminine enough), do you remember Tara Lipinski? Won solely on the basis of jumps, looked and skated like a child. Or Brian Boitano - his strength was purely technical, he was stiff as a board on the ice and Orser always out skated him in terms of being able to move and perform. And the judging system certainly wasn’t fairer. The Eastern Bloc bias was very strong. You could see that with the way someone like Katarina Witt was blatantly held up at the 1988 Olympics. And I also remember when the obsession over the quad started. The overall skating mattered far less than jumps and that also started way before the IJS system. You’re looking at things through rose colored glasses.

The question is if Jason really has any particular ambitions going into Worlds, or if he is just participating for the fun of it? Not that I would blame him, he did qualify fair and square. If anything, it goes to show the bad state of US figure skating in the men's category, the fact that a semi-retired show skater qualifies for the US team at Worlds. There is Ilia and then there is nothing. We really need a few younger skaters stepping up as serious challengers over the next few years.

Now she has matured and had some time to spend figuring out what she wants to do and wants back in the game, for a little while at least. She needs to find a coach who is compatible with her and her goals. She may need to take a year off of school though or go part-time so that she can concentrate on skating.

If Ilia loses gold to Kagiyama in OOGG 2026, it will be in no small part because of the striking contrast of the JPFed sending their prodigy to gain Olympic experience and the USFS sabotaging theirs in favor of a skater with cringe pop tenor programs and another skater without quads in his third Olympic cycle. And whether or not Ilia repeated his *2nd* place at 2022 Nationals is a mute point, because it’s insane to expect that he would be motivated after they benched him like that.
Really hoping he gets there and stays skating for another cycle, too. Maybe Petr Gummenik (other than Shoma Uno) would be the one that would be nice to see win the whole thing.

Training not in the same city as her husband is not the best thing for relationships. She has her world gold and olympic gold And if Russia comes back she might end up on her butt with all her unsold bags. To be clear it is her life and she has a right to do with it as she pleases but it seems Chris has compromised in the past and maybe it is Alexa turn. If Alysa is in So. Cal., she should skate at Great Park w/Raf. A little drive, but she wouldn't have to drive down there daily. Or even at the Toyota Center there's Christa Fassi and Perry Jewel.

A little drive? It would take her almost 2 hours each way during the week from UCLA! The 405 would be involved. 🙄😁 On the weekends the drive down there isn't bad. But most of the top coaches don't teach on the weekend. 🤷‍♀️ Toyota would be her next/closest rink after Pickwick!

Yep, I remember that so well because he was one of my favorites and I was there. His short program that season was brilliant and his long was a cheesy Beatles medley that didn't do anything for him. It was such a huge mistake. Also, he skated right after Jason in the free. If you watch back the U.S. feed, the commentators say "I wouldn't want to have to be the guy that skates next." Welp, that was Ricky. He had a really lame program and couldn't rise to the pressure of following Jason. Too bad, because he was really an excellent skater.
