In today's video we dive into the AnkerMake M5 3d printer. This is a printer that took many by surprise when it was announced and launched on Kickstarter last year. I was very excited to see what this machine was capable of and today I share what my experience has been like testing it these past 3 months. We will go over its specs, what setup was like, and I will give my final thoughts based on my time with it so far.

Last year I was a bit sad that I haven't had the opportunity to buy the M5 as early bird for under 600$ because I was too slow.

Good video! Printer is priced too high and too lacking in today market as you already said. This one should be a hard NO for anyone in the market for 3d printer. The p1p is $100 off right now and is cheaper and the clear winner between these two printers.

I completely agree. I just bought a P1P after the $100 price decrease and I believe it is the best printer at this price point hands down. It works perfectly out of the box, prints beautifully, and much more. For an i3 style printer like that and for $200 more than a P1P now, it should be a no-go for most people.

The P1P does not come with a full enclosure so there is no advantage here. ;o)
And the design of that AnkerMake is much, much more cleaner than that P1P or Prusa MK3/4 design, especially for a consumer printer that often is used in a living room environment.
Design is something many manufacturers seem to have ignored in the past, which is not a good thing for a consumer device.
The deal breaker for me (also with the Bambu Lab and K1) is that these printer cannot do "normal speed and quiet" anymore. Especially considering many people not having a special room or garage to run a printer in, it's an oversight in engineering I think.
Fast and loud is okay when you need the speed ... but many people print in their free time at home, making dinner at the same time or watching a TV show.

I think it’s worth bringing up Anker’s recent controversy and seemingly disregardaround cybersecurity and data privacy with its home security brand Euphy. Especially with the printer’s cloud connectivity, I think this should be mentioned should a follow up video come out

    • @Geoff_W
      @Geoff_W Год назад

Is that still recent? I don't think it is. That all happened before this printer was even released (but after the Kickstarter ended) and AnkerMake has been above board about it BEING a cloud-connected device BEFORE that controversy happened, during the Kickstarter. On top of that, Eufy did a bad thing, got called out on it, fixed the problem, and so we just...never trust them again? Even with things entirely unrelated? There are companies out there doing stuff RIGHT NOW (Bambu...) And yet everybody wants to bow down to them as gods. This is just punching down.

@@Geoff_W Never said anything about Bambu. Yes they’re both very clear about cloud connectivity both on product pages and in terms of service. In fact, I wish that more people did talk about Bambu’s insistence on using their cloud service and do appreciate Anker at least keeping it much more accessible to simply print with a USB stick. However, I haven’t heard about Eufy/Anker making right since those issues. As far as I’ve heard, Anker simply admitted that their cameras connected to the cloud unencrypted, but have not made any action to make right to the customers that bought those cameras under the marketing that those cameras specifically did not connect to the cloud at all. I could of course be wrong about that and please let me know if they have made things right since then. As for whether it is recent or unrelated, my issue is more on Anker as a whole due to the poor response in my opinion, especially since a few months is almost nothing in terms of proving their commitment. Trust and reputation is not something that should be given with a simple apology, but steadily built off of actions. Anker or not, I think the downsides of cloud connectivity should at least be mentioned, not as a reason to not to buy a printer or use the cloud services, but more to be wary and take cybersecurity seriously (such as not having anything sensitive in camera view).

Joel Telling was kind enough to donate his review M5 unit to the Marlin development lab here at my little apartment in Austin, so pretty soon I'll take a crack at getting their firmware modifications merged into the upstream repository for easier updating to newer versions of Marlin. Marlin 2.1.2 introduced ZV input shaping, and the next version of Marlin will have even more advanced input shaping which was contributed by Ulendo. That should help improve the print quality at higher speeds and perhaps allow for faster printing. It's too bad the machine is so loud. Maybe there's something we can do to mitigate that, but if it doesn't have Trinamic stepper drivers then it's never going to be as quiet as a machine that has them.

