Aloha from Hawaii! I just discovered your channel and have learned so very much from your videos, thank you! Question: I am a fairly new succulent addict and noticed that you don’t top dress your succulents, which I think one of the beauties of growing succulents along with their beautiful pots, too. Is there a reason you don’t top dress, and plant your succulents in fancy ceramic pots?
Yes, top dressing makes them beautiful as well as nice ceramic pots. But I live where it's very humid outside and constant rains. Top dressing won't let the soil dry fast enough, that can cause the roots to rot. Ceramic pots also do do the same. So if you live somewhere like California, ceramics and top dressing will work. But for humid tropical climates, it doesn't work out quite as well. Not that it can't be done, but I just don't do it so much.
I like doing that too. 😊 Lately I've been feeling bad not blowing the water out of the rosettes coz it's constantly raining daily throughout the day. Some tops already lost the center leaves, and some in between. Thankfully when I catch it early enough, it's replaced with new babies. 💚
Aww... thank you so much for the wonderful comment Diane! I truly appreciate it. I try my best to make videos as clear as possible. I was a beginner once as well, and I explain the way I would have wanted things to be explained to me when I was still learning. I hope you had a wonderful weekend and thanks so much for stopping by and watching! 💚
It must have rained a lot in America this summer. It's so hot in Korea that more succulents in my house die than when it rains. It rained a lot last year, but this year it's too hot. I learned the painful symptoms of succulents in the rainy season from you. I think your information is really good information for me. Thank you so much for sharing a good video.💖💖
Aww... yes we had a very hot summer as well. And now it's non stop rain daily. These succulents in the video are grown outdoors that get rain everyday and somehow still surviving. I need to condition them to get used to it and although some struggle, most are handling all the rain very well. Heat is definitely a harder battle for me as well compared to rain. Is it still hot in Korea or monsoon season now?
Great tips about succulent overwatering 👍👍. My one good looking succulent has shed most of the leaves suddenly. I checked. It's overwatering. Your new sub friend here 🌹🌿
Thank you! Yes, sudden leaf loss is normally due to overwatering. Hopefully your succulent turns out ok and makes it. The fast way to remedy that if it's not too late is to simply pull it out of the soil to let it dry out and stop water intake. 💚
Aww... sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, it is common during the rainy season if succulents are not properly acclimated to receiving a lot of water. Good luck with your succulent babies! 💚
Not necessarily avoid it because bottom watering is good for them if they are in the right soilmix and correct sized pot. The thing is, you need to slowly condition them to receiving more water each time you water them. So let's say when you get a new succulent, the 1st time you water, you only water enough to wet the roots. Then when the soil dries out completely and they need water again based on the condition of their leaves, you water more than the last time. Overtime, you will be watering with more water, but less frequently. Longer time intervals. After about 3 months, they are most likely ready to be bottom watered without the risk of edema.
Yep, jades get them when they are not properly conditioned to a lot of water or left too long without water and then suddenly get a full soak. But it's ok, it will outgrow the bumps eventually. Hope you're having a wonderful weekend sis! 😊 💚
Yes, I've been watching it closely. It's been non stop rains daily so I knew I would eventually have some casualties. It's ok, subsessilis roots fast from cutting and soon it will be nice and healthy again. 😊💚
Chanel says 'that's me' THANK YOU! She's really proud when she reads the comments and people say hello to her. 😊 Thanks for stopping by and watching. 💚
That bumps always happens to my succulents specially Jade. Youre right..under water or over water, either way they get bumps..The rest are great info Christine. We're pretty much doing thesame...🧡💛💚
For the longest time, I thought there were invisible bugs I couldn't see when I didn't know about edema in succulents yet. 😅 But yes, always happens to my jades when I 1st get them as cuttings. Eventually, it outgrows the bumps.
My choco moonstones had edema during the rainy days. Got cracks and bumps on the leaves. I was so concerned about it before but now they are growing new healthy leaves.☺️
Hello Christine! Done watching but I have few questions,,, lol 😂 1) Graptopetalum Murasaki, G. Superbum and Graptoveria Fred Ives are they variegated ? 2) are they located outside ,, in your garden 🪴 3) I want to know what fungicide are you using … So far, we don’t have rain yet here in Southern California ( LA County ) but preparation in the future . Thank you Christine, learning a lot from you ,,, you are AWESOME 💕
Hello Ms. Jonah! I use a fungicide called Daconil by Garden Tech. Red bottle from home depot in liquid form. I simply apply to fungus spots on leaves if it's just a little spot, then when it's time to water, just mix in a little of the fungicide. About 1:5 ratio and do this at sundown. None of the succulents in the video were variegated. And yes, they are all growing outdoors exposed to sun and rain daily. 😊💚
@@TheseSucculentBuddies Oh wow,, those that I asked are Gorgeous Christine Soon they will be tough under sun and rain,, they will adjust well Thank you for all the response and I will get that fungicide Right now, I’m dealing with sunburn succulents, even I covered them , still some are damaged Checking them will saved them like you , your able to save that beautiful succulent from root rotting .
I have a lot that are losing leaves at the bottom from too much rain. But so far, other than the watery mushy leaves, they seem to be holding up. Only way we can truly leave them to grow outdoors in our weather is to train them handle the wet the dry seasons. Let hope they survive this year with less casualties than normal! 🤞😬💚
You and your daughter are adorable ❤️! however, You need earbud warnings on your intro. Lmao! Every. stinking. time. I forget cause I’m excited to see you have posted a new video. 😂
Omg I'm so sorry! 😂 Is it too loud? I'll soften the intro from now on, thanks for the heads up! Whenever I start to film, I think I get a bit excited not realizing how loud my voice is in the beginning. 😅
Yes, all the succulents in the video have been exposed to a lot of moisture because it is the rainy season in my climate. So these are the signs to look out for when succulents are over watered.

You are right, it's important to blow the water right away specially after the rain which I enjoy and relaxes me doing it!!

If edema is a common problem, would you avoid bottom watering then? Would that overwhelm them and cause them to take up too much?
Not necessarily avoid it because bottom watering is good for them if they are in the right soilmix and correct sized pot. Oh yeah, I meant it outgrows it eventually by losing the bumpy leaves. It never loses the bumps when it forms. Same with mine.

They grow quite easily. Treat them more like ghost plants. They just like to be left alone. 😊

Oh mannn. All my succies rn are like these! I think the sellers over water them so they’d look more plump 😓
Yes, absolutely agree! Especially from home depot. 🙄 That's why I always repot ASAP in dry soilmix to try to stop water intake.
