The Real Reason Palpatine Sent Anakin to the Jedi Temple During Order 66

  • In Star Wars revenge of the sith, once anakin cut off the hand of Mace Windu, and palpatine tested him out of the window, dubbing the chosen one as Darth Vader. He sent Anakin to the jedi temple, and then to Mustafar to wipe out the separatist leaders, ending the war.
Why didn’t palpatine just send anakin to Mustafar, while the clones took out the jedi at the temple? Risking Anakin against Jedi Masters all defending themselves at once might have cost Palpatine all he had worked so hard for with Anakin, losing him in a duel. Let’s look at the answer as to why Palpatine sent Anakin to the Jedi Temple first, from the Star Wars revenge of the sith junior novelization.
In the novelization, it writes ““Anakin Skywalker, you are one with the Order of the Sith Lords,” Palpatine replied. “Henceforth, you shall be known as…Darth Vader.” “Thank you, my Master.” Darth Sidious-Chancellor Palpatine-stood alone in his enormous office. He’d sent his new apprentice and a battalion of clone troops to the Jedi Temple. That would take care of the Jedi on Coruscant. He scowled slightly under his hood. He sensed that his apprentice was not yet as fully committed to the dark side as he should be. Well, destroying the Jedi
Wrede, Patricia C. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith: Junior Novelization (pp. 138-139). Disney Book Group. Kindle Edition. ”
It would seem that Sidious didn’t need Anakin at the temple at all. Rather, he just wanted him to prove himself, and thus cementing a theory I had on why Anakin had to kill the younglings. I don’t think he was happy doing it, I think he was just numb to doing whatever he needed to do in order to unlock the powers in the dark side to save padme. He had been fed a lie. Anakin taking Windu’s hand was what made him pledge allegiance to the emperor on the sole reason that the Jedi would never forgive this actual treason and murder he just committed. Palpatine, was welcoming him with open arms. This also tells me that Sidious knew Anakin’s heart wasn’t fully in being a Sith Lord. Much like Maul lived and breathed being a sith, and would rather die than become a Jedi, Anakin like being a Jedi, and he fought his whole career against those of darker deeds, so him becoming the very thing he swore to destroy must have devastated him. The reason he was crying on Mustafar wasn’t because of the deeds he had just done, but because of the man he was today was so far off from the man the little boy on Tatooine wanted to become all those years ago. In the novel the rise and fall of Darth Vader, it explains why he was crying, which I’ll quote here -
After killing all the Separatist leaders, Palpatine’s new apprentice had stepped outside the mountain fortress on Mustafar to gaze at the blazing lava rivers below. He would not mourn for the lives he had taken. But for the loss of his former self, the boy who had dreamed of becoming a Jedi, he was unable to hold back the tears that streamed down his cheeks. Anakin Skywalker was gone. Or was he? After all, Padmé had fallen in love with Anakin, not Darth Vader.
Right here we see how Anakin was callous and indifferent to the lives he just took, the betrayal he committed to the very jedi who took him in and made him who he is, but rather was sad because little ani was so far gone from the Vader that is today. This shows Anakin has the ability to still think of himself as Anakin, even though he’s now technically Vader. This proves that Anakin never fully is killed off within Vader. Only mostly, with a fragment always lingering, especially with the longing of Padme, and trying desperately to bring her back.
This is a scene I really want to see in the Kenobi show, or any show that has order 66 relevancy. A flashback of Anakin inside the Jedi Temple during Order 66, showing his new powers in the dark side and defeating all the masters and jedi just like it was described in the official revenge of the sith novel by Matthew Stover, as well as in the revenge of the sith video game. Anakin’s might in the Jedi temple was only briefly scene during the hologram image that Obi-Wan Kenobi pulled up when he and Yoda returned to the Jedi Temple. Anakin can be seen choking one jedi and battle several other. Dueling jedi master cin drallig who was the jedi temple’s lightsaber teacher. Meaning he was so good at fighting with a lightsaber, he taught the students at the temple. He could switch back and forth between all the different lightsaber forms mid combat without even thinking, and Anakin defeated him, easily. Anakin was strong and once he travelled over to the dark side, he entered a new level of power. Power he was only getting used to, and this is something Sidious wanted him to feel for himself while proving his loyalty to the dark side.
Have a great day! May the force be with you!

He had low Sith EXP and needed to farm a lot of it. Younglings dont offer a ton of EXP but in numbers it sure adds up quickly. The little squirt that he first killed called him "Master Skywalker" so that probably sent him into a feeding frenzy.