For me one big advantage of 3D printing over lets say milling or drilling is that a 3d printer can be used at home. And i3 style printers often were quiet enough so that they could run in the evening while the user was watching a TV show or something.
I get it that some people demand faster prints because they are impatient ... *but it should always be one priority for a good consumer 3D printer to be able to print "slow" but quiet,* especially when it's a i3 style printer. It is good, when a so expensive printer like the M5 can print fast and loud (as well with the bambu lab, voron or creality K1) but it should be an option.
Also after seeing what Creality achieved with their Ender 3 lineup (and the option to extend that via a Klipper pad) and what a Sovol SV06 provides in terms of quality and also speed (SV07) I also don't see the point of printers well above 500 bucks that have no special feature like IDEX, a big print volume or the capability to mount other tool heads (laser).
p.s. And to be honest: after that Kickstarter campaign I still wonder why that printer still is so expensive.

There's still a place in the market for i3's but probably not at that price with that feature set. I3's are a good entry point for people wanting to try 3d printing on a limited budget. They're a good option for people that like to mod and tinker but not necessarily want to build a core xy from scratch (me). They're also a good option if you need a printer tuned for a specific purpose like high-temp, high-flow, abrasive filaments or just something silent that can be ran in an office. The M5 doesn't seem to tick any of those boxes but, if people like their M5's and it meets their needs, it's all good. I'm just happy the race to the bottom of i3 clones seems to be over and we're starting to see some very capable printers being released by Elegoo and others.

    • @hassosigbjoernson5738

Since the newer i3 like the Prusa MK4 can print a bit faster than let's say a Bambu Lab they still are relevant to the market.
Especially since somewhen a printer is having a problem and needs to be maintained which is way easier with an i3.
The selling points also seems to be changing from technical capability, quality or speed to things like design, loudness and easy operation.

At $700, for the speed and simplicity and more solid construction, I’d consider it. Having started out with an Ender 3 and all of the frustrations and learning curve that follows, I am looking to spend more to get a more reliable unit. I want it to just print well, and not have it take 4 days to print a 100% infill piece. My top speed with the Ender 3 was 70 mm/s. Going 5,000 mm/s would be incredible, I’d be ecstatic at 500 mm/s. I’ve been waiting for this review and for it to be available to purchase at retail, and I’m glad to see it and hear your thoughts. Thank you for what you do!

One big factor for speed is software (Klipper) and input shaping.
You can add these to your Ender 3 as well if your machine works well after you had set it up. 150 mm/s should be realistic.
i do also think that a speed of 250 - 300 mm/s should be realistic with the Ankermake M5 or Prusa MK4. The rest often is pure marketing or simply fast travel speeds from one corner of the print volume to another.

My initial thought was "this is a printer for people who want an "It just works" machine but aren't comfortable with Bambu being such a new company." It's not nearly as newbie/institution friendly - you need to know what a zed offset is, it's only really good for PLA/PETG, it has a two-part nozzle which is an easy failure point - but it still seems pretty close to plug-and-play.
Now that the Prusa Mk4 is out, offering pretty much all the same functionality plus Prusa's excellent reputation for aftermarket service, the only niche I can see the M5 filling is "I want a printer that just works, I don't trust Bambu, and I'm not comfortable assembling the Mk4 kit."

My thoughts on this printer? It shouldn't cost more than $300, maybe $350 shipped. A V-roller carriage cartesian is a V-roller carriage cartesian, also I unsubbed Uncle Jesse and LMG channels for advertising this printer and calling it a review/first look. This was a shiny Ender 3 clone from day 1, if the software is still buggy then there's no way it worked on a preproduction model. Those channels just baited a lot of uninformed and 3D printing newcomers into backing what still sells for sub $200, sometimes even less than a hundred if you get lucky (base Ender 3).
It was also shady on Anker's part to send it out to only two youtube "reviewers" before the kickstarter launch, we obviously know now from Stefan and Thomas that Anker has a nasty influencer contract that wasn't okay with their own review policies. From the subreddit, it seems as if Ankermake's QA is hardly better than Creality or Sovol or such, so anything above $300 MSRP is completely unjustified. Prusas are overpriced too, but atleast they have better QA and after sales support, and are generally open when it comes to the design of the printer so you can mod it yourself.

The line was blurred, and Alex(?) who did the video kept banging on about how shitty and unintuitive 3D printers usually are, but this ankermake just works. There was no mention of specs either, just how great it was to use - almost as if it was a telesales pitch, and it sounded like an endorsement. People who don't know much about 3D printing obviously ate it up, when myself and others called them out on not even mentioning the specs - their loyal viewers said that it's only an "unboxing" channel, in-depth review on LTT. Where is the in-depth review? Where is the retraction of the original ad and an apology for misleading their viewers?
Only later when another Anker product had security issues, a camera I think, they said they'll stop accepting Anker sponsorships. UncleJesse was worse because his channel is mostly about 3D printing, so there goes his credibility.
I'm not hating on the printer btw, or mocking anyone who bought it - but they did get duped because for most it's probably their first - and it didn't ship with the software features they promised in a working condition, features that LMG claimed worked and made it better than any other 3D printer (cringe).

I thought about their Kickstarter initially, but then when Naomi Wu (I believe it was her) posted the contract they were sending to people to be part of the initial hype wave that pretty much killed any thought of buying it then. If a company is basically saying they want complete control over the video, you can only say good things, and they reserve the right to modify things however they wish, that's never a good sign.
That noise though... Ooooof, that noise. If it had come out sooner, and made it to people sooner, I could potentially see it being viable, but now we have so many options on the market that AREN'T locked down (or blatantly ripping Klipper, changing a few things, locking it down, and then claiming they made it) that not only advertise speed - they can actually provide such, at a semi-reasonably quality too.
Biggest thing that would get me to not use this printer though (other than the fact I have Vorons and they do what I want and need them to do) is how you're effectively forced into using the app, and features of the printer you paid for are locked out if you don't use their slicer as well. This isn't a good way to go, because what if the company decides to stop supporting the product? Great, now you have something with a bunch of features permanently disabled...

Why would anyone buy this over a Bambu Lab P1P?

Maybe the least competitive printer I have heard of. For similar money i'd get a Prusa mk3s+, or a P1P, or two ender S1, etc etc. As an extra negative bonus, that display attached to the X gantry is the most WTF moment in 3d printers history.

    The price - WTF.
Do Anker seriously think this could compete against a QIDI TECH X-Plus 3.

The choice to place the touch screen on a moving axis is definitely a bad example of UX design. Touch screens are always somewhat laggy and imprecise , so let’s also make your screen wobble up and down!
Overly pricey, no real killer features for that price tag, except maybe robustness, but as people mentioned, a questionable thing with those wheel drives

Not sure i agree here, if it was on the x or y axis maybe but its on the z axis so the movement is 1 super slow when it does move and 2 it moves at most what 0.3mm while printing? really doesnt cause any issues, had my printer since october and its never bothered me. Not to mention if it does ever bother you can always use their app, they just overhauled the app UI and its literally 100 times better now

Great overview. I do want to share something with you as I initially learned how to do color inlays with your z hop method (thanks for the tutorial) . I made a video that shows a way to avoid multiple prints and do it with one file in PrusaSlicer. I did use the M5 for this, but it works with any printer that supports M600. ruclips.net/video/hh-BDZ7oLo8/видео.html

I'll just stick with my 3D printers. The prices are getting too expensive for the common 3D printer hobbyist. Then again I'm pretty cheap. I have about $150 wrapped up into each heavily modded i3 style printers. One was a RepRapGuru i3 heavliy modified and the other is a very heavily modified Anet A6, trust me you would not know it's an Anet A6. Basically each was totally re-worked from the ground up to fix any and all issues.

Exactly as I have just received my M5 with a spare hot end, 10 nozzles, 6 kgs of filament, spare bed sheet, and 5 hot end socks. All for £756 with free delivery. P1P is very noisy and has a cheap control outdated control box.