I don’t think the clones could have taken out ALL of the Jedi by themselves. I think they would have killed most of them, maybe like 80-90% of them in the temple, but ultimately I think the remaining Jedi would have been able to hold off against the remaining forces of the 501st. Until backup was sent in, of course, at which point the Jedi would have been eliminated. But I think what made the attack on the temple so successful - from a certain point of view - was not only the clones catching the Jedi off guard but Anakin catching the Jedi off guard. Everyone knew who he was so for him to march in with his clones would have been the biggest shock to the Jedi. I don’t think the attack would have succeeded without Vader

Hmm, I feel like if the clones went in to the Jedi temple by themselves without Anakin they could easily call in for support. Perhaps once the clones saw that their numbers were falling, maybe they would call in specialized units or the local units stationed in couresaunt already. The Jedi at the temple were at their absolute weakest with most of the council being stationed off world in different battles leaving a skeleton crew of Jedi who were not the most capable defenders. I assume it was mostly knights, padawans, younglings, and older masters who are too old to be sent into battle. This is not to say that there were no decent Jedi fighters at the time of the attack, but very few remained due to the majority of them being sent into the remaining battles of the clone wars.

In the Matthew Stover novelization the Gate Guard, believe its Master Jurokk, opens the gate because he sees Anakin. Anakin then ignites his lightsaber through his skull (which would have been amazing to see) and then leads them in. While I think the 501st would have sacked the temple anyways, the amount of time it would have taken them to get through the front doors alone probably would have let a lot of the Jedi escape.

Sidious wanted Vader to go so far down the dark path that the jedi would never forgive him. Anakin may have believed that after helping to kill Mace the jedi wouldn't have him back but they certainly wouldn't after the murder of the younglings.

Great video theory. I couldn't have explained it better myself. You are exactly right. When Anakin first bowed to Sidious and was dubbed Vader he wasn't exactly fully committed yet. He as Padme said is a good person. He didn't want to do this. He hated the Sith. He didn't always agree with the Jedi sure but for the most part he was on the side of the Republic. Palpatine sent him to the Temple to not only drive him deeper into the dark side but to change Anakins heart knowing thats what the dark side does. This is why Anakin is crying after he kills the Separatist leaders. He always hated those guys and killing them probably drove him even farther into the dark side. Yet deep down Anakin was still a good person but part of him was starting to like this new power he had. He cried because he was literally struggling with his Anakin persona and his new Vader persona which probably felt pretty good despite all the terrible things he has done.
People don't seem to realize but the dark side actually changes ones personality. Its almost like they get possessed by it. Anakin starts off wanting to save Padme to attacking her when she disagrees with him. Something he would not have normally done and you can even see it on his face when she falls. Yet that moment fades and he immediately blames Obi-wan for it. Another good example is Count Dooku. For years Dookus fall to the dark side never made sense too me. He didn't always agree with the Jedi either but he wasn't necessarily evil. Yet he goes from wanting to get revenge for Qui-gon to serving the guy who got him killed. He even kills his own sister which was the only family he loved at one point (in comics). So it just goes to show you that although you may have your own ambitions with the dark side in mind. The dark side may twist them into something else entirely. Finding yourself doing things you never could have imagined.

It does state in the ROTS Novel that Vader "already had the same measure as his Master [Sidious]." Its when Vader is looking out over the Lava Lakes on Mustafar right after he kills the Separatist leaders and just before Padme lands.
It said "measure". Meaning he was already at the same power level as Sidious. That obviously DOESN'T mean he was at the same skill level as Sidious.

I don't think the attack on the temple would have succeeded without Vader. There were hundreds of jedi at the temple including masters, knights, temple guards and other jedi. Palpatine likely thought that the clones would take out many jedi but many would have escaped in their starfighters to reform elsewhere. Vader was strategic and knew the best points to attack and pin the jedi in. Some how Jo Costa survived thanks to Disney!

You need to make a what if? Of Anakin not being sent to the temple. In this scenario, Anakin would arrive at Mustafar and kill the separatist leaders much sooner than in the actual timeline. That leads to Anakin not going through his duel against Obi Wan, or at least not going through it on Mustafar, where he could be burned alive. It may end up being inconsequential, but I still think it’s a scenario with a lot of potential.

The real reason why he was crying was because he remembered that the Jedi order was being messed up to him and were bullying him during his younger years so he was so disappointed he had to turn to the dark side and kill all of them. And palpatine sent him to the Jedi temple so anakin can help the clones kill even the skillful Jedi because most of them are strong force users, so palpatine knew he had to sent anakin to the Jedi temple.

Anakin's story is so sad. In trying to protect and save Padme I believe that he actually killed her. He delved so far into the darkness for her that she couldn't go with him and I also think that Palpatine might have taken some of her force essence when he was rebuilding Anakin in order to keep him alive. But I think the main reason she died is that her only love was gone because he was trying to save her. There also could have been some birth complications especially with twins.

  • @Darth1Marik

I mean it's pretty obvious why he sent him there, I haven't watched the video yet but in the scene after Windu was killed you can see it all over Anakin's face, he was horrified. He did what he thought was right but that doesn't mean it didn't wound him deeply. While Anakin was already unstable in his commitment to the Jedi Order he wasn't absolutely committed or ready to join the Dark Side entirely. Sidious didn't even have to sense it the way Anakin was behaving in his office. He sent him to the temple to commit a horrible act which would twist and bend him further to the Dark Side.
This would do one of two thing for Sidious in either case he wins. Anakin would fall further into the Dark Side which he did, or if he couldn't go through with it the Clones would have likely killed him on the spot there or assuming Anakin defeats them Sidious would have confronted him and killed him later. In either case he would have gained a new powerful apprentice or disposed of a very dangerous threat.

Anakin would have been better suited having Mace Windu as his primary master instead of Kenobi IMO. Kenobi wanted to be Anakin's Big Brother more than he wanted to be his master and it showed in how he'd let Anakin slide and never called out Skywalkers lack of discipline. Mace would have forged Anakin into a pure weapon of the light whether Skywalker wanted it or not.

Hello there! Can you do a video related to this? Let me describe what I’m thinking. You’re doing a stand up job describing how Anakin/Vader was able to dominate every Jedi at the Temple during Order 66, including Master Cin Drallig and others simultaneously. How then can Vader later lose in a one on one fight against his old master? Was it because deep down he really loved him and he was very hesitant? Because prior to their fight, Anakin/Vader did offer him to join him. Then there’s the aftermath where Obi Wan couldn’t bring himself to killing Vader. What then was the deal as to why Darth Vader pre-suit couldn’t fully embrace the dark side and easily defeat Obi Wan as he did those Jedi at the temple? I’m curious as to your theory on this! Thanks

I think the easiest explanation is that while Anakin is all out offense, Obi is all out defense, and on top of that, obi trained him so I makes sense that he’d know his every move. I mean hell, even obi tells anakin that he was like his brother. They know each other too well. Anakins arrogance is what lead to his loss.

Anakin and Obi-Wan often sparred with each other to maintain their lightsaber skills, each knew every move the other was likely to use at any given moment. Obi-Wan used his knowledge of his friend and brother, to beat said friend and brother.

Haven’t watched the vid yet, but I’d say it was probably to have Vader makes amends with (or to put it bluntly, eliminate) his past; to close the book on Anakin and open it for Vader. By doing this, it tapped into the dark side, likely making him stronger, and for there to be less reminders of his past. Perhaps also as a show of loyalty. “If Vader can’t do this, what good is he to me?”

He had to start fueling Aniken with the Darkside of the force to fully solidify him and his loyalty to Darth Cydia’s Plus Aniken had a massive army of clones soldiers there was really no physical threat to Aniken none the only thing Aniken would’ve gained was more fuel and more power into the Darkside and fall that much more under the influence of Darth Cydia‘s and that’s absolutely 100% the motivation and my humble opinion he was perfectly safe even going up against those Jedi Masters because he already had massive massive incredible power and already proven himself in battle so I did not see that ever being a major threat for him not one bit

Unrelated to this part but do you think Rey will pick up where Luke left off and try to rebuild a new Jedi order? Possibly with some help if there are any remaining Jedi like cal cestus if he still lives, as he wanted to also rebuild it but was scared the empire would find out but now they are all but gone... might be a interesting future story also if the Jedi order was rebuilt I hope it would be different from the previous 1, learning from their mistakes being the most important. Rey the granddaughter of a Sith Lord rebuilding the Jedi order would be very interesting.

I figured it was because he felt that everything that he had been told about what the Jedi stood for turned out to be a lie. As proved when Mace attempted to kill the Chancellor of the Republic without a trial.
The Jedi were evil. And even the Younglings had already been indoctrinated. Killing them he felt, was a mercy compared to living with such a loss.
    It was shock. And anger.
Palpatine could feel that hatred radiating from Anakin, and having already planted such a mind set in him, knew what the boy must be thinking. So he sent Anakin to the Jedi Temple to act out with that, not only before Anakin would have time to come to his senses, but so that such acts would set within Anakin’s mind that he had slipped so far down the Dark path to feel himself to be irredeemable. And as a defensive action, Anakin would rationalize that his actions were justified, because it’s either that or jump into the nearest black hole.

Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader was clearly becoming more and more dark natured the longer that he was around Emperor Palpatine / Darth Sidious. This alliance was slowly killing the young Jedi within Anakin thus turning him into Vader.

Theory (or anyone else who has the answers or opinions on the topic) I have a few questions.
Do you think that if Anakin never became vader but rather left the order, that obi wan would become grand master after Yoda’s death?
    And
Why were obi wan and yoda able to take on the clones in the temple by themselves, while the rest of the jedi just died? Was the difference in skill between them and the rest of the order that big?

    • @leebarr5529
      @leebarr5529 2 года назад

Remember obi wan was thee master of soresu so there’s no way he would defeated by clones and yoda is the grand master of the order so it would be tough for the clones to kill him

    • @richkenyon548
      @richkenyon548 2 года назад

      A: Anakin wasn't there.
B: They infiltrated, killing some as they went. Not clearing the place out.
C: I think everyone has forgotten that most of the council was out being generals and died separately during order 66. There really weren't a lot of powerful masters there at the time. Windu and the previously mentioned battlemaster were probably it.
